A no frills place Gold Star is a small takeout place, there is no table seating inside. I stopped by to get a couple of donuts to eat while driving home. As soon as I walked in and looked at the display cases, I knew I wanted their Apple Fritter. It was great, definitely sweet but not overwhelming, with a bit of a crunch. I still wanted a donut and selected their White Cream donut, with chocolate on top. It was also great. There were no other customers when I arrived so it was a quick in and out, not much interaction with the person helping me. She seemed nice. I ended up laying my treats on the hood of my car to take a photo, and while I was messing around doing that I saw several other customers stopping in for their donut fix. read more

Hole in the wall donut shop just north of the Sarasota Airport. Nothing fancy about the place but it's a donut shop. They service you with a smile, and seems to be a family run business. If you are looking for old school types of donuts without all the crazy toppings this is the place. They also have kolaches for breakfast and some unconventional croissants one with strawberry/cheese which is a winner. If you want some donuts that aren't small this is the place. If you want a donut place where they don't overcharge you for donuts this is definitely the place. We usually grad donuts from them once a week for the office. read more

What can you say about a donut shop? Either the donuts are good or they are not right? THESE donuts are FANTASTIC. Soft, fresh, and delicious! You can tell they are made with a love for the craft. The people that work there (the owners?) are super friendly and act like they are genuinely happy you chose their shop. That kind of humbleness is severely lacking these days. This donut shop used to be my favorite many years ago and I recently heard it reopened. I had to check it out and I am so glad I did. The donuts were outstanding years ago and they were still amazing. They offer normal donuts. Nothing too fancy, but they make basic donuts the proper way. What is more American than doughnuts? Not much! When visiting Sarasota and surrounding areas I first discovered this mom and pop doughnut shop and put it on my list as places I must visit. When I finally found myself there yesterday morning I was not disappointed. We were greeted by an older man who said he had been making these pillowy treats for 28 years in the same spot where he exists today! Pretty cool if you ask me. The donut shop was modest and no frills and there wasn't a place to sit down. It's basically grab-and-go here. The cases housed a nice array of doughnuts: yeast raised, cake, long-john, buttermilk, sour cream, twists, applesauce, frosted, unfrosted, stuffed yeast donuts, etc. when we arrived around lunch time on a Monday all of the coveted creme-filled donuts were exhausted but there were plenty of other treats to be had. The donuts are purportedly made fresh daily and I can attest to the fresh taste of them. We got a supreme assortment of "donuts" to try being as it was our first time. The glazed yeast raised, Boston cream (yes, it's traditionally spelled "cream"), and the apple fritter were amongst my favorites. I also enjoyed the chocolate cake (despite not having a rich chocolate flavor) and the buttermilk doughnuts. We didn't not like anything. I appreciated that the doughnuts seemed fresh and weren't very oily. Also, at around 85 cents per doughnut, they are very nicely priced. The shop is located off the beaten path off in a not-so pretty strip mall. Don't let the appearance inhibit you from going. Go treat yourself to some sugary goodness or share with friends one morning and j don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

After reading some reviews and hearing about the Holy donuts, I decided to venture into this strange part of town that I have never been to. It is in a quaint little strip mall, on a small road near a bunch of industrial complexes. Right next door to a "Sauna," which is nothing new in Bradenton. We came in around lunchtime and there were still tons of donuts. This is mostly because it was Friday July 3rd and many people in the area had the day off from work. Normally, I hear that they run out of donuts early. The pricing structure is a little strange; the donuts range in price from $0.55-$0.85 and the pricing is on the wall to the left, not listed on the trays themselves. We ordered six donuts, and it was a little over $5.00, so we must have chosen the high end donuts. I highly recommend the Apple Fritter and the Bear Claw. For those of you that have been craving the raised donuts from Krispy Kreme, but there is not one of to found in the area, then Gold Star can provide that same raised goodness but better flavor. The dough itself is very flavorful and delicious, like eating the best waffle ever or a fresh funnel cake. The donuts are crisp, not too greasy, and oh so delicious. read more

We got donuts yesterday and my husband got long-Johns and said they were good. I got a glazed twist and it was ok, but it sure needed to be alit more light and airy. Also got a couple bear claws with apple filling and they were terrible. I warmed it a few seconds in the micro and they were absolutely grease soaked and down right nasty.
