Two years ago, my husband and I walked in to commemorate our 29th anniversary with American traditional tattoos. Kyle greeted us with a positive attitude, and we walked out with super clean, crisp sharp-looking daggers. Kyle's tattoos were so amazing, we now have 3 each and can't wait to book the next one

I booked an appointment with Kyle for myself and my two sisters to get a memorial tattoo for my mother. Kyle was amazing, one sister was a first timer and he was very patient with her and did exactly what we asked for. I will definitely be back!

Stopped into this shop for the first time to get a Valentine's Day flash tattoo. We loved the vibes in this place, not overwhelming or pushy or judgy like some shops can be. I came in originally to see if my septum had closed, and JC was very informative and helpful during that visit. Unfortunately, it had closed, so I came back after traveling to get it re-pierced. When it came time for the actual piercing, I honestly panicked. I really wish there had been a clear warning before he started. It felt like he went in without saying anything, and that was a big deal for me because I was not mentally prepared at all. Most piercers usually give a heads up so you can brace yourself, and since that did not happen, the whole moment felt a lot more intense than it needed to be. The piercing itself turned out fine, but the lack of communication made it a rough experience. read more

Came in with my girlfriend for simple line-work tattoos. The artist was nice at first, but his whole attitude changed when I asked if the $120 quote was for both or each. I wasn't trying to haggle and was fine paying $120 each, but he suddenly got defensive and rude. My tattoo went fine, but when it was my girlfriend's turn, he rushed the stencil placement, got annoyed that it was crooked, and talked down to her even though she was doing exactly what he'd asked. After finishing, he put Tegaderm on that immediately started lifting. When I gently tried to help her pat it down, he snapped at me about "cross contamination" -- over touching the outside of the bandage. Meanwhile, he'd touched the inside with his bare hands. The tattoos turned out fine, but the way he treated us was completely uncalled for. You can be a good artist and still have basic respect for your clients. read more

VETERANS DO NOT BOOK THIS SHOP. Owner Joseph James swindled me. 1st consultation he made me wait 3 + hours, rescheduled me for a week later. Then the day of (new consultation) attempted to switch artists on me last minute. I even bought a $60 hoodie to show I was amicable. He would not give me my deposit back ($65). Kyle, the artist that did mine made me feel a lot less nervous when it came to using the needle. Established in 1976.

Gold Coast Tattoo opened it's first doors in Monterey in 1976. It was originally established by Jack and Eileen Massey. In 1979, Steve Hendricks bought the business, and has owned it ever since. We have had two shops in Salinas, two shops in Marina, and now we have a 2500 square foot location back in Monterey. Steve has also owned shops in Hawaii and the Philippines.

Meet the Business Owner: Steve and Casey H.

Gold Coast Tattoo was established in Monterey California in 1976 by Jack and Eileen Massey. After it opened, I naturally found my way there. This was where I spent my spare time when I wasn't working at the local newspaper as a printer. Soon after, Jack offered me an apprenticeship. I was able to take a 90 day leave from my job at The Herald, so I jumped right in. At the end of the 90 days I had two choices, either give up my good paying job with all the benefits, including a lifetime guaranteed position, or roll the dice and see what happened. That was in 1977 and I've never looked back. In 1979 Jack and Eileen decided to open a shop in San Francisco and offered me Gold Coast at a more than reasonable price. I have owned Gold Coast since then, and my daughter Casey currently manages/operates the business, while I am working out in Fort Ord handling Unexploded Ordnance for the Department of Defense.

Brian communicated well with me and i was able to get an appointment. He was very nice and understanding when i mentioned that i was a bit nervous. He told me when to breathe in and breathe out, and i am sure this was the reason why the piercing did not hurt. I give the pain a five out of 10 and it hurt less than my second lobe piercing. But Sometimes You Don't I don't usually post reviews, but after my recent tattoo experience, I wanted to share a few lessons I learned. Looking back, there were several warning signs I should have paid more attention to: unclear pricing, questions about deposits, limited availability for follow-up consultations, and concerns about the healing process and final appearance of the tattoo. My biggest takeaway is simple: trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right, ask questions, slow the process down, or walk away. A lost deposit is far less costly than being unhappy with a permanent tattoo. There are many talented artists in our community. Take the time to research their work, meet with them, discuss your expectations, and make sure you're comfortable before committing. Don't settle for the first available appointment or the easiest option. Find an artist whose work, communication, and professionalism give you complete confidence. Personally, I have chosen to have my tattoo reworked by another artist who came highly recommended. The difference in consultation, communication, and overall experience has confirmed that finding the right artist is worth the extra time and effort. A tattoo is forever. Choose the artist you would trust without hesitation, and don't move forward until you're certain you've found the right fit.

Ever!…read more My husband and I had an appointment and it had to be rescheduled due to an emergency with the massage therapist which was no worry and they were great about rescheduling when we were available. When we got there they'd given us an upgrade due to the "inconvenience" which I'd say it wasn't at all especially since everyone was so nice about it! The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and walked us through the whole process and even brought us water afterward. We'll definitely be returning next time we're in town!

I would like to say first of all, that every tattoo shop has its own style and its own approach to providing tattoos to its customers. There is no reason that Gold Coast should get blamed for a persons bad experience. Tattooing and Piercing are very serious things, and it is the employees judgment that is helping stop people from getting tattoos and piercings that in the future they may regret... All the tattoo artists at Gold Coast are some of the most talented in the county. Orlando has been tattooing me for quite a while now and i wouldnt dare have anyone else touch me with a needle, his creativity, detail to his work and his awesome personality make him a great person to have do your tattoo. The other artists at Gold coast share some of the similar qualities, and isnt it basically a given that if a tattoo artist is actually employed with Gold Coast that they have proven themselves to be the highest quality? Gold Coast always uses clean needles, allows you to design your own tattoo, and gives you a great sense of companionship in a tattoo shop. They want to know that your tattoo healed properly, they want you to come back or to refer your friends. I wouldnt send anyone to any other tattoo shop other than Gold Coast. I have been next to Orlando through his time at Creative visions and at Gold Coast. Gold Coast has been the winner. They offer the usual off the wall tats, but what other shop have you ever been to that doesnt? and yes, considering that over 60% of the Monterey counties revenue comes from the Military bases nearby it is only obvious that Gold Coast would have a high flow of Military members, why is that so wrong? In my opinion Gold Coast is and has been the best quality tattoo shop in the Monterey/Salinas area for a long time and will continue to prosper. read more

I must say, pretty darn kick-a$$ Customer Service at Gold Coast! ..and I'm in the Hospitality industry, so I'm pretty picky although I wasn't expecting that. I mean c'mon I'm walking into a TATTOO Shop. . .not the Intercontinental, right? Well, I walked in weeks ago and a girl at the counter was there with a really down-to-earth friendliness that calmed my nerves ( yes, I was a lil' nervous ). She grabbed some portfolios for me to view while I waited for 'Q' ...if it weren't for my indecisiveness that day, I would have chosen him because of his impressive work! He was awesome all around - but I was just simply not ready to be inked yet... .. .. . .Another week goes by and I'm ready to make the bold move into something more permanent than botox or an augmentation. Yup, ready to be inked. I'm a longboarder, diver, swimmer and have an incredible l-o-v-e for the Ocean......sooooo I decide on an Ocean-themed tattoo (something I've thought about for WAY too long). Shawn Franco drew out this perfect and beautiful octopus outline with starfish. I LOVED it! I originally wanted this piece to be symmetrical and on my upper back....but Shawn suggested it to be placed on my upper left...down to the middle. He is so COOL in the way that he's persuasive and convincing WITHOUT being "pushy" - he has incredible vision. What he drew and tattood on me that day is perfect for MY body & shape....something I can live with forever and bulid on! I've had many awesome experiences at Gold Coast Tattoo and Body Piercing. My most recent one was by far the best. Every time I go in that shop, I'm greeted kindly and asked how I can be helped. The staff there is very friendly and helpful. I showed Rick Webster (my tattoo artist) the medallion I wanted replicated and tattooed on my shoulder. I wasn't sure exactly what style, shade, or types of detail I wanted included in my tattoo. Rick Webster took the time to talk with me about it, give me different ideas and tell me what he thought would look best considering his experience. He then quickly drew up a sketch. Once he showed me the sketch, it was perfect. Exactly what I wanted. He finished the tattoo in about 30 minutes. Not only was he fast, focused, vigilant, gentle, professional, and attentive while tattooing me, but he was also friendly and talkative, creating conversation to distract me from the tattooing process. My tattoo was done in no time, and it was perfect. I will never let anyone else tattoo me except Rick. Although, all the artists at Gold Coast are incredibly talented. Same with the piercer, Perry. Gold Coast has such a friendly staff, awesome atmosphere, extremely talented artists, great customer service, good prices, and keep an extremely well balanced business of professionalism with a little bit of fun!! I highly recommend going to Gold Coast for any new ink, touch-ups, piercings, or new jewelry. I, personally, won't go anywhere else for ink or piercings. :) Definitely 5-star experience every single time I go there!! read more

Worst tattoo shop in Monterey county. I had an appointment today that I had to miss because my mom was a raging alcoholic for 3 years. She has significant liver damage and today she was in incredible pain. I chose to skip my appointment with Carson because I wanted to be by moms side incase her liver failed. I didn't have cell service where I was at so I couldn't call and cancel. When I got home tried contacting g Carson and explaining this he said he didn't care and that he would never tattoo me again. He said even if my mom was on her death Ed keeping my appointment took presidence over being by moms side if her liver failed. At gold coast their only concern is their over priced work. I can get the same work done only better at Indian ink or studio 13 for a 1/4 of them. He then went on to insult me a bit then 86 me from ever getting work done there again all because I wanted to be by my mom's side. I will be pressing charges for proffessional misconduct and highly reminding if you want good work done for a fair price and have your artist actually show concern for you as a human being then go to Indian ink or studio 13. Gold coast is the worst possible place to get tattoos. Carson only stay pissed about me missing my appointment and didn't even bother to ask me if mymom was ok and be understanding and allow to reschedule instead he insulted me and 86d me. read more

My first experience with Gold Coast Tattoo was when I got my nose pierced about 1 1/2 years ago. It was pretty quick & painless & I love it! So when my son and I decided to both get tattoos on his 18th birthday, it was my first choice! In addition, my niece had received two tattoos there & and given positive reviews on the experience. Q did my son's tattoo, which was his grandmother's Buddist name in Japanese Kanji on his forearm. It turned out great and my son said that it didn't hurt at all. I was a little undecided on what to get for my tattoo, so after speaking with tattoo artist, Rick Webster, he came up with a beautiful design for me. It was relatively painless & healed very quickly. I loved it! So much so, that I decided to extend it to a back piece all the way down my back. I have received many compliments on the beautiful artwork & have referred many friends, family and even clients that I work with to Gold Coast Tattoo Studio. I think Rick Webster is an amazing & talented artist, along with Q, tattoo artist and Perry, their peircing specialist and would recommend this shop to anyone who is looking to have a tattoo or piercing done. :') read more

I'm completely happy with my experience at Gold Coast, and I will be going back. Let's just say I have been tattooed many times and I have experience dealing with tattoo shops and tattoo artists. I went in the shop during a down time. Rick was there and he was tattooing someone else when I got there, plus there was someone waiting before me. That's a good sign, for you people who have never been tattooed before....If I go into a shop and nobody is tattooing someone, I wonder why? And then I leave. I had a long conversation with a man working there, I think he was a piercer. He actually taught me alot about the placement of tattoos and explained to me about using "panels" on the body, because at this point, I have to strategically place my tattoos. THAT WAS REALLY COOL! I was going to put my tattoo in a place that could later become difficult if I was going to put a big piece there (which will probably happen). As far as the actual tattooing goes, the experience was good. The shop was clean and Rick is a fast and efficient tattooer. PS - don't forget to tip your artist! read more

I visited Monterey,Ca for the first time in July 2006, I had a great time there. I actually flew in from Ohio to meet a friend, that is now my fiancee. when we were in Monterey,Ca we did alot of great things together & we wanted to get a tattoo while we were in Monterey,Ca we found Gold Coast Tattoo in downtown Monterey,Ca. we got the same tattoo on the both of us & I had another tattoo touched up & had some more artwork added to it & the guy who did our tattoos was great !!! He also worked at another tattoo shop in another area . He was great & the tattoos he did have always been special to me.i moved from Ohio to Fresno,Ca in october 2007 to be with my fiancee. we have been to the coast quite a good bit & i am looking forward to stopping by the gold coast tattoo shop & getting another tattoo done real soon !!! i really enjoyed getting my tattoo there & the guy who did it had a great personality !!! First TATTOO. This place is great! I walked in and they were super busy with what seemed to be a big military crowd, who all seemed to have really good tattoos to display. They were still very friendly and helpful, I immediately felt comfortable and welcomed. I went in for a Japanese style tattoo.. They recommended their new artist Dave Sinor and after reviewing his portfolio I could see why. I started with a Phoenix on my shoulder that he drew on me (holy shit I was nervous- but damn I had no reason to be!!) it is beautiful and I can't wait to finish it- I already have ideas for the rest of my arm! He was very knowledgable about tattooing in general, and pressed the importance of the design holding up over time. He explained how a lot of tattoos look great at first but after a couple years don't look so great, he seemed to really know a lot about tattooing rather than just do them. In the end I'm super stoked on my experience and will only be going to Dave for the rest of my work!!! read more

Great experience from start to finish. Shawn Franco was the artist, and he completely transformed an old tattoo I had on my chest that looked a little crooked to say the least. Shawn got down on it and added a little flair to balance it out an it seriously looked like a new tattoo. Not only that but the guy was super chill as well. Not the typical over eccentric artist type, he treated me like a person and not a piece of canvas which is something hard to come by with many tattoo artists. Wasn't afraid to bullshit with you while you were getting tatted. Great experience over all and I highly recommend Shawn for his work and customer service. Made my tattoo completely sick and was even down to do a little tattoo on my ribs on the same day for more then a reasonable price. If you want to get a clean tattoo with a lot of artistic incite, Shawn the dude. Ace of the shop from what I can tell.! read more

Worst tattoo I've ever had! Some dumb crack head chick named Kelly tattooed my husbands name on my hip I laid stiff as a board for her mind you I have my entire ribs tattooed I can handle the pain. Well it took her more than an hour to stencil out an already drawn up stencil I made every time she kept bringing it back she kept screwing up more until I had to step in. I was nice didn't pressure her. But after my ink healed and I did take proper care of it I can see all the mistakes she made! I'll post a pic and highlight all the mistakes. I should of had the guy done it he seemed more experienced. I'm gonna get it lasered off so I can get a new one. I have plenty of tattoos but this is by a far landslide my worst! I hope that girl is fired. She had ALOT of space and couldn't make a straight line!!!! Please learn from my mistake people. read more

My tattoo experience at Gold Coast Tattoo was one of the best I have had. Everyone that worked there was very respectful and professional. When I walked in the girl up front came up to me with a smile on her face, it felt very welcoming. She answered all the questions I had. The questions she could not answer she asked one of the tattoo artists to come help me. The artist had no problem coming up to the front and answering my questions. I brought a picture of what I was looking for with a few ideas for changes to the actual picture. I left a reasonable deposit and came back an hour later. The artist drew exactly what I had explained. I ended up getting the work done the same day. I was treated very well! I will be back. The artist's name was Rick! Although from what I have heard all the artist's there are awesome! read more

Man gold coast is the shit. Ive got 5 tattoos done there and they are all amazing and still looking good. All my tattoos were done by Orlando that dude is sick as shit. I love that shop and i will continue to go there to make visits no matter where im stationed at. Oh and Crystal just fyi ive spent a lot of time in that shop and no semepr fi tats either yeah alot of military people go in there why cause we want legit tats and thats the place to go orlando, joe, nate, all are a fucking blast when i go in there if you're around monterey and looking to get a tat stop in and go to gold coast and dont listen to all the haters out there this is the place to be keep it up owner...sorry i dont remember your name but i love your shop and will always come back to visit...u will remember me if u see my pic and look in orlandos book read more

I ventured on over to Gold Coast this past Sunday to add to a piece I'd had done previously on my right arm and had a great experience! Uncle Tim was sitting in at Gold Coast that day and added two absolutely beautiful hummingbirds to my arm piece that he had started a year and a half ago, and I could not be happier! He really took time to collaborate with me, and the outcome is stunning -- he is a Master of color and depth, and always has some great stories to share. Everyone at the shop seemed very friendly, and since I was there for about 4 hours I had the opportunity to casually view some of the pieces other patrons were having done, and each piece of art being created was superb. There is a LOT of talent in that building! Kudos to Steve the owner (also a super friendly guy) for having such a skilled crew. read more

This place was hands down that best tattoo experience I have ever had. I'm from Fresno and get most of my tattoos from there. Today was Friday the 13th so I stopped by for their special. The way they ran their business was present from the get go. Completely organized, and welcoming. Which is hard to find especially on a day like this. I've had my experience with Friday the 13th tattoo events, and most of the time they are a mess. Gold Coast tattoo made things so easy, and was definitely worth the wait. HUGE shoutout to Justin for the amazing work he did on me. I was comfortable and felt the fun atmosphere the entire time I got my tattoo done. There are a lot of tattoo shops in Monterey. However, if you want a clean facility with friendly customer service and extremely skilled artists then Gold Coast is your best bet. This tattoo shop is the cleanest shop I have ever been in! It has nice wood floors, is spacey, and it is decorated awesome! You could play "I Spy" for days! I was in there on a busy day to get a piercing. The atmosphere was fun and inviting. I observed the tattoo artists out of curiosity, and they were doing some incredible quality stuff! It was one of those moments when you try to wrap your head around, asking yourself, "Why in the hell do some people have talent and I don't?" Perry, the piercer was super friendly, professional, and got all my sarcastic jokes (which I think is pretty important)! They had a good selection of titanium and organic jewelry. I had some awful tattoos on both arms for over 20 years, and I finally had the means to get cover ups. I found an artist I clicked with, and for almost 2 years, we've been tight. Her name is Lil" Jen, and she did excellent work on both my arms. You can't even see the original "disasters" underneath! Not only did she have to do coverups, but she had to cover up a bunch of tats on each arm...AND she tatted me with awesome tats I've always wanted! She will be doing some more art on my back. Her line work is impeccable, and her color is sweeeet. As for the other artists there, I've seen them working on other clients, and I've never seen any bad work from any of them. My girlfriend and I went in last Sunday on a whim to get matching tattoos. We walked right in talked with Charlotte and Q. My girlfriend had got a tattoo from him a few months back and we were happy with his work. We showed him what we wanted. He was with a client and asked if we minded waiting or would come back in an hr or so. We went shopping and I got a call about 45 minutes later and got started. Q was great he was quick but really efficient. He even touched up a tattoo above the one he was working on. He did my girlfriends tattoo really well as well. I would recommend gold coast to anybody. My wife and I were visiting Pacific Grove for our 20th anniversary. We wanted to both get tattoos to remember the occasion. I went in to visit the shop and really liked Dave Sinor's work in his portofolio. I spoke with Dave on Thursday afternoon and he booked us for Thursday evening. We gave him the concept and he drew it up for us, It was exactly what we had in mind. Dave was great to work with and made us both feel very comfortable. My experience at Gold Coast Tattoo Shop was incredibly disappointing and upsetting. I went in to get my septum pierced, but unfortunately, it was done incorrectly. Firstly, the atmosphere of the shop was unwelcoming and unprofessional. It lacked cleanliness and organization, which immediately made me uneasy. However, I decided to proceed with the piercing, hoping for the best. The piercer seemed inexperienced and rushed, which should have been a red flag but what was worse was that it was placed incorrectly.
