Renting our first home in Ann Arbor seemed like a good idea at the time. But leases end, and kids require stability. So buy a house we did. This was our first ever home purchase in Michigan. It's always interesting to see the regional variations of the home buying process state by state. I'm still not 100% how it all works, but I trusted our real estate agent to guide me through the process. That said, I've never fully understood what title companies really do. In Michigan, Title Companies seem to play the role that lawyers do in New York. Make sure all the i's are dotted. The t's are crossed. Facilitate these big transactions. Document the entire process. It was the seller of the house who chose Absolute Title. We were just along for the ride. And to extend the metaphor just a bit, in the age of COVID-19 we were treated to a Drive-In closing. Which means, periodically large stacks of papers were handed to my wife and me through the car window. We signed them, and traded the stack for a new mound of papers to sign. Once it was all done, we were homeowners. We drove down to the city clerk to file some important tax document. Weeks later, Absolute Title sent us a check because apparently there was a subsequent change to taxes in our favor. Woo hoo! All in all, this was about as painless an experience as one could have at the end of a significant financial transaction. And I did prefer signing all those papers in the peace, quiet, and relative privacy of our car, instead of around a meeting room table with all parties watching the process.

She tried to justify the delay by saying they need to wait a month "to be sure our check had cleared". In this day and age, that is obviously ludicrous, certainly unethical, and maybe illegal. Also, the professionalism to take off for another day and have the family suffer a while longer, because the small commission they receive is not enough for them to file the paperwork in a reasonable amount of time.

Every time I go in to deliver some information that I've had to get for them, two women are just working around. They could not honor my request to close earlier than scheduled that was made two weeks before. My mother needed a second surgery that they knew about. Closing will take place the day after her surgery. So now, we have a mess. If my frail 90 year old mother does not make it through surgery, all goes to probate including the house the buyers are buying. What do I have to do? I have to rent to the buyers until the probate process is through. If they could have worked a bit faster, I would be a happy camper. We could have closed. Now, I have a lot or what ifs.......They don't even have their name on this site. Find another title company unless you want to do the work for them and wait forever to close.

Call someone else I…read morehad no choice but to use First American title. After the seller signed the documentation inwas contacted by Emily, who pressed to know when I would be transfering funds. There had been some issues withthe settlement as to when it was going to happen. I had very little notice because the dat changed several times. When called to ask for assistance with the financial transfer, they were not helpful with instructions. I followed the instructions and contacted the bank. The bank was missing the information or instructions needed for the transfer. So I was given incomplete information from First American. After I did everything with my financial institution and it was in their hands. They followed up with First American to confirm information for the transfer of funds. It was in the works. A few hours later I received another call from Emily asking why the transfer hasn't arrived yet and pressed me to call my bank again. When I did, they said everything was going fine and it would be happening very soon. I don't know why she didn't contact the financial institution since they contacted First American to confirm the transfer. There is no customer care or support here. More like a loan shark.
