Jae was my tutor for GMAT Reading Comprehension. Right off the bat, Jae gave me a quick run through on what to expect for RC on the GMAT. What I really liked was how he gave me an idea on what I should be looking at for timing, not only on Verbal in general, but for RC specifically. He gave me a further breakdown on how long each type of verbal question should take. Jae also mentioned that when I practice, I should be timing myself to prep better. Since I mentioned I had difficulty with timing, this information really helped me when I went to practice later during the day on my own. Another thing he mentioned about Verbal in general was that I should focus more on eliminating answers with flaws, rather than just looking for the right answer. This helped me right away in fact, as we went through some practice questions together. In regards to reading comprehension specifically, Jae gave me tips on what to look for and what should be going through my head as I am reading the passage. Every sentence I read should be classified as: main point, conclusion, evidence, or background. I mentioned to the GMAT tutor that I find myself often tricked by the "main point" questions, but getting this advice on classifying sentences has helped me grasp the content of what I am reading better. Although I knew the passage map strategy, I never realized I was actually putting way too much time, thought, and missing information in it. I really liked how my tutor asked to see my passage map and asked me questions about what I wrote and why I thought it was important. I liked that he made his own passage map and showed me what he thought was important. Something I really liked, and will most definitely be using, is the +/- for each paragraph which denotes the tone of the paragraph, whether it agrees or disagrees with the main point. Once we compared our passage maps, Jae read through the article with me. I really liked this as he went in depth to explain what each sentence's purpose was, why it was important, how it links to the rest of the article and how what he has in his passage map reflects what the author is presenting. He then asked me to try the first question, and timed me. After I gave my answer, he asked me to explain myself. I liked that he took the time to listen to my response and let me explain my reasoning so that he could get a better understanding of my thought process. This allowed him to get a better understanding of what I was thinking/doing wrong and help me get on a better path on how I think about the questions. Furthermore, he went into detail to explain his train of thought and the test maker's train of thought. Even if I got the answer right, we still went in detail on each question. Jae was very patient. I learned a lot about timing, as this was a major issue for me. Adjusting this small study habit has allowed me to use my time more wisely so that I am not rushed and skimming the passage over several times. The improvement in my passage map also helped me a lot. I continued doing a few reading comprehension questions after the lesson, and I noticed I was scoring better right away. Understanding and eliminating the flaws in the answer choices, rather than looking for the right answer, gave me confidence that I truly understood what I was reading - if that makes sense. I also really like how my GMAT tutor followed up with me later in the day with additional questions to work on. Prior to GMAT prep with TPU, when I self-studied, I wasn't timing myself, and my passage maps were too wordy, long and filled with the wrong information as I didn't understand the concept of looking at each sentence's purpose. With Jae's help and guidance, I was able to quickly see results. read more

I did a GMAT Prep tutoring with Cody. The tutoring went well--He was professional and clear. The material we focused on was sentence correction. This is the most difficult part of the Verbal section for me. We started the tutoring by discussing my prior preparation and performance for GMAT and my goals. We then discussed what my weaknesses are particularly with Sentence Correction and how I get overwhelmed and don't know where to start. We began the actual material by discussing Idioms. After we discussed idioms we sorted out how to best intertwine it into my strategy. My take away at the end of the idioms is that since I am not strong with my foundations of SC yet, that idioms should be applied at the end of the elimination process to help between two final responses. I felt like this was a good take away, because I knew idioms were an important but I didn't know how to intertwine it properly. The next subject matter we worked on was correct vs misplaced modifiers, how to identify them and how the types of corrections that can be used. I think this was good, and the example he used was very well shown because it gave both a subtle error and a larger error. We went on to Parallelism and Comma Splices. This was mostly covered at a high level, how to identify the item and how to approach a correction. We then moved on to Strategies, with the focus point on splits and how to be able to do quick eliminations. I believe the approach to splits is a fundamental skill that I need to master and apply, I had heard of it before in other study modules and message boards, but with Cody was the first time I ever applied the use of Splits. After splits we discussed an error log. Cody greatly encouraged the use of an error log and how if I don't use an error log and I don't review the material I did incorrectly, that essentially I did the problem for no reason, and it was a waste. He continuously urged the use of error logs for Splits. We then went over problems each hitting a different topic matter. I processed the problem independently while Cody timed me, and then he had me explain why I picked the response. This really reinforced the elimination method and and showed me how I wasn't properly applying it. One of the the things I enjoyed most about my session with Cody is that he listened to my process and how I get overwhelmed with so many different variables and I'm not sure what has priority and how so many items can effect the proper response. He just reassured me about the elimination method and to take it bit by bit. We then finished the session with him telling me a little bit about his study process and the resources/tools he used. He also gave me some important feedback and idea on how much time I should be devoting each day/week until my test date. I felt since that Verbal Section is my weakest area and I haven't prepared for it that much, that I didn't have any really good questions to properly utilize my time with Cody to it's full capacity, and that it was mostly an introduction on how to prepare and start for SC, and got to see how an expert approached the process. I did enjoy my time with him and believe I benefited, just that if I would have done more front end work, I would have benefited even more! read more

I had the pleasure of getting GMAT Critical Reasoning tutoring with Josh. We focused on the importance of modifiers ('average' income) and how modifiers can save us a lot of time on CR questions. In particular, Josh showed me how critical it is to identify a modifier in the conclusion of an argument. Similarly, a single word/modifier in an answer choice can render it incorrect. We solved sample problems together, going over questions ranging from medium to high difficulty. Josh trained me to pay attention to details and adopt a lawyer like attitude while solving these problems. He emphasized why it was so important to be a skeptic when doing CR questions. For example, a lot of times, I would lean towards an answer choice as soon as I would read it only to find that I chose the wrong answer in the end. To fix this issue, he showed me why it is necessary to eliminate the four wrong answer choices to arrive at the correct one. Josh also made me aware of how GMAT test creators use clever tricks to hide incorrect answer choices. The following were my major takeaways from our session: 1. GMAT writers make use of our practical biases from real life. Therefore, I need to adopt a skeptic like attitude every time I read these questions to avoid traps. 2. I need to pay attention to details, importantly to modifiers in the conclusion. This is also critical to getting faster on the CR questions. 3. Eliminate four wrong answer choices instead of picking one right one 4. I need to look out for patterns in these questions. Also, because GMAT usually recycles a lot of its logic in CR questions. Recognizing patterns will make me a lot more efficient. In the past, especially with the Verbal section, I have struggled with Critical Reasoning, usually when I'm pressed for time. Under some timed question solving, I ran into similar issues in which I didn't fully follow the CR process and got a few questions wrong. Josh quickly realized that it was a pattern and prescribed that I need to control my emotions and exam anxiety. I found that every time I am under pressure, I tend to rush through these questions without fully comprehending them. Thus, I need to be more objective and a lot calmer in the verbal section. This piece of advice was invaluable especially because I wouldn't have been able to observe this pattern by myself. Lastly, Josh advised me that I need to act as my own personal tutor and learn from my mistakes. I need to be honest and objective about my problem-solving process, identifying my mistakes and deliberately working hard not to repeat them As I am now studying for the exam, I am paying attention to how I am solving the CR questions and whether I am following the same CR process every single time. I have already started to see a few positive results, and I hope to see a lot more as this process becomes second nature to me. Needless to say that my session with Josh was invaluable to me. Test Prep Unlimited was simply phenomenal. From the moment I e-mailed, I was extremely impressed with their quick response times and individualized GMAT tutoring approach. Having already taken the GMAT once and with very limited time before my business school application deadline, I needed a quick turnaround. Unfortunately, every other test prep agency I contacted told me it would take several days before they could assign me a GMAT tutor. GMAT Verbal tutoring with Test Prep Unlimited was very helpful! Josh planned out my program and designed lessons which Kevin delivered. For Sentence Correction, Kevin clearly outlined the principles commonly tested in the section, and gave very useful tips for each one. He was able to reinforce these principles by going through questions, explaining unique test taking strategy to maximize the probability of getting questions right. Specifically, he taught me how the GMAT expects you to approach these types of questions, as well as using the process of elimination to target key differences between answer choices. I liked how Kevin took the time to break down the section into simple, understandable concepts, which I definitely think will give me a better approach to the section. I really think doing questions with Kevin, having to explain my reasoning at every step of the process, was extremely valuable and helpful towards the development of my capabilities on sentence correction questions. Short version: 510 to 720 over 32 lessons, so a 6.5-point gain per lesson, since I know that's what I cared about when I was looking for a GMAT tutor. I was honestly terrible at actually doing my homework for the first half of our lessons, so it probably could have been higher if I'd been better at not procrastinating. Longer version: Doing my GMAT tutoring through TPU was an amazingly personable, customized experience. Josh, Jae, and Michele worked so hard to not only teach me concepts, but also to hold me accountable - I fully admit that I procrastinated like nobody's business and was probably a huge pain in the ass in regards to getting me to study consistently. They were also great with feedback - any suggestions or thoughts I had were incorporated into my curriculum. There is a part of me that would kind of like to do the GMAT again, because I know I could have killed it even more than I did, but given application deadlines and my own procrastination, I'm more than happy with what I got. TPU is expensive (I mean, it's a custom tutoring service, literally built around you - I don't know what you're expecting), but GMAT tutoring is one of those things where you get what you pay for. Standardized services scale well as a business, but they ignore students' individual capabilities. TPU has an amazing sense of putting their clients first, and it shows in everything that they do. Like I said, I went from 510 to 720 over 32 lessons with TPU, so a 6.5-point gain per lesson. Number Properties have been my main Gmat Quant struggle, so Jae tutored me on that. I had a very basic understanding of number properties, but not enough to know how to tackle different types of questions on the GMAT. Jae went into comprehensive depth on where I needed this additional knowledge, divisibility and prime factorization. I like how he quickly identified that my knowledge on these topics was not strong, took the time to explain where I needed to focus, and gave me the time I needed to fully grasp the content. He gave me quick tips and tricks on how to prime factorize integers and use this process to find common factors and multiples. This led me to see integers in a different light. Reading about number properties online is very different from having someone like Jae explain in more detail, provide examples, and answer questions as they come up. I also really liked how he would always ask me to attempt the question first, and ask for my thought process before he provided the most direct approach. This way he saw where I would go off path or spend too much time. After I explained my thought process, Jae would break down why or why not my process works and how I could employ different methods to get the correct answer more efficiently. My main takeaway from working with Jae was to capitalize on using the information given in the question, in addition to my math knowledge. I was often stuck on number property questions, and now, I am able to actually understand the question and get to an answer. Finally, I liked how he would always finish with tips that were specific to me. TPU tutors always told me what I needed to work on during my study sessions and what tools I could use to overcome my weaknesses. read more

Jae Kim is an excellent GMAT tutor. I'm well versed in mathematical skills, however the GMAT prep is a different ballgame when it comes to using them. We started out with basic multiplication, division, prime trees, powers of 2, and Prime Factorization to find the Greatest Common Factors and Least Common Multiples. It surprised me to see I did not meet the time goal despite easily answering correct questions. Since the GMAT isn't going to test large complicated multipliers (since you can't use a calculator for the GMAT), it requires the ability to answer the questions without writing them down. Jae is extremely encouraging and positive which is really important in GMAT tutoring. He explained divisibility rules and broke down the logic behind the foundations of multiplying and dividing 2's and 3's as they are necessary building blocks in future GMAT prep. Additionally, he provided links to the worksheets we used so I could utilize them on my own. I learned new methods of mental math and have the notes from our session that Jae wrote on the board. This is extremely useful as I was able to focus on the problems and what he was saying while training myself to mentally solve the questions and not spend time writing them down. It was quick and easy to get connected with Jae and saved a lot of time considering I didn't have to travel to meet anyone. Test Prep Unlimited is great! I took the gmat in June 2016. I only had 5 weeks to study (~5-6 hours per weekday) and wanted an intensive, effective, and efficient study plan. After looking at a bunch of options, I decided to work with Josh and his team. I did online tutoring with them and overall was very happy with the experience. I worked with 2 tutors - Josh for verbal and Jae for quant. My score rose almost 5 points per hour I spent with them. I really appreciate how they approach teaching the content. There was a heavy emphasis on the fundamentals, which equipped me to solve problems I hadn't encountered prior. After just a few meetings, I realized how unbelievably different their approach is to how the book/gmat answer explanations are. At this point I don't know how anybody learns anything from gmat official guides alone... Those answer explanations are so wrong and unhelpful!! And, working online proved to be REALLY convenient. I worked with Kevin on GMAT Sentence Correction. We started off by going over some of the basic rules about SC, some of the major tips about how to properly navigate these rules and to apply them to the GMAT. Next we covered GMAT SC questions. First I read through the question, and then eliminated which answers I did not like to narrow down to the correct answer. Once I completed this process I talked through my thought process with Kevin of why I did or did not like a particular answer. After that, Kevin gave feedback on my thought process. One thing I did like about this process is that it helped to see and understand how looking for splits work. Once I identified one type of wording I did not like, I eliminated all the answers that shared that same wording. This was a strategy I had not previously employed that I plan to practice in the future. Lastly since I am taking the GMAT in the next few days me and Kevin discussed some last-day strategies so I can get the last good bit of studying in without stressing myself out. Overall, I am very glad that I had Kevin as my GMAT tutor and I would gladly use the service again. At first I really struggled with seeing how to use splits in GMAT SC but working with Kevin really helped me do so. I highly recommend TPU for gmat prep! read more

When I decided to take my business school application serious I realized I needed to REALLY improve my GMAT score, since I tried the the classroom approach with one of the major GMAT prep companies and did not get any good results I decided to go for one on one tutoring. TPU kept coming up in my search again and again so I decided to send Josh an email and I am so glad I did. The packages are expensive (at least for me) but Josh worked with me to accommodate my budget which was a huge help for me and I will say you get what you pay for: Top notch tutors who knows their stuff, really care about your progress and are flexible to accommodate your schedule. Although I did not work directly with him, he paired me with the two most amazing tutors I have ever worked with. The curriculum was tailored to my needs and the materials are thorough. You do have to do a lot of work and put in a lot of study time to go over the materials which to be honest I haven't been able to do given my situation but I can see a drastic improvement in my scores already. I worked with Jae and TPU for Quant. In fact, this was the first time I have gotten tutored for anything in my life as I'm usually an 'I can do it myself' kind of guy. I'm happy to say that working with him really opened up what is possible through tutoring, and how it actually could be more efficient or effective than studying on one's own. I was a big fan of his tutoring style. It was nice to be shown shortcuts or techniques on how to solve problems faster, even if I got the right answer initially. My main takeaways from working with Jae was that every problem shouldn't be approached literally, but instead in the most logical and time-saving way. Previously, I would often try to solve the problem using the safest methods that I knew of without trying any risky shortcuts. After working with Jae, I always looked for a smarter way to approach any quant problems that I encountered, which helped me save a tremendous amount of time and energy on every problem. Jae was my GMAT Data Sufficiency tutor. As we went over questions and strategies, the main thing I got was how my habit of not writing things down mixed me up. I knew number properties was a big weakness of mine, and Jae helped show how important putting my work on the pad is, and that is something I often to not do. He also showed me a few algebra tools I should be using to make my work easier for me. I was nervous at first, but Jae was super nice and made me feel comfortable after only a few minutes. He also was very efficient, and made good use of all of the time available. I learned that when I do practice questions, to make sure to use my note pad more to test values to prove whether the statements are sufficient. Also to go over some of the fundamentals that I am generally weaker in. In my time with Jae I learned to better organize the work I am doing to ensure what I have is sufficient or not, and that I am not doing more work than needed. I had the pleasure of working with Jae on the RC section as I embarked on retaking the GMAT. Jae sent me an in-depth analysis of my performance on the first time I took the GMAT; he laid out the areas I needed to focus the majority of my time on and put together a schedule with with daily assignments. Jae broke down specific strategies to use in Verbal in order to reach my target score. The first strategy was timing. Since the Verbal has multiple subsections appearing in random order, it was important for me to learn how to spend the right amount of time per subsection. He emphasized practicing every Verbal question with a timer to develop a better sense of pacing. He noted that I should not dwell too long on any one question and move on with an educated guess if I was spending longer than the idea time. He also exemplified how to identify flaws in Verbal answer choices to better understand why the correct answer was correct, and more importantly, why the incorrect answers were incorrect. read more

TPU has been extremely beneficial to me in my GMAT preparation. I gave them a timeline until I took the test, and they were able to work around my constraints and scheduling to build an effective curriculum. All of their tutors are extremely flexible and were able to accommodate the limited time in my schedule. Their tutoring was the best I have received in GMAT preparation, and I would say working with Test Prep Unlimited tutors for one hour is equivalent to around 7 or 8 hours of self-study. Josh did a great job analyzing my strengths and weaknesses and scheduling corresponding tutoring sessions. Each of the tutors I worked with are great and I enjoyed working with them. My GMAT score went up 30 points in under 3 weeks of working with TPU. I focused specifically on verbal and went from 71st percentile to 89th. I worked with Josh on Critical Reasoning and found it very helpful. I like how he walks me through questions by giving me space to explain my thought process, but also helps to point out perspectives I may not have thought of on my own. For CR questions, he emphasized how important it was to understand the question stem before tackling the answer choices. This helped me eliminate irrelevant answer choices and have a plan of attack. I learned that I had a problem of moving too quickly through questions by reading answer choices without understanding what to look for. It clicked that if I just took a couple extra seconds to slow down and properly understand the question, I would actually move faster through the test, whiling feeling more confident of my answer choices. I really appreciate how intentional Josh was with filling the gaps in logic. There are a lot of general GMAT tips on the internet, but having someone explain in great detail the things I don't understand is a huge help. read more

I worked with Jae on quant, focusing on the topics of probabilities, permutations and combinations. I'd been struggling to grasp those topics and really wanted some clarity! Jae would clearly explain the concepts first or answer any questions I might have, and he would handpick examples in advance that challenged me to really understand the problems in depth. In the sessions, I could actually see myself solving a question with those solutions in a minute or so. I also like TPU's lesson setup. For the online lessons. The tutors will write out the math on an online whiteboard so that I could easily follow their steps and grasp what is going on. Before working with TPU, I preferred studying alone and trying to understand every single concept myself. Working with TPU and Jae changed my mind because the majority of questions in GMAT require having a deeper understanding of a topic, rather than simply memorizing all the basic formulas, and they helped me gain that understanding! read more

When I started studying for the GMAT with Josh and TPU, I was working a full time job that pushed me to work 60-65 hours a week. I had a limited amount of time I could spend studying, and Josh made sure that every second of my precious time was spent wisely. He tailored a curriculum that fit my needs based on real data.
