I've been to Goldberry twice, both during a short return trip to this small Ohio town where I grew up. It's a strange thing, rolling into a place brimming with memory. You find so much the same, seemingly caught in time, and other things have greatly changed. Goldberry is one of those "new to me" additions to Ashland, and every time I walk through its doors, I find myself grateful that it is a part of this town's growth and change. Brightly lit, warmly modern, with touches of wood, crisp white, and greenery, the shop holds ample space to gather together with friends or sit comfortably by oneself, sipping an espresso, cortado, or dirty chai with almond milk (my personal choice today) while people-watching or reading a book. Tall windows line the front of the building, looking out upon a bustling parking lot and side-street as multiple baristas efficiently work away behind the bar. Fresh donuts were being sold at a stand as I entered, along with bagged beans and a variety of other bottled/canned beverages. People sat outside, in groups around larger tables, or in more relaxed leather chairs, animatedly caught up in conversation. Goldberry feels like a true 'third place' in Ashland - not your home, not your workplace, but that third place where you go to meet friends, begin your day, or center yourself before stepping out into the world. It's fittingly named in that light, given that Goldberry is the warmly welcoming, hospitable, and wise woman in JRR Tolkien's work who offers comfort and guidance to questing hobbits, the beautiful and mysterious 'river-woman's daughter' who married the enigmatic Tom Bombadil, a man whose magic was older than time. This coffee shop is all of those things: welcoming, warm, bright, and more than a little magical, glowing like a water-washed jewel - or fairly-sourced coffee bean - in the midst of this ever-changing tiny mid-Ohio town. Such a cool spot. I was in Ohio with my son and this shop was recommended by our Air Bnb host. So glad I listened to them because it was great. Very clean, cool vibe, great customer service and the coffee was really good. I ended going back twice during my stay and even hung out for a couple of hours just to relax. Probably my favorite locally owned coffee shop in the area (that I have tried) They were very helpful with ordering. Friendly. & the iced coffees I had were yummy! Def have a coffee taste, not just pure sugar like some places. Def add cold foam on top, like they recommend. I visited here more than once during our 4 month OH residency. Would def recommend trying out & have to quite a few people in the area! The drive thru is kind of interesting lol not terrible but interesting esp if you have a larger vehicle. I have a suburban so it was interesting trying to swing it wide enough to get to the window. I had to pull forward & back up some & then go toward the window. This coffee shop is amazing! They brew their own coffee and it's one of the best I have ever tried! They also have really great prices ($13 for 12 oz bag of coffee, which is a lot cheaper than back home)! Also had the pleasure of tasting the blackberry lavender latte which was to die for! I was very impressed with Goldberry on many levels. Let's start from the outside. Located next to Tin Can Chandelier, these two buildings together set a warm and homey yet sophisticated ambience, similar to what I've seen and experienced in Sonoma Valley wine country. Located within a niche isolates this store from high traffic on Clairmont further adding to the relaxing environment. Stepping inside you're introduced with a beautiful open and airy layout with contemporary decor and furnishings juxtaposed against the rustic/industrial coffee roasters located in the back of the store. I visited Goldberry on three occasions to get a statistically significant sampling of their services and products. Service: The first visit service was amiss and a bit off putting. There was no one in line when I approached the register, and the staff were a bit too caught up in gossiping to know I was there or take my order. The subsequent two days service was better. While the service was average; it didn't feel like it lived up to the feel of the rest of the store. This could be cultural though and perhaps in this market a more sophisticated staff would be off putting. Coffee: Given that espresso is the base of most of their coffee drinks my first order was a single shot of espresso, so I could understand what the drinks were being built on. At the pick counter I want handed a doppio (double shot) not the single shot I had requested...uuuhhhh ok.?. The espresso was shockingly AMAZING....very fruity and bright just what I would expect from a full shot or in this case a doppio. I asked for a ristretto to get a taste of the front of the coffee, but they did not know how to pull a ristretto...not a big deal. Over the next couple visits I tried their latte, cappuccino, and mocha; they all had a very apparent and common issue...way too milk forward. The espresso based coffee drinks are not balanced at all; I think this is partially due to the milk not being properly frothed which gives the milk the correct texture and flavor for the drink. read more

I've become a regular here (1-3 times/week). The coffee is good and their cold brew is honestly some of the best that I've ever had. They just recently added an espresso bar and have done well executing the new drink selection. Be sure to pick up some beans to brew some well roasted coffee at home too. Fregué coffee beans are roasted in house and they're freshly grounded for each cup as it's ordered! We got a 12oz bag of beans for only $9, as someone from the big city, Columbus, this was a great deal! I was so happy to support a local business, their coffee was so yummy and creamy, I also got a green tea and it was loose leaf, not a prepackaged bag, and they filled up a large back of leaves for my tea. I was very impressed by their knowledge with coffee and tea drinks, definitely coming back, their hours are a little silly though, I haven't been able to go because they close so early, wish they were open until 3 or 5! read more

We found this place haphazardly on Google Maps when we were driving from Cleveland to Columbus and my wife said "see if you can find us a good little cafe". We walk in as the owner is shoveling beans in to the copper roaster before our eyes. They have a bourbon barrel aged roast, and they have heavy cream out instead of half and half. Wow. We ordered a full week's worth of pot samples, mostly mid to dark roasts. Even the ones that aren't our favorite, we like. Every pot is smooth and the beans are roasted evenly and perfectly. I'm a bit of a coffee snob, and I can say this coffee, any roast, is stellar. I first picked it up at a hardware store, the big one next to the kitchen in Stark County- don't want to name names here. It was too light of a roast for us, but I decided to check out the website. This morning we had the Kenya AA. Best coffee I've ever had, perfect in every way. We still have three more to try, so there's still a chance that I can find another one I like as much. The one thing I know for certain is this place makes the best coffee and we will be ordering more, 100%. Don't think too hard here, go to the website and get some. Samples are cheap, one pot to try ranges 2.50 to 3.50. Cheaper than a single cup at that chain where the lines are too long and what you really get is cheap, burnt beans. I'm thinking of getting some as gifts also, I truly think people who don't like coffee or put those nasty flavored chemical creamers in yucky coffee...I think those people would enjoy this real, awesome coffee.
