The ex-Palmetto / Flora space is now a cute, friendly space for casual cocktails and Pakistani inspired bites. I've been here a couple times (once for food, and once for drinks) and both times have been charmed by the friendly bartenders (shout out to Haya!) and the cheerful vibe. Don't be intimidated by the exotic sounding food. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but everything was delicious and not too overpowering. We had daal, samosa, and rice bowl. I unfortunately failed to take pics, but the dishes were all so cute and pretty! The cocktails are excellent as well. (Side note: My friends were really impressed with the flattering lighting in the bathrooms here. If you need an ego boost or a nice selfie, take a peek!) After drinks at Gold Palm, we went to their speakeasy, Moon Glow. Entry is through the left side of the bar, in what was formerly Fauna. It was a little too dark and narrow for my taste, but some people might like the small club vibe. Their drink, Clover Club, was my fave. I'm so glad the people of Bar Shiru revived this beautiful Uptown space. Will def come back! read more

This was our first stop to get some quick small bites and cocktails before going to other place that evening. We ordered some food to share and got to try several cocktails. For the food, we tried the beet hummus, smashed eggplant, poutine fries, cauliflowers, and crispy chicken samosa rolls. For the cocktails, I only tried one cocktail called ultraviolet and my friends ordered some other kinds (I forgot their names). Overall, I thought the price was reasonable for the food and drinks. However, we all agreed that nothing was really special or bad served in this place. I, myself, am not rushing to return, but glad I got to try this place. read more

Hope you like blueberries cause they have a ton of them here. I never knew there were so many varieties of blueberries. The place is vast and they even have peaches and nectarines and such. I'm guessing other fruits whenever they are in season? Staff was young, like summer job type young running the registers. They were nice and not your typical douche bag tennis with bad attitudes you run into at retail stores lol. They have wagons and buckets they provide. They will also bag your fruits for you. To my surprise it was a "decent" price. My lovely better half for some reason decided to pick enough blueberries for 20 years . It came out to less than what I thought. New community gathering spot - perfect snacks, bespoke beverages and incredible humans. A friend and I read about this new restaurant opening with a hidden speakeasy and knew we needed to visit. We arrived a little after 6:00pm on a Thursday and the space was bustling, but not overcrowded. We grabbed a table and proceeded to order half the menu. Everything was prepared with love and attention, the flavor combinations, textures and presentation were impeccable. In order of personal preference, I would rank the bites as follows: cheese toasty (enhanced by adding the trumpet mushrooms to the sandwich), chicken samosas and veggie samosas. I am not typically a dessert person, but we were recommended the seasonal crumble and it was my absolute favorite part of the meal! The cocktails and mocktails were equally delicious, which was a great surprise, as I needed to drive but still wanted to party. As we were wrapping up our meal, we ran into a friend who was heading to their speakeasy in the back. No cameras are allowed inside, and their cocktail list is 100% distinct from the main dining room. You ring a doorbell and wait to be greeted with the speakeasy menu upon entering. The space is dark and more of an intimate gathering space compared to the open restaurant. The speakeasy is a nice complement and allows patrons to pick according to their mood. I recently revisited Gold Palm since they were hosting a Lion Dance Cafe pop up. I figured why not support two great local businesses in one go. Food wise, I went with the tofu burger from the pop up and I have to it was probably one of the best vegan sandwiches I've ever had. The tofu patty was HUGE and super juicy and flavorful. Honestly, I wish I could fix my tofu like that. I decided to was the sandwich down with Gold Palm's signature cocktail (the Gold Palm lol). This drink has clarified coconut milk, bourbon, and spices. It was super refreshing and on the sweeter side. While there was quite the wait to get in for the pop up, the servers and staff were courteous and welcoming. I hope to come back and grab more of their cocktails and maybe even catch another pop up or collab. read more

We came and they said it was a party celebrating their opening so there were special drinks on the menu and they gave out free pickles. The service was attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. It was lively but not too loud. The drinks were all complex and delicious and we learned that they're lower ABV. The food is Pakistani inspired. The portions were more like tapas or izakaya style so slightly smaller so we could try more things. We got samosa, mushroom skewer, cheese toast, and the crumble dessert. All the food was delicious and my favorite was the mushrooms, which had a bouncy texture. The pickles also helped to balance out the fried or cheesy parts of the items. Some of our friends moved to the heart of downtown Oakland and when we visited, we wanted a place we could all walk to! Gold Palm is soooooo cool. It's kind of themed out with an oasis eclectic vibe.... very inviting. Customer Service was very attentive! This is the type of place where you order at the counter, and then find seating room from there. It's tiny inside, but we all managed to snag a booth for 4. I met a friend here for dinner on a Thursday night and had a lovely time. It was both of our first times and I was expecting a jam packed bar, but it was a surprisingly large space with plenty of seating available. It felt like a "sit at the bar" place so I grabbed a seat while I waited for my friend. I arrived at the tail end of "Golden Hour" so I ordered the Italo Disco and masala fries while I waited. Italo Disco: While this was refreshing and pleasant, it's not something I would order again. Ultraviolet: After the Italo Disco, I wanted to try the Jazz Handz but they were out of one of the ingredients so I went with the Ultraviolet. There was an aftertaste about it that I didn't like, which might have been the gin or the creme de violette. Others might love it, it wasn't for me. Masala fries: Delicious but I might pause if I had to pay regular price ($9) Crispy veggie samosas: Tasty and hearty, like that they didn't skimp on the fillings. Chicken patties: The name of this is confusing because they're not shaped like patties. Delicious with a bit of a spicy kick. Chili cheese toasty: We got this with a side salad. Salad was nicely dressed and the toasty was good, dare I say I wouldn't have been mad to have more of the filing. The services at the bar was good, even as the crowd began to pick up. Overall, I dug the ambiance and the food, but their cocktail menu isn't really meant for my tastes. On the way out though, we popped into Moonglow to see what it was like, and their cocktails were much more my speed. Next time, I'd do bites at Gold Palm and drinks at Moonglow. read more

1 star I'm deeply saddened by my experience at the Gold Palm x Lion Dance pop-up. A couple of weeks prior, I invited friends via Partiful to casually join me at the pop-up for my birthday. I wasn't throwing a party--just hoping friends would come through to support one of my favorite food creators, Lion Dance. Nineteen people RSVP'd yes, but we arrived in waves and waited in line like everyone else. One friend showed the invite to the owner while asking if a larger group could be accommodated. While I hadn't asked her to do this, I understood her intention. What followed was shocking and uncalled for. The owner told her, "You should just leave now. Tell your friend she needs to go somewhere else. What gives her the audacity to think she can throw her party here?" Later, when other friends requested a four-top, they were told, "If you're with that party, you all need to leave," and were denied service. When I arrived, I tried to clarify that we were arriving in small groups and waiting in line like everyone else, but the owner told me we weren't welcome. It escalated when an Asian male friend, trying to advocate for us, was told, "Be careful. I can turn you all away." He later pointed out that her behavior was out of line and called her a Karen, to which she responded by banning our entire group from dining. My Black friends and I were repeatedly approached, questioned, and treated with hostility, despite doing nothing disruptive. Other patrons held space for friends without issue. The targeting felt personal and racially biased. When another friend tried to mediate, the owner refused to give a manager's contact after suggesting we "talk to the manager," and added, "You can't eat here because your friend is an asshole." I left feeling humiliated and unwelcome. We ended up going to Sobre Mesa, where we were welcomed with warmth and respect. I had supported Gold Palm just two days earlier, which made this all the more disappointing. The issue was never about seating--it was about the way we were treated. I hope the business reflects on how to treat guests equitably and with kindness, especially at events meant to be joyful. -- Chelsea read more

Happy hour from 4-6pm was quiet even on Friday night. Atmosphere was cozy, they had a nice fire playing on the tv. I had grilled cheese on oversized toast that was the right gooey & crunch. My wife and I were really excited to try Gold Palm after having a positive experience at Bar Shiru. However, we could not determine from its website whether the Saturday opening hours were 4 pm or 5 pm. When, just to be on the safe side, we arrived at 5:05 pm (and found a sign on the door indicating a 4 pm opening time), it was still dark and empty inside. Then, when we returned ten minutes later, we spotted a human being walking into a backroom, but the front door was still locked, the lights were still off and the person did not respond to our knocking. We gave up. How is this a way to run a business? While I realize that sometimes things happen, I have this experience far too often in the East Bay, where hours are either not posted, changed without notice or simply disregarded. It is so incredibly inconsiderate to your customers, who may have (as we did) driven from a distance to spend their money in your establishment. We ended up going instead to Popoca in Old Oakland, which was exceptional. We will not be giving Gold Palm another try. read more

Took my friend here for her birthday and it was the first time at Gold Palm for both of us. We both liked our drinks, though my friend felt that hers was a bit small. We also ordered food which was mediocre and over priced. We ordered the winter vegetable salad (basically roasted veggies), the chicken skewers (two very small skewers) and the dal. All of it was overpriced for the amount of food and quality. Will definitely just get drinks next time. We peaked into the speak easy and will try on our next visit! read more

Gold Palm is the new project from the duo that brought us Bar Shiru, Daniel and Shirin. The beautiful Art Deco room is a great place to hang and they kept the plants from Palmetto, which was is the space for a few years. The menu is mostly Pakistani party food from her mom's play list, now refined for restaurant service. The bites menu is akin to tapas or chaat and totally fun to eat: Crispy veggie samosas - with the lightest, crispiest wrapper and a couple of house chutneys $9 Chicken skewers - featuring Mary's organic chicken, well-marinated and then charbroiled and served with a righteous raita $12 Masala fries - on the skinny side, the way I like my fries, serve with ranch or curried ketchup unless you plead for both like we did. $9 From the salad menu: We considered the Market Salad, which looked good, but hearing about the seasonal tomatoes in the other salad took us there. Cucumber salad with a very nice combo of tomatoes and cucumbers sliced and diced with red onion & cilantro. Not your ordinary cucumber salad due to the amazing roasted lemon vinaigrette $12 I can't say enough about the bar program. They brought in one of the old Bar Shiru bartenders, Sammy, to devise refreshing drinks to go with the flavorful menu. The Ultraviolet - with colorful layers of creme de violette, gin & sparkling wine, and a red wine float - was so delicious. The best drink I've had in months. My wife's Say La Vee was really good too. It's really cool that they've focused on having West Coast liquors and beers. Restaurants everywhere are all about local now. However, I haven't come across a bar with a reduced carbon footprint like Gold Palm. This is super-relevant, because when I asked the bartender to make me her choice of a gin drink, she pulled a sneaky trick. A coupe glass showed up with this perfectly clear drink and a lemon twist. It was citrusy and delightful, like frolicking in an orange or lemon orchard while they're blossoming. It turns out the drink was simply the brand new Valley Gin from Alameda's St. George simply chilled and an instant party. It wasn't sweet, but reminded me of a limoncello because was so citrusy. Just gin and a twist! However, it had real complexity and the orange, grapefruit and lemon flavors delighted my palette. When I go back next time, I'm ordering the Carter III. It's an homage to an homage. My favorite drink on Palmetto's menu was the Carter Beats the Devil with tequila and mezcal. Their owners had the drink on the menu because it was their favorite from their predecessors in the space, Flora, and they had brought back the drink along with some of Flora's staff. So Carter III is the tribute by the next generation in the space! I like the room's combination of a long bar, booths and a long tall table with high tops. It feels like a party. We ate at the bar and Sammy and our bartender were super-friendly. Shirin really is the hostess with the mostest, so we were treated well from the start. Every once in awhile the most important thing I can say to friends about a restaurant is, "run, don't walk." This is definitely the most important thing I can write in this Yelp! Run, don't walk to Gold Palm if you want to check out a Pakistani party where I guarantee you will have big fun in your mouth. 5-stars. That is all. read more

The interior is great, and there's a very sexy and hip speakeasy next door (same owner, ring the doorbell), but the best part are the cocktails and the food.
