Food looked and tasted like it was old. We usually eat there and no issues, very rare but today for the crap that we got it was not worth it. Rice looked like refried more than once, fish was also not fresh, looked like it was refried twice ...beef and broccoli had no flavor like it was washed and remade with no flavor. A party of ten of us ordered a gang of food - seafood soup, egg rolls, Mongolian beef, fried rice, chow mein, shrimp with vegetables, chicken with peanuts, fried fish, and white rice - all were good, nothing was greasy, and all served efficiently and quickly. We have been wanting to try Fortune House since Victor recommended it. We need Chinese at least a couple times a month or more but have no restaurant that is 'our place' yet. We hope this will be the winner! We followed the GPS to find the restaurant but still had to call to locate it. It is next to Quest Diagnostics at the end of the sidewalk but the sign is covered by trees so it's a bit tricky to see. We did find it and they have plenty of parking. We went in and were surprised to find such a large restaurant. We were greeted and could chose our seat. Our server took drink order and brought water. Hubs ordered a Tsing Tao but they were out (wah, wah) so had a Corona. The menu is quite large. They have lunch specials, Personal Combos and Family Dinners plus appetizers, soups and the regular dinner entrees. My husband selected a Personal Combo #1 with bbq pork, pork fried rice, chicken chow mein and sweet & sour chicken. I chose the chicken chop suey that comes with white rice. We also got a medium wonton soup. The soup came out. The broth was good with a delicate flavor. The wontons were very large and the veggies perfectly cooked. We were surprised though it didn't have any meat. Guess you have to get the Special Wonton for that. It was delicious anyway. The entrees were also large. My husband's combo had all the selections on the combo piled on one plate. My chop suey also came in a large pile on a platter. It was a ton of food. My husband liked everything but the chow mein. The fried rice was very good with a flavor somehow like onion rings (?). The sweet and sour chicken was not the usual horrible red sauce-it had a good flavor and the chicken was tender inside and a nice coating outside. The bbq pork was good too. The chow mein though was orange and had no veggies with just an ok flavor. He would chose chop suey next time with his combo instead. The chicken chop suey was almost all bean sprouts. I love lots of bean sprouts but there was only a little chicken and nothing else-no veggies or anything. It had a real good flavor though. I would order it again. We had enough leftover for at least one dinner and probably a lunch too. We will go to Fortune House again and try more new things. This was my second time here with my family. I have to say that this second time around, was way better! We come here because my parents truly enjoy this place. My parents, especially my dad is a food expert and with him being a cook, he could be a snob when it comes to critiquing Chinese food (which is a good thing, actually!) The food was delicious. We ordered a side of rice and four dishes: Mongolian Beef, Crispy Fish with Asparagus & Garlic, Choy Sum (a leafy vegetable commonly used in Chinese cuisine), and Beef Chow Fun. They were all delicious and tasted authentic. Here's the thing... there is traditional and Americanized Chinese food. Traditional is always BETTER! Americanized... ehhhh 50/50.... you pick your battle and price. I'm sorry if you think orange chicken is Traditional/Authentic... wrong! AAAAAAnnnyway... Our drinks were refilled when needed. I saw three firemen when I walked in. Usually you can follow firemen or policemen to places that are good and cheap! However, the fortune for Fortune House reads: You are stuck in mediocrity. Ouch! Funny, I got an empty (as in no fortune) fortune cookie this day to boot LOL!!!! We had fish, chop suey, barbecued pork, fried rice and sweet and sour chicken. The food came out quickly and it was at a nice temperature. The price was right. We paid about $36 or so for a ton of food. Three of us were at the table and a lot was left over. Everything was just OK. Nothing was bad. If you have read my other reviews you might notice that I do not really like three star joints. This place follows that rule. I will never return, but if you eat here you won't be disgusted either. Service was also OK. What can I do without at Fortune House? Mediocrity. I will not ever return. The owner is rude and doesn't believe in treating customers good, the way a customer should always be treated. She had a nasty attitude and was cussing in front of all the customers. Ordered from this place for the first time. Upon calling to order, there was no answer...twice. My husband ordered orange chicken that cost $13 and it tasted like complete utter crap. First of all: So much food! My husband and I both ordered a personal combo plate. We could have shared one, and likely still had leftovers. We also ordered potstickers and egg roll appetizers, so we took three boxes of food home. The egg rolls were crispy, not greasy, and the pot stickers were delicious. We especially enjoyed the sauce, which had a nice bit of heat. My favorite was the BBQ pork... fork tender and not too sweet. His favorite was the Mongolian beef. when i make my travels to el centro for work sometimes... its almost a guarantee that im making a stop here at the Fortune House. for lunch - specials with heaping portions of their House fried rice (char siu pork, veggies and egg) with your choice from thier menu - i love their beef with broccili, salt and pepper chicken (tenders not wings), mongolian beef, and kung pao. i heard their chow mein is good too as well as thier myriad of soups. get the ice tea too, as you'll get a pitcher of it and a small bowl of quartered lemon slices. i thought it was strange that some of the best chinese "fast" food is in el centro, a bordertown neighboring mexicali - but as i was told - some of the best chinese immigrants came thru mexico to eventually cross and settle in the US - its all good to me, as the Fortune House is spot on and one of my top 10 chinese restaurants EVER. come early for lunch - as it's wildly BUSY- service is awesome, lunch specials are under $7, its air conditioned well, and there is plenty of tables for large groups. read more

Took my food home, please don't buy their food! I ordered the sweet and sour chicken. They don't mix the sauce and the ingredients. The chicken comes (to go) in a styrofoam box and does not get mixed with the sauce on the wok....big no no, seriously. sauce, doesn't taste good...it tastes like sweet and sour, but....seriously. Just brought dinner home tonight and it was very good. Nice, clean, large venue with 20-25 tables and booths. Tucked away on the far right corner of the parking lot behind Rite Aid Pharmacy and Starbucks. Trees kind of obstruct the sign. Ordered Fish with black bean sauce, soft tofu and steamed vegetables, Hong Kong style noodles with mixed meat and vegetables. Requested for low sodium, low oil, and steamed vegetables. Everything was prepared as ordered with the exception of the fish being battered fried rather than stir-fried as I had initially thought. Delicious either way. Was going for a lighter dinner having spent the last two days in El Centro and the restaurants tend to cater to a saltier, bolder, richer in fat palate. Noodles weren't exactly the Cantonese style egg noodles. These seemed to be a bit more chewy in texture. Otherwise, the food was just right per request. Big portions, fresh steamed vegetables with silky soft tofu, sauces for the noodles were packaged separately to keep things from getting overly soggy and the fish were right on target. All for $31 which included 3 small boxes of white rice. Not too salty or greasy. Really satisfied with my first takeout dinner and will definitely make this place the go to restaurant when I'm in town. read more

Fortune House has become the go-to Chinese restaurant in the Valley. My family has come here since it opened a few years ago and we love it. The food is really fresh, and it's very convenient to call in your order and pick it up when you don't feel like cooking. My favorite dish is something that isn't on the menu, but ask for it anyways... Beef (or really, any meat) Chow Mein, Hong Kong-style. It's definitely a winner. My favorite restaurant for Chinese food in Imperial Valley. I have found out over the years you can order dishes that aren't on the menu. One dish I recommend is known as the IID Special, it's a blend of mixed vegetables and mixed meats...ask for it with black bean sauce and chili if desired. Atmosphere is great, prices are very reasonable with large portions and the service is attentive. It's rated one of the Top 100 Chinese Restaurants in the U.S. I'm so glad it's here in Imperial Valley. read more
