I'm not from West Virginia, so I asked for recommendations from local people. Everyone said this place was great and the Yelp reviews were good so I thought it would give it a try. I ordered 2 hand rolls and ikura sushi. The handrolls were ok but the chef should NEVER have served that ikura. The roe was all dried up and shriveled. I sent it back. The hostess and server were very pleasant and professional. No complaints there. They also have Chinese food so if I ever come back I will stick to that. I did get some fried banana for dessert but I'm bringing it back to the hotel for later so I haven't tried it yet Editing to add that I just took the fried banana out of the bag. They put the honey and some peanuts separately which was smart. However the menu said the portion is "for 2" it is at most one banana. We stopped here on a cross-country trip. TBH my expectations were not very high. I was pleasantly surprised. We ordered four plates for three travelers, as well as an appetizer (the scallion pancakes). We got a couple of chicken dishes (which both included mixed veggies), a dish with green beans and squares of tofu, and Mapo Tofu (sort of a soup with tofu and a light meat sauce). The food was good, and other than that appetizer the portions were generous. The staff are great and the prices are excellent. I lived in Taiwan for a number of years, so I know good Chinese food when I find it. This was pretty good. The only reason I dinged them was those scallion pancakes; next time I'm getting the fried or boiled dumplings. I would definitely recommend Golden Chopsticks if you are in Wheeling WV. Id love to give a 4 or 5 because the food was amazing and is why we will return but our service was very lackluster. We were questioning the location but it for sure is a hidden gem and very old school type of Chinese restaurant. The decor is great and there is a specials board when you walk in. We were in the area on a Saturday evening and wanted to try somewhere new in the area. It was busy but we got a table right away, however we were not visited by a server for quite awhile. Other tables got water and hot tea, we had to ask for the water and never were offered tea. The menu is quite overwhelming but we managed to narrow down some ideas for appetizers, I went with the typical hot & sour soup ( it was different than I have had before and so flavorful) and an egg roll which much to my surprise even though it was just cabbage it was tasty. My husband ordered the jalapeno sushi app because it was so unique. It was a cream cheese and tuna stuffed pepper then deep fried, he was it was so good. I ordered the seafood delight, I would order again but alter some of the veggies and he order crispy kung pao and added hot chili oil. I would only suggest asking for more rice as they only give you a tea cup full. We will return but sit on other side of restaurant so we know we are seen. We were the only ones in our area that were frustrated. We weren't in a rush but just hungry, however another couple was mad and said they weren't coming back. read more

What better way to celebrate the year of the tiger than a Chinese lunch....in a town(which happens to be an island) I've never heard of, or been to....which might actually not have a Chinese population greater than a a family or two. The menu features all the things you'd expect...fried rice, egg rolls, soups, dumplings, general tso, beef n broccoli...on and on and on. The highlights for me are the general tso and eggs rolls. The chicken is moist and delicious. The eggs rolls ...the crispiest I have ever had. The fried rice was a little underwhelming but overall this is great quality. Golden Chopsticks isn't just filling a void, it's high quality Chinese food at an extremely reasonable price. This could have gone oh so wrong, but Yelp never fails me. Hands down the best Chinese food in Wheeling, a real hidden gem. Largely unchanged in over 15 years since I've been going there. I've since moved away from the area, but recently stopped in for dinner and was delighted that all the food was the same. The service has always been a little hit or miss depending on the server, but who cares because the food is worth it. It's a great dining atmosphere. I highly recommend the fried dumplings and crab rangoons for apps. Good luck finding some that are better elsewhere, I haven't. The pu pu platter is a favorite of mine as well. All of the usual "takeout dishes" are available and you will find exceedingly higher quality than your average takeout spots. Other good dishes are Szechuan chicken, black pepper beef, Thai chili chicken, and house duck. If you're driving by town on the interstate, highly recommend stopping by for a meal. Have been here twice with family a really enjoyed both meals. The restaurant is well designed with nice wood work and a friendly atmosphere. The staff is friendly and try to help you as fast as they can even during busy times. I've had their beef with black pepper and their twice cooked pork which were both very flavorful and meals I enjoyed a lot. I also have tried their cream cheese and crab meat wonton which was deliciously crispy and rich and their scallion pancake which is has a nice crunch with a soft interior and good onion flavor. My family and I decided to try this restaurant as we were driving through the area. When we walked in the door, we were hit by a cloud of tobacco smoke. We probably should have left as the smell was everywhere and rather unpleasant. We were seated quickly. The dining area is charming and the women's restroom was clean. We had a brand new server who had to be reminded that we needed the lemon sauce for the lemon chicken, but she was polite and did a good job for her first day serving (she earned 4 stars). The food did not impress us. It was bland compared to the same dishes at other places. The fried rice was lackluster and didn't have any veggies. A dear friend first introduced me to a place in Wheeling many years ago that was the first experience for many in Wheeling to enjoy Chinese food. While that place, beloved by many, is now gone... their most popular waiter who was an integral part of the establishment started his own business on the Island. Always welcome competition. The ambience is wonderful, well lit, clean, and water features and music. As you are guided to your table all of the tapestries of a Chinese restaurant are there. Very Zen for sure. The menu is fantastic. Everything you would expect, but my god the prices. Having lived in Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Dallas - you should expect to pay 2 or 3 times what these guys charge. Ordering - the staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. We ordered soups, egg rolls, and split the main course, szechuan beef. First off the hot and sour soup comes. Anywhere else in America this is a sweet thick mess. Not here; it's at the simplest and most flavorful. Light broth, salt, egg, and other basic ingredients. Not sweet. But wonderful. A dash of pepper to suit and you are amazed. Next up the egg roll. Not frozen, tastes fresh, good ingredients. Mains came: szechuan beef Now, anywhere else in the states this is beef strips, some basic carrots and celery and the ruined with a syrupy overly sweet sauce. Not here. Here it's what I expect. Not sweet but barely a tad. Carrots are thin and sparse - just enough. Celery lonely sliced and properly thick. Vegetables are tender-crisp. And then the beef - very properly done as expected. I have been across the US and Europe and everywhere else the always get these simple dishes wrong. Martin gets it right. If you pass through Wheeling and want proper Chinese; come here. Typical Chinese food. Tried the spring roll and general tsao chicken. Spring roll was small with thin flakey wrapper and vegetable filling. Someone is n another review mentioned the "amazing duck sauce" I only got the regular packet duck sauce available in most Chinese restaurants. General tsao was pretty good. Sauce is more sweet than spicy. Chicken was lightly breaded. My husband got the chicken chow fun...which isn't actually on the menu. It had good flavor but the rice noodle was on soft side. This dish isn't available at most Chinese restaurants outside of a Chinatown so we were excited to try it. It wasn't bad. read more

What better place to indulge your appetite than a place that doesn't just have great food, they have great atmosphere, and a staff that makes you want to come back. I don't live in the area, but I frequent Wheeling. I discovered this little gem my first day on our recent trip, and I went back the next day, and I plan on going back before I leave. I ordered take out on both occasions but if the reception I got is any indication of table service I am going to have to make the trip from pittsburgh just to eat there. The owner greeted me and I witnessed him greeting others when they walked in. He is pleasant and charming. The manager behind the bar, is very friendly and, oh boy, is he efficient. I got a chance to engage in conversation with a waiter there. He must have attended the Golden chopsticks school of table side manner. What an nice guy with a great smile. Now for the food. It's amazing. They have the best egg rolls and duck sauce is ever had. The dumplings are moist yet crispy, the lo mien is loaded and perfect and the chow fun... oh my! It's to die for. Phone order for pickup was easily placed, staff on the other end of the phone was able to decipher what I was asking for. Good portions that was well packaged in plastic takeout containers. Order was spot on without error. If picking up at the restaurant, the parking across the street is actually only for the apartment residents. Didn't see the sign but was informed by the residents. Having been coming to this restaurant for over ten years it is sad to see that once it sold the quality of the food and staff has gone down hill so rapidly. We used to book family parties there with 4 times a year 20+ people and separately once a week now we all go elsewhere and even for lunch our office now longer orders the food. Last two times I tried items were missing and one of the time the food actually smelled spoiled. Sushi was warm and fishy as an avid sushi eater this is unacceptable. Martin was always present when he owned it and now your lucky if the new owner is there all the old staff has gone and you can tell. read more

This may be a good example of a Hidden Gem. The exterior doesn't give away much, it looks like a simple take out joint. Even going up to the front door and the secondary door inside I was fearful that we were entering a law office or some other such storefront business. Once inside it was a very nice well-appointed establishment with additional seating on the second floor. They had an interesting selection of specials when we were there and a variety of options good for vegetarians. Service was friendly and attentive. Our only complaint would be that the fried rice seemed to contain bits of meat despite it not being directly requested; if it needs to be vegetarian just asked for the vegetable fried rice. The owners look like twins and are super friendly and on a first name basis with most everyone. I started with one of the best egg rolls I have ever had. Crispy, tasty and just perfect. Egg Drop Soup - hands down the best Egg Drop I have ever had...... On to the dish, Mongolian Beef and it was excellent. The beef was crispy and served in a dark brown sauce. I ordered extra spicy. Very good. From what I heard, they grow their own spices. My only gripe was the crab ragoons, nothing special at all. Sitting in the midst of a neighborhood in what looks like a small industrial building his place is a gem. It was recommended by a local contact and that's why I went. Otherwise I would have passed on this place just based on looks. What a mistake that would have been. This little place makes its own sources including a spicy homemade sauce sauce. The owner said they actually grow the peppers themselves. I had the Szechuan beef which was tinder, flavorful and perfectly heated with probably their own papers. The egg roll may have been just your run-of-the-mill eggrolls. However the source kicked it up a notch. This place could use some updating and new carpet as far as Decour. On our way home to Pittsburgh, I decided to take a break from the usual long car ride options of McDonald's and Subway. I looked for Asian food options off the highway and found Golden Chopsticks on Yelp. This place is a bit odd. I can't put my finger on it - but it's just odd. The entryway is cluttered and dirty. Stuff I didn't notice until my way out of the restaurant. But tablecloths and junk stacked up in the middle of the entryway is not inviting. It's like they ran out of storage in this ENORMOUS restaurant! At first, we were seated in a booth next to a door that is ominously marked "VIDEO GAMING ROOM - MUST BE 21 TO ENTER." There is cigarette smoke wafting through the door and got worse everytime someone left or entered. We moved to a side room with tables to get away from the smoke for my kids. Service was attentive enough - but just awkward. Our waiter was pleasant but just disconnected from service. We just wanted to get back on the road and ordered 3 things: - Moo Shu Pork - standard fare. Pancakes were a little stale and they kept falling apart. Plenty of pork. Good plum sauce. - Moo Shu Vegetables - same filling sans pork. - Fried Dumplings Everything tasted just fine and the value was OK. Lacking atmosphere and personality and a deep clean. Golden Chopsticks is a hidden restaurant on Wheeling Island. It is an amazing Chinese place that I absolutely looooove!! Their Sweet and Sour chicken and vegetable fried rice is a must for me! While I would not recommend this to a person visiting Wheeling, because there are other restaurants more unique to Wheeling, I would recommend this to anyone in the Wheeling area for takeout when you don't want to cook! read more

We stopped here after a long day of snowboarding (or attempting to) at Oglebay Park. We were seated quickly and received water and complimentary hot tea. Our server answered our questions and made helpful recommendations. We had the egg drop and wonton soups and crab cheese wontons as appetizers. For meals, we had black pepper chicken, Kung Pao chicken ("it was delicious"), and the seafood delight ("delightful, but a bit spicy"). I haven't had much of a craving for Chinese in many months, but that changed when I visited home recently. A friend and I decided to try the Golden Chopsticks after not having been there in a decade, and it's still as good -- even better -- than we remembered. We started off with the vegetable dumplings. The six dumplings came in a steel steam pot and were packed with veggies. I didn't care for the sauce that was served with them, so I just used my old standby, the orange sauce already on the table. Even without sauce, though, the dumplings were tasty. Next, we had spring rolls. My friend had a regular one, while I had the vegetarian version. Again, these were stuffed and had a perfect crust -- flaky and fried without being break-your-teeth hard. I used my orange sauce again, while my friend used the accompanying sauce. I have to say, I was so very pleased with the vegetarian entrees available at Golden Chopsticks. I don't remember the restaurant having quite that many in the 90s, but I certainly appreciate it now! The variety available was good -- string beans, mixed vegetables, broccoli, etc., all in a variety of sauces and stir fries (and with rice or as noodles). I opted for the dish of mushrooms, which wasn't billed as being spicy. I asked our server if the kitchen could use the hot garlic sauce available for some of the other dishes, and he was happy to request it. My huge plate of mushrooms came back with a delicious sauce that had some serious kick. My friend ordered General Tso's, and he was very pleased with it. Both of our entrees came with plenty of steamed rice and, eventually, fortune cookies. Golden Chopsticks is smokefree and is a "white tablecloth" environment. Well, it has white tablecloths and certainly is a very nice restaurant, especially for Wheeling, but it's not snooty about it. You don't have to wear a tie or skirt or whatever. The entire staff is really friendly and quick. Our water glasses were filled often, and our server was helpful and personable. I know I'll visit Golden Chopsticks again during my next visit to the family. read more

Golden Chopsticks is a great Chinese restaurant for the Wheeling area and in general. I give them 4 and a half stars to 5 stars overall. As a vegetarian, Golden Chopsticks is wonderful to visit because they are very accommodating. A separate vegetarian menu is available upon request and the servers are incredibly professional, knowledgeable about their food, and responsive. Items can also be requested that are not on the menu. A good friend of mine whom I catch lunch with now and again knows the owner well and he usually asks what vegetable has come in that is best and we get a meal made around that, adding the protein and sauce of choice. Concerning the food, I find that meals are consistently good, prepared the same way, fresh, and delicious. If there is one item that no one should miss, it would be the appetizer of scallion pancakes. Their menu has a considerable amount of options and they have fairly priced lunch specials include a choice of appetizer items. Hot tea comes free at lunch and dinner. On site they also have a bar and a gaming room with slot machines if that is your cup of tea. For those non-vegetarians, I have taken parents and many non-veg friends to Golden Chopsticks which have resulted in happy compliments. Additionally, I had my wedding rehearsal dinner at Golden Chopsticks which went off splendidly. I started communicating with the owner a month in advance for reservations and planning and he and his staff were very nice, helpful, and accommodating to the dietary needs of our various family members and friends.
