    Dosa, lamp chops, tikka masala
    Terry C.

I absolutely recommend this place. I shared with two other people and we ordered three mains: Dosa, lamp chops, and the tikka masala curry. The lamp chops were a bit dry but the curry they gave with it went along great with it. Everything else tasted so authentic too! The best part is that this entire spread was 36£ with drinks!!!! We were stuffed by the end of our meal and the service is great as well.

After a busy day of baking 500 cupcakes (don't ask) I was needing feeding and I was in the mood for a curry. Our local favourite had recently closed so we needed to find somewhere new. The spot which is now the Golden Ambal has changed hands several times in the last year so we were a bit skeptical but based on recent Yelp reviews we decided to give it a shot. I ordered the Paneer Dosa and a side Makhani lentils. David had a lamb dish and a naan, we shared some onion pakoras too. We ordered a collection on JustEat and our order was ready to pick up from the friendly staff in snazzy gold waistcoats when we arrived. The food - tremendous!! My dosa was light and the filling beautifully flavoured. All the accompaniments came individually packaged and included a delicious home made mango chutney. Far better than the sickly sweet jarred stuff. The onion pakoras were light, tasty and not soaked in grease. David lamb was amazingly tender and in a rich spicy gravy. The star of the show were my lentils. They were awesome! So rich, creamy and delicately spiced. We were both very pleasantly suprised with the food and the price, coming in at under £20. I hope it stays around longer than it's previous owners as we have found our new favourite! Cheers, Amy

The bun maska was perfectly drenched in butter, and the chai was hot and comforting. The chili chicken was also really flavorful with the perfect spice level. For our mains, we got the Ruby Chicken and House Black Dal with garlic naan, chili paratha, and a side of plain rice. The Ruby Chicken had a delicious tomato gravy, and the chicken pieces were really soft. The dal was thick and creamy. Everything paired together so well. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself was beautiful, with a Bombay-inspired atmosphere. There's seating both upstairs and downstairs, and while we didn't have any issues, I've heard there can be long wait times. Our server was friendly, although the service felt a little sloppy at times. They also surprised us with complimentary champagne since we were celebrating a special occasion, which was really nice. I found the portions to be a little smaller, and it's definitely on the pricier side, but I think it's worth the splurge. If you're visiting the UK, I'd definitely recommend checking out Dishoom!

And the service is attentive. It's a beautiful thing to witness, even better to experience. My Negroni order was sent to the bar while my server and I chatted about what I might like. So efficient. I ended up ordering a couple of small plates. A spicy lamb dish and a hot/cold combo of yogurt and mashed hot veggies. Rather quickly my drink was served and a short while later my food appeared. Those small plates were not so small! Loads of food for one, perfect starters for two. Finished with a house chai - delicious!

I ordered a wee bit of carry out from Kama Sutra for a Friday night at home celebration. Overall,…read morethe quality of the food was quite good. The items purchased included KADAI PANEER, LAMB KORMA, and FISH PAKORA. As usual, I will itemise my reviews for each of these foods. In terms of food quality, the most important aspect of a restaurant review, the food was truly SUMPTUOUS, RICH, and TENDER-MEATED. The kadai paneer, which contained paneer with stewed vegetables, was adequately seasoned, flavourful, and succulent. I will say, the quantity of paneer included was MINIMAL, but that is how these restaurants SCAM you: they give you a hefty portion of the cheap stuff, but are overly restrained when it comes to the proteinous goodness. As for the lamb korma, it was RICH. Served in a thique spicy and sweet coconut sauce as yellow as the yolk of a quail's egg, with tender morsels of a lamb's meat, this dish was tantalising. And, finally, the fish pakora. It was flavourful and spiced with a reasonable level of flakiness, such that it was moist but not soggy on the interior and crisp on the exterior. It was served with a delicious yoghurt sauce and a tiny rubbish bag filled with 'salad'. Overall, the food warrants four (4) stars. I have deducted one (1) star due to the LACK OF CARBOHYDRATE in this meal. Little did we know, the saucy dishes are not served with rice or naan. Fortunately, this was carry out and I had some mediocre Co-op naans on hand to seep up the many unctions. So, beware: you must order RICE or NAAN or another INSTRUMENT with which to consume your food, unless you prefer to simply drink the thique and rich juices as you would a cup of tea. Because this food was carried out and consumed in the comfort of my home, I do not factor service, ambience, or other in-restaurant factors into this review. That includes the supposed sex theme of the restaurant. Perhaps one day I will venture in for the full experience.

The last stellar rating was 3 years ago and that should tell you something. The food is mediocre,…read morebut what really garnered the low score is the shakedown one gets from the staff expecting a big tip for poor service. First we had to wait nearly 20 minutes just to get a waiter to come over to give us water. The food took more than 30 minutes for an appetizer and one main and bread. We were lucky. Both couples seated on either side of us, and who were there when we were seated, were still waiting for their food after us. The place was only 50% full, so not sure why service was so poor. Tables are so close together that you worry that your bottom will clear the table next to you when getting up and down! When the bill finally came, we couldn't wait to leave and pick up what remained of our afternoon. We paid cash to hurry the process, leaving a 10% tip which was generous considering our experience. One of the staff came over took the bill and came back saying that they didn't have a service charge. Yeah, so? He kept repeating that there was no service charge included, so we should consider a larger tip. What a shakedown! BEWARE. This restaurant provides shoddy service, blah food and then will try and embarrass you to give them a hearty tip. Stay away!

I found this place as rated one of the better Indian restaurants in Edinburgh that does vegan options. I don't get it. We arrived for dinner on a Monday, and their vegan menu online was not shown on the dine-in menu, so I asked the server about this, and they told me what could be made vegan -- at least they were familiar with the concept. We got a vegan Balti and vegan Rogan Josh (each about £10.50), plus some tandoor roti (£3.50 each) and papadams and dipping sauce (another ~£4). The Rogan Josh was the oiliest Indian dish I've ever tried had in my life. The dish was swimming in oil. Beyond that, there wasn't much complexity in flavour beyond high saltiness. The Balti had the same saltiness / lack of depth issue, but at least wasn't as oily. We were quite disappointed in the lack of flavour depth in both dishes, especially compared to the Indian food you can get in the UK in general. What's more, the portion sizes were not especially big, so we really relied on the roti to be full. Very disappointing Indian food overall. We would definitely not return.
