One of the best burgers I've had in a long time. Served with a choice of either fries or chunky wedges (think roast potato wedges and you'll get the idea). The cafe makes its own hot sauces and strawberry jams, all of which you should try if you get a chance as they're all scrumptious. You can even buy jars of the sauces to take home. Service is warm & friendly and you're made to feel incredibly welcome the second you walk in the door to the moment you leave. Naturally, we headed toward the table furthest from the open doors and windows through which the lovely English weather was enthusiastically joining us for breakfast. Mistake. It was a table for four. There were only two of us. We were quickly redirected. Apparently we had wandered dangerously close to The Forbidden Table. We retreated, suitably chastened and quietly ashamed that we had ever entertained such extravagance. Settling instead nearer the open doors and windows, I mentioned that I was cold. The proprietress corrected me: "It is not cold." Ah. Splendid. Coldness cancelled. Then came The Silverware Incident. Both of our eyeglasses were covered in raindrops, so I picked up a set of cutlery wrapped in a paper napkin, intending to use the napkin to dry our glasses. From across the room, the proprietor barked: "You could have asked first." I froze. Apparently I had now breached Huxleys Napkin Protocol. There followed that special married-couple moment when no words are required. My husband looked at me through his rain-spattered glasses. I looked at him through mine. He said, "Let's go." And so ended our approximately three-minute breakfast at Huxleys, having consumed neither food nor beverage, but having learned three valuable things: 1. Tables for four are for four. Do not dream above your station. 2. We were not cold. 3. The napkins are not to be trifled with. The food may be absolutely delicious. We shall never know.
