It's very hard to get Chinese food right, but at the Golden Bowl they do!
This isn't really a restaurant. Although they do have canteen style tables outside and a few bar style tables inside, this is more of a takeaway rather than a sit in experience.
The staff were very pleasant, helping us with our order and giving recommendations as the menu is very extensive, and once we had ordered you could see the food being made freshly, which is always appreciated.
We went for the set menu for 2, a selection of starters, sweet and sour chicken, beef in black bean sauce, and egg fried rice.
Chinese food can be very repetitive, have a tendency to be soggy or greasy, and leave you feeling either diabetic or grimy.
Although our selection was very run of the mill, the starters were crispy (I had a particular fondness for the wonton), whilst the sweet and sour chicken was sugary, it didn't leave you feeling sick and the beef in black bean sauce was filled with beef and vegetables (which are usually substituted for bean sprouts), and it wasn't chewy.
As a side we also ordered sweetcorn and chicken soup, this had a very liberal amount of soft chicken pieces.
I noticed on the menu they also have dim sum, soft shell crab as well as crispy fried crab claws, something that I feel many restaurants get wrong. I'd be interested to see if they get these as right as the meal we had here. read more
