I am here on business. In two days the second day in here. If I lived here I would be in deep dark trouble. This is absolutely delicious ice cream. Now I have had Perry's ice cream before, but there were about ten flavors tops. I've never seen most of these. Toasted coconut is just like that coconut haystacks candy. The coconut is chocolate covered crunchy bits. Amazing. White lightning is dark dark chocolate with mint. Queen of Hearts is dark chocolate with raspberry and dark truffles chocolates. Then there was this deep coffee with chocolate. Bittersweet symphony. Sublimely delicious. They also make real cheeseburgers, thick steak fries. All fresh. Hot dogs, sweet potato fries, homemade Mac salad, potato salad mozzarella sticks. A lady was making a real ice cream cake with the flavors there. I wish I had a place like this by me but as I said I would be in trouble because I should not be eating ice cream. This is a real roadside shop we all used to see all the time. Golden Guernsey is the best ice cream spot in the area. Their soft serve options change weekly, and are always exciting. The black raspberry is to die for! Friendly staff members, and the line moves nice and quick, do not be discouraged by a long line on the sunny days. Decent sized parking lot. There are long benches along the side of the shop, and more seating in the back. Good establishment to bring your dog to, and they have doggie scoops with a treat (vanilla cream). This spot is always my go to when I'm craving something sweet, prefer this over Stewarts any day. I have also heard the food is very good, never tried myself. read more

This one is the one that offers a really tasty vegan option, usually two flavors that are either almond milk based or coconut milk based. So if that matters to you, this is where you want to go. Just went to Golden Guernsey last month. I had been out of central New York for 10 years, but I grew up in Oneonta. I was worried taking my husband and kids here, that it wouldn't be as I remembered it. It was exactly how I remember it from childhood though. Which was beautifully nostalgic and an amazing thing to share with my family. I ordered a cheese burger and fries(as did my mom), my husband got their lobster roll, and my son got their chicken strips basket which comes with mozzarella sticks also. The burger was as I had remembered, simple, juicy, good. The chicken strips were tender and juicy while still very crispy on the outside, great flavor. Mozzarella sticks were crispy and delicious as well the batter they use is amazing. For dessert my mom got a coffee shake, my husband had a strawberry shake, son had the soft serve swirl, and I had a chocolate dipped coffee ice cream. Everything was very great, and the prices aren't bad at all. 4 meals, and 4 desserts, for somewhere around $40. The only thing we wished was different was the marketing of the lobster roll. My husband said it tasted artificial, not like actual lobster, but imitation. It was still yummy, just wish it had been more clearly labeled. Over all it's always worth it to stop in for some lunch or dessert. Aside from the yummy food, there is a really nice area in back with tables and even space for kiddos to run. Not to mention the merry-go-round that's been there since I can remember (and still functions!!). All the employees were wearing masks and required them to order. No indoor seating when we went, but the picnic tables are lovely, especially on a nice warm day, so there's still an option to sit and enjoy your food. As far as service, they were slammed with orders and had a line when we went, but still managed to put out everything in a very reasonable time frame. Also, my son (4 years old) dropped his ice cream cone, so I went to buy him another, and the woman actually gave him a free replacement cone, even when I offered to pay. Very sweet. Definitely a gem. The Golden Guernsey is a very cute country style ice cream parlor. It has great lunch specials, and à la cart menu. The portions are more than generous and I've never had a bad meal there. Their soft serve ice cream is very smooth and flavorful. Within the last few years they have introduced, my favorite, maple custard. It is a clean, wholesome family store. It was perfectly creamy and sweet (not excessively sweet), and the cone complemented the flavors well. I know frozen dairy deliciousness. From Kohr Bros down the shore to Ted Drewes in the Gateway to the West. That's easily 1000 mi of ice cream stands. This place is what you hope to find. Intense rich flavors. Creamy smooth texture. Variety. Warning: NOT Tree Nut friendly. If you have a nut allergy you should not risk your life. Many of the reviews given are high. That's because 1. Only eat at places worth eating at. 2. Yelp allows you to be bullied by people you give 1 or 2 stars. They bully you into withdrawing your review. So can't give less than 3 without harassment. So a 3 is either meh of a 1-2 and the review tells u all. A 5 is a 5. If it's not deserving it doesn't get 5. 5 is not to be thrown around lightly. It's for the special. 5. Five. 5. Five. 5 Oh, and another instance of Yelp getting the hours wrong. Bad for business. Bad for Yelp. I feel like I can't rely on this in Yelp anymore. Is it COVID? Is Yelp not keeping up? So call if it's close to closing per Yelp. Yelp was 2 hours off (close at 8 instead of 10). That's potentially a lot of lost business. read more

Of all the ice cream joints in the Oneonta area, this is by far my favorite. For nearly a decade, I was thrilled to be able to visit this place 2-3x/week, all summer long. The ice cream they serve is infinitely better than anything I have been able to find in my adopted hometown of Hollywood, CA. Their service has always been excellent, friendly, attentive, and most importantly, patient. It's difficult to choose a flavor at the best of times, and I have so many favorites I always stammer my order. Bittersweet Sinphony; Panda Paws; Birthday Cake; Grasshopper Pie; I haven't seen a better selection of GOOD flavors anywhere else. The prices are unbelievably low (I live in LA and grew up in NYC): $2 for a "small" cone, which equals about a full 8-oz. cup of Perry's Ice Cream. That's less than half the price of a comparable scoop in most cities, for ice cream that is made in-state near Buffalo, by a 100-yr-old company. (Support local business and local suppliers!) Their custom-made ice cream cakes are insanely huge, and are priced 40% cheaper than comparable cakes from, say, Coldstone Creamery and Carvel. My only minus is the cleanliness. There is only one medium size trash can inside, and the dining area floor does get a little sticky at the end of a long, hot summer night. Dar, the owner, has been gruffly friendly and incredibly generous through the years. I have brought hundreds of people through there for after-concert treats -- and she was happy to give our groups a discount every time. I miss Dar and her huge orange cat, Butters, who stalks the grounds and will be happy to get a lick of your cone. read more

The Golden Guernsey doesn't just serve ice cream! My son took me to lunch there yesterday. I ordered a cheese burger with lettuce, tomato and onion with mozzarella sticks. My son had a bacon cheeseburger with mozzarella sticks. We probably waited 10 minutes before our food came out. I was surprised to find out that it looked like my burger was fresh hand patted, which is getting harder and harder to find anymore. I was cooked perfectly well done, but still juicy. It was served on a nice Keizer roll. The mozzarella sticks is what really blew me away! They were huge! And they as well were cooked perfectly. They also gave us a good sized portion of maranara sauce to go with it. Oh back to the burger, it was 1/2 lbs! I had a hard time opening my mouth that wide! So if you are in the mood for ice cream, first try their delicious food, and save the ice cream for last! read more

Lots of attentive young people working here, and they are very courteous. All my friends like it here, but it's just that I don't like the goods. For the price, the Columbo frozen yogurt is unbelievably bland - you can just as well go to McDonald's for 1/2 the price. Their frozen custard? That might be an acquired taste. Very very rich and eggy? So rich it turned my tummy. Tasted way too much of strange animal fats (almost mayonnaisy yech) for this almost-vegan-except-for-soft-serve's taste. But the locals love it, and there's an awesome three-horse mini-carousel out front for the youngsters. read more

I don't know what the posters with the lower reviews are talking about. The Perry's ice cream the Guernsey serves is real, old-fashioned ice cream, not frou-frou California artisanal batches, which is perhaps where some of this dissatisfaction stems from. It's rich, creamy, fresh-tasting, with no freezer burn in my experience of going there regularly for eight years. I can't really speak for their soft serve, though there was for a while a rest stop further east on I-88 that served Perry's soft serve chocolate, and that was hands down the best soft serve I've ever had in my life. (Says the girl who grew up a 1/2 mile away from a good Carvel.) I've done a semi-scientific taste comparison of west coast ice cream to New England/New York State ice cream, and there's no comparison. In my opinion, there is no good ice cream anywhere in Southern California, at least not that I've discovered yet. (And yes, I've had Fosselman's and McConnell's on several occasions, and even CoolHaus.) However, you can't throw a stone in summertime without hitting a great cone in the Northeast, usually from some no-name little seasonal hut at the side a country road. It's the legacy of the dairy farming tradition. Good cows = good cream, and Central New York State, particularly Oneonta, is right in the heart of the country's best dairies. (Northern California may be a different story from Southern. I had some Bi-Rite ice cream in San Francisco and that was pretty darn good stuff. You can also get good ice cream in Seattle. But I digress.) So, if you want generous, traditional, CHEAP ice cream (Who is that person stating that the Guernsey charges premium prices?? Since when is a $2.50 cone premium??), this is a great place to go. Open late. Best flavors in my opinion are Bittersweet Sinphony (a decadent bestseller, better to get it earlier in the day before it goes) and Caramel Cup Craze. Go to the Fourth of July celebration across the street, watch some fireworks, then exit the park and get yourself a gigantic cone. Yum. read more

This summer was my first ever visit to Oneonta, and it being summer, I needed ice cream! The Golden Gurnsey caught my eye as soon as we pulled off the highway. This dairy stand was open on the later side (we got there just before 10PM) with many tempting flavors. I went with the mint chocolate chip and chocolate pretzel - a scoop of each - on a waffle cone.
