We have been in the imperial valley for a few years now. Have tried many Chinese places that ranged from okay to barely edible. We had heard about Golden Dragon but it is a bit of a drive for us. But what the heck. Let's go for a ride give it a try. In 2 separate visits we tried a variety of items. Started with egg rolls, egg drop soup and their simple fried noodles. Egg rolls were crispy and hot seasoned great. The soup served was a nice generous portion. Broth was good. Could have used a bit more seasoning and maybe a sprinkling of green onions. But very good nonetheless. Entrees started with sweet and sour orange chicken. This chicken was breaded perfectly. Nice and lightly crunchy without being hard. The sauce was nice and orangey. Next time will try the spicy version. Chicken chop suey looked very basic but the plate was piled high. Lots of bean sprouts, cauliflower, carrots, that were very fresh and tasty. A little more chicken would have been nice. On a subsequent visit we had the pan fried chicken with the vegetable chop suey. Can't stress enough just how fresh everything was. Huge portions and great taste. Iced teas and adult beverages rounded out our meals. Fat, dumb and happy! Pricing was reasonable. Could have been more generous with the proteins but the portions were huge. Service was good. A bit of a language challenge but we managed to charade our way thru. Spanish language speakers will have no problem. And the place was very neat and clean with well maintained restrooms. Will definitely be back! read more

This Chinese restaurant is for me an unexpected treat. I found myself in Calexico on a quick trip and stopped in here for lunch. The walnut shrimp are a fine entree, it is a yummy dish that is quite large, I did take some home. I also had a side of appetizer dumplings. They were OK, but I think my wife makes better ones. The garlic vinegar sauce would improve these. Service was good and I was in fairly early and the jasmine tea was good. Today was probably the hottest day I have EVER had hot tea. I think it was 115 when I left. I will eat here again, this food is good. read more

I moved away from Calexico 30 years ago. I always missed the Imperial Valley/Mexicali chinese food. It leans towards Cantonese, but it's influenced by the area. Golden Dragon when it opened was one of many great chinese food restaurants in Calexico. It lost its way once the original owner passed away and had some dismal years, BUT I'm glad to say the flavor is back. The new owners are true to Mexicali/Imperial Valley Chinese food flavor! I loved it, and it brought back great memories! It's the last Chinese food restaurant in Calexico and it doesn't disappoint! Everything was good today!!!! Thanks Golden Dragon!!! We are from San Diego, where there are a lot of Chinese restaurants, and we felt it was equal to or better than any place we have been to. While in Calexico for work I decided to go to golden dragon for dinner. There was only one other person inside when I first arrived but folks started coming in after awhile, there were several takeout orders placed though. Service was quick and the server was friendly. I ordered the ginger beef, picked up my book to read for awhile and before I knew it the food was ready, only a couple of pages later. It came out piping hot, with white rice and was the perfect portion size. The meal was great, the only reason for taking off a star is because while I love ginger, some bites were just a bit too much. The ginger didn't seem to be cooked into the meal, but more so just fresh slices sprinkled in and when you get a big slice it can be a kicker. I came here on a road trip. My daughter was hungry! We decided to venture out past Viejas. We were in El Centro. I didn't realize how close we were to the Mexican border. Anyway, we were greeted Hello by a nice lady. We sat at the corner table. I got a Diet Coke to drink. I got the lunch special E which included fried rice, noodles and beef broccoli. Every thing was tasty. It reminded me of a Chinese restaurant in the South Bay. I definitely enjoyed the noodles and fried rice. Plenty of seating inside and the restaurant was clean. The lady serving us was very nice and refilled our drinks right away. The restroom was clean which was nice. That shows they keep their restaurant clean. It wasn't too busy. Parking can get full. I managed to find a stall at the end. I would definitely come back to try other items. read more

Was craving some Chinese food after a long drive. Found this place in Yelp. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was very delicious and tasty. I ordered the lunch special A and it came with BBQ Pork Fried Rice, BBQ Pork, Fried Chicken and a Egg Roll. The chicken was cooked perfectly with a crunchy skin. We found Golden Dragon by the full parking lot on the main drag of Calexico. After reading up on the history of chinese immigration to Mexicali and the foods that settled with them, we just had to try one of the many Chinese restaurants that dot the area. Great old time Chinese restaurant. Their 4.50 lunch specials can't be beat. Lunch includes a light soup then a plate full of fried rice, 2 entrees and a fried pepper. Nice to see the pepper included as a cultural part of the Mexicali heritage. Our diet cokes were accompanied by a large plate of lime slices. Our lunches were served piping hot as each dish was made to order. One downside was that our food was not served together. The service was great though. This is clearly where the locals " in the know" go for a great lunch deal. read more

Food was not good. Im 99.9% sure they add water to the table soy sauce.... no idea why they would but it wasnt salty at all... Im used to really good chinese food... seems as if the valley can only do nexican. Im going to give up on chinese food in the valley. The staff was very nice and gave great service. The food was very bland. The spicey mustard on the table was very good... we had the sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls, pork fried rice, veggie fried rice and sweet and sour pork. Chinese food in calexico. Heard about it over mexicali. Had to try it. Got the lunch special A. And dang it was all good. The chicken chop suey was awesome bean sprouts and chicken. So good. The fried rice was not oily tasted awesome. The chicken was killer especially when dipped in the vinegar stuff they bring out for you. And the bbq pork was moist which is rare it seems. If i could give zero to this restaurant i would for the staff not the food. Today i called for an order for delivery. I ordered combo 2 and a shark fin soup. The person on the phone took my order and even repeated it. When the delivery arrived they didnt have my soup. I called and the owner answered and she said they were going to send it. Then the lady who took the order called me back to say that i didnt order the shark fin soup that i maybe thought i had. She said that i wanted to get her fired and was hella rude. Really good place to get a quick, cheap meal. HUGE plate of food for under $6! I went with a friend who had never seen a Chinese person speak fluent spanish. I drove to Calexico from San Diego just to get Chinese food and I'm sure glad I found this place. If you want a laugh, read through the menu and see how many spelling mistakes you can find.
