Chicken in brown stew (small)
Greg K.

Really good Caribbean spot. I enjoyed it very much. I was picking up an order at Joann and had always wanted to try this spot. Apparently it is a chain with a lot of locations but I was unfamiliar with them. I was expecting some kind of fried chicken with a name like Golden Krust, but no fried chicken here. I think the Golden Krust refers to the crust in their Jamaican patties. The server was super helpful and explained the menu for me. They have chicken, goat, and shrimp in curry, jerk, and brown stew. Also a variety of patties. They have several vegetarian options that also looked good. I went with the chicken in brown stew and got a small for about $10. Glad I got the small because it was a very generous portion size served with rice and beans, vegetables, cabbage, and a really nice stew like gravy. I believe this is one of their milder choices and it was still plenty spicy and flavorful. Nothing fancy here, just good home cooking from the islands. There are a couple small tables but I gather most orders are to go. When you walk in if you go to the right of the ordering stand you can see the food if you want to look at it before you order. I recommend it and look forward to visiting again

Oxtail
Malia Y.

So I've had the golden Krust Jamaican beef patties that they sell in the store. When you get them here for about double the price ($2 vs the $1), you can taste the golden flakiness of the outside with a little bit of extra crunch! My friend ordered the oxtail here with rice and peas, plantain and cabbage for me to try. The oxtail was great! Tender, fell off the bone rather easily. The rice and peas were flavorful. I'm not a big fan of cabbage but it wasn't terrible. The real letdown of this dish was the plantains. Very chewy and lacked flavor. The staff were really attentive asking if we had already ordered since a bunch of us were just sitting down and waiting for others to grab food. I'd come back to get the food again!

Jerk chicken

Customer service here is lacking. Order the jerk chicken meal and they didn't have rice and peas. Didn't have cabbage also. So they said they would give me extra plantains and it looks like the normal amount any restaurant would give.

Oxtail... Rice & Peas... Expensive... BUT... "WORTH IT!"

Combination Dinner with Curried Goat/Chicken. Dinner came with Peas N Rice, Plantains and a Cabbage salad. Yummy !!!

I am new to the area so I tried this restaurant for the first time last night. I had a combination dinner with curry chicken & curry goat. My dinner came with peas-n-rice, plantain and a cabbage salad. I also had a jerk chicken patty and bun/cheese. The staff was friendly and engaging. The food was well portioned, hot, fresh and TASTY ! I ate in and had planned to take some home. The food was so delicious that I ended up eating the whole thing ! I plan to go back (probably today) and would highly recommend this place. Parking is good. Seating is limited, open-style and not intimate; so not ideal for a first date or a large group. The food is awesome !

Fried King Fish
Claire A.

Went there tonight and paid $14+ for this dried up piece of King Fish. When I questioned why it was small and looked so dry they offered to put gravy on it and give me some oxtails. They gave me a small portion of oxtail and thank goodness I had that because I would have starved for dinner. The fish was so dry and not digestible at all. When I walked out, I looked back and the two servers were pointing and talking about me. Never going back there again.

They sell several flavors and I love them all. Before covid 19, you could try everything but not anymore. Man, I salivate now thinking about those sweetness, spiciness, lemongrassy, curry, five spice tastes. Dried fruits are ok but I am happy finding my childhood snacks here. Cash only.

I guess they are still in business because of the delicious Vietnamese beef jerky. The name of the store says it all. They sell beef, squid, chicken, and fish jerky and pickled plums/fruits. All delicious Vietnamese snack! Aside from that, they also sell plants, cross, Jesus statues, Buddha statues, Vietnamese/Chinese medicines, herbs, supplements, phone cards, etc. Sounds like heaven for Vietnamese people who live in areas where the Vietnamese population is small. We mainly came for the beef jerky and dried beef liver (for Vietnamese papaya salad) since Nashville doesn't have anything like that here... If you're Vietnamese or you're interested in Vietnamese beef jerky, don't forget to make a trip here! Just make sure you bring lots of cash because it is not cheap. 2013/#86

I had the steak and pastor tacos. They were filling and very tasty(two corn tortillas, onions, cilantro, and the meat) and come with two salsas that make for a very modest price tag of 1.49 per taco that is much more nutritious than Tex-Mex. I now cry a little thinking about all the more expensive, fat-filled "steak" tacos I've had at Taco Bell. I also had some tasty fried tilapia(be warned, whole fish!) and my friend, the burrito. If you're used to fountain drinks, you won't find them here. But they do have a very wide variety of Jarritos(sp?) fruit drinks and Coke. I personally recommend the non-alcoholic Sangria. Decor-wise, I read a blog that quoted an adage, the worse a place looks, the better the food. This is true here. The sit-down restaurant part is very small and both the inside and out look clean, but bare-bones; if you repainted your concrete basement 8 years ago and put a tv, some tables, and some chairs, it'd be identical. There are definitely nicer looking taquerias, but that said, the taste isn't as good. While one location had 20 cent cheaper tacos, they were smaller. These were much better prepared. Additionally, the kitchen looked very clean from what I saw. With pricing, you're looking at paying 5.99-7.99+ for dinner meals. If you're looking for cheaper, you can buy 3 tacos for 4.50 total and be filled. 1.50 for most if not all drinks. The exciting part, the service is good and quick. If you go during low-peak hours, you may be the only customer there briefly, they can take your order immediately. One note: I purposely spoke in rough conversational Spanish and they spoke Spanish back(instead of not letting me practice like some places do). That said, I don't know if all the servers speak English or not. Don't be worried though, the menus have both languages and your server will understand fine anything uncomplicated for sure. All in all, Rancho Alegre, while looks aren't impressive, has the best authentic Mexican food I've had in town(I'm on a quest to try them all!), it's value-for-dollar is really good, and I'm very appreciative of the friendly staff and willingness to speak Spanish with my poor attempts. If you're craving authentic Mexican food, give it a shot! *it might be a little hard to locate. Basically it's right across the street from the Churches and Little Caesars off Tennessee Street.
