I have had horrible back pain/issues for a good portion of my adult life. Sciatic nerve pain and what felt like a slipped disk. The worst pain I've ever felt. My body looks mangled when my back is out. My left hip is higher than the right and bulges out. When I sit up or stand up the pain is abrupt and my legs usually buckle and I fall. It's insane. This is a very long overdue review on Golden Monkey Healing. I believe I've been holding back, because it's already difficult to get an appointment with Matt. He's in demand! About 4 years ago, I was hobbling around with the worst case of plantars faciitis. I used to go to Equinox, and the amazing restorative yoga instructor Amber, referred me to see Matt. Her boyfriend was a patient and swore by him. I was a bit apprehensive because of the needles, but Matt communicated throughout the insertion of the needles. They were not painful at all. He put a infrared lamp on the affected area, and I napped away while he stepped out. A few days later, no more limping around. After that experience, I've been seeing Matt whenever I have physical ailments. I should've bought a package, because it's a great deal for follow up care. This time around, I came in to his new, tranquil location in Valley Village. Another big score for me--only minutes away from home. I have a bad case of carpal tunnel, it flares up every now and then. This week was the worst it's ever felt. This was my first experience with acupuncture and I am glad I went to Matt. He eased me into the whole thing. I really felt like he listened to what has been my issues (migraines, headaches, backaches). This time he treated me for an overall balance. Next time we concentrate on the back side. I laid face up (you are fully clothed) and he applied the needles in areas all over my body to "reset" me. It really wasn't that painful. He then left for what seemed like forever only because I didn't know how long it would be lol. He turns on soothing music so just prepared to be there for 30-40 mins? Try and relax and meditate or something. He also applied a peppermint balm to my face and it was so refreshing and soothing. He even gave me some to take home to apply when I get a headache. Another tip: don't move. Haha might seem obvious but remember those needles are placed strategically and in pressure points sometimes. Does not feel great to try and move. I definitely felt looser the next day but will keep trying with acupuncture to help long term. read more

I have to start by thanking Matt for his services. When I first began treatment my ankle was swollen and stiff. I had difficulty walking and had consistent pain. I had been to my primary care doctor and a specialist both of which told me that pain killers and anti inflammatory medicine was the only solution. I've been treated by acupuncturists and practitioners of Eastern medicine for many years, but Matt is the best that I've had the pleasure of meeting. I suffered a shoulder injury over a year ago that has since prohibited me from practicing my regular exercise regimine. 6 weeks of physical therapy at UCLA's medical center did nothing to improve it. It's shameful that I didn't consider going to see Matt earlier. Matt diagnosed the cause of my injury in the very first session, and cheerfully prescribed that he could sort me out. And sort me out he did. When he sunk the first needle into the problem area above my shoulder blade, I could instantly feel the long-tensed muscles rapidly unraveling like a ball of squirming coiled snakes. He even remarked on it. He expertly stretched out the problem area after the session, and sent me home with an herbal patch on it. The very next day I noticed an increased range of motion in my shoulder. I saw him once a week for the next 4 weeks, after which he told me he wanted me to try to slowly and carefully get back to my exercise regimen. This morning I performed the first and only set of pushups that I've done in over a year. With zero pain. I'm going to keep his advice in mind and proceed slowly, but I literally feel like I've been given a new lease on life. Dear Matt, I love you. ~ Christina Do I really need to go on? Well, no, you probably get the idea, but the truth is, I am long-winded and that's the one thing Matt's acupuncture probably can't help me with. My husband went to Matt a few weeks prior to me. I went to pick him up from the appointment and was met with a husband whose shoulders and neck were actually NOT tense. His face looked - shockingly relaxed. Running his own business for 9 years and being a generally high strung, nervous type have taken their toll on his ability to relax and it had been years - if ever - since I had seen him like that. When my husband suggested I go see Matt, I was...reluctant. I don't love the thought of needles being stuck in me...There's really nothing seriously wrong with me...I have a few aches and pains, but I'm almost 40, so that's normal...Sure I don't sleep well sometimes and am irritable, but I have a 4 and half year old, so what do you expect? And on and on went my list as to why I'm not really a candidate for acupuncture. I finally decided to just try it and I wouldn't really say I was skeptical, but I was just about positive there really wasn't anything Matt could do for me in particular. I walked in with my paperwork and my husband, who was there for his second session. Matt took me in and made very little small talk, which to me is virtue in any health care provider. I think he could tell I was tense, but kept the chit-chat to a minimum and just let the acupuncture speak for itself. He gave me a few pointers on nutrition after examining my tongue. (Matt you'll be happy to know I had a lamb burger that very night and bought a beautiful red bell pepper for my salads.) The procedure was quick. I did feel a few of the needles and even winced a time or two, but Matt did a good job of distracting me and it was the one time he small-talked (about his wife and children, which of course I could identify well with). He turned off the lights, left on some meditative music and I was on my own to let the magic happen. Yup...magic...because it was something like that. Within five minutes, I burst into tears. Aside from trying to wipe my eyes with a hand that had a needle sticking out of it, there was nothing stressful about the cry I was having. It was just good, cleansing cry. When he returned he worked the heck out of my wrists; the cracks resounded through the room. I walked out with a slight grogginess that grew as I sat on the sundeck waiting for my husband to finish up his session. I felt like I had napped. The feeling grew throughout the evening. After floating through school pick up, feeding, bathing, and tucking in my four year old, I lay down on my bed and within minutes was sleeping the sleep of college student having pulled consecutive all-nighters during finals. Two blissful hours I slept, after which I dragged myself to the shower where I think I dozed standing up. I went back to sleep a few hours later. The past few days have been amazingly peaceful. I've enjoyed a general sense of well-being in which a grumpy preschooler, mid-city traffic, and unfriendly people have failed to push my stress buttons. I've felt more energy and finished tasks I have wanted to finish...and even not finished tasks without feeling that sick and stressed out guilt about not finishing. The aches, stiffness, and pain in my wrists from typing and Blackberry use are almost gone. My achy hips even feel better. My only stress now is the occasional thought that this feeling might eventually dissipate. I'm already booked for session number 2. read more

Not that I'm an acupuncture slut, but I had been going to a different clinic for several months before I was introduced to Matt's site. After reading his Yelp reviews (which make him out to be borderline Jesus) I figured I'd give him a call. Results from the previous doc were growing stagnant. Matt's vibe, energy and general demeanor is chill, soothing and certainly exactly what you want when you're about to get stuck with needles and/or suction-cupped to death. I felt more comfortable there in five minutes than I did at my other clinic. (The doc there did a great job, by all means. But there's something about Golden Monkey that makes me feel more centered and settled.) During each visit, Matt and I talk about what's been going on lately to determine what points to focus on, and he's never afraid to try a different position or technique to see results faster. The needles hurt more, he puts them in deeper, and you meditate for a shorter period of time. Just being honest here...if it doesn't hurt, it's not working, and the practitioner isn't doing you any favors by being ginger.. Matt clearly is not in the business of half-assing it in order to keep you as a patient for longer. The herbs are more potent, hand poured and remarkably affordable, too. I trust him and I like him, and I've gotten even better results in a shorter period of time than I've seen with every other doctor I've been to. (That includes Ayurvedic, naturopathic and traditional doctors.) Matt's not Jesus though...I checked. read more

I hurt my neck while at the gym about 10 days ago. I literally could not move my neck more then two inches in any direction without being in excruciating pain. I immediately went to my doctor. He prescribed me some muscle relaxers and Advil that did nothing. It got so bad that I was unable to sleep. I went to countless massage therapist and even a Mexican Sabador. No one could do anything for the pain. I decided to try acupuncture, at this point I was willing to try anything. Made an appointment with Matt, thinking this isn't going to work. I was running late for my appointment so I called. Matt answered and told me not to worry just come in. As soon as I walked in the door, Matt greeted me and walked me back to the acupuncture room. I literally didn't have to wait one second. I recommend going to his website and filling out the patient info before you go in, it is so convenient. Matt asked me a few questions and then he assured me he could fix my neck. I looked at him with a stern glare and replied: "so your are telling me that you can fix this". I was sure he was full of shit just like every doctor and chiropractor I had been to in the past week. He chuckled and said; "yeah, I can fix the problem". Lets just say I am a true believer!!! 100% true believer!!! By the time he was done I could move my neck for the first time in ten days. Not only could I move it, nearly all of the pain was gone. If you are feeling stressed, tense.... Let me just say; you know how you go and pay some idiot at Massage envy that doesn't have a clue what they are doing. You go to get relief and leave frustrated. Matt, I love you!! You are the only grown man, asides from my father, that I have dedicated that comment to. Because of you, I am now able to function normally in my daily activities. I am just a typical person with a desperate search for a cure for my ailment. I've gone through several physicians, taken researched based, mostly google, products, seen several physical therapists over 2 years, and even performed youtube instructional exercises and stretches, spent $$$ on custom orthotics and comfortable shoes, but nothing has helped with my physical impairment. Before seeing Matt I had seen several different acupuncturists and chiropractors to no avail. I had invested a lot of money trying several alternative methods to heal my bulging disc that was crowding nerve roots and causing immense pain.
