What a tremendous experience! Everyone we've met through GSGA has been absolutely wonderful. As we (my family and I) went through the interview process we learned so much throughout it and because of that we felt truly prepared when adoption day arrived. We have felt supported by Stu and Barbara and welcomed into the GSGA community from day one. Yes there are multiple steps to the adoption process but each one is meant to help you understand exactly what your new dog will need and what will be required of you to meet those needs to ensure success for both you and your dog. And the best part? It works! The information is both informative and useful. The time Stuart and Barbara have taken to ensure success for their adopters and adoptees is a true testament to their love of the hounds and their earnest desire for both the hounds and the humans to live their best lives together. We have two children, a cat and a bossy chihuahua- -so it was pretty important, to our family, that we adopted from a rescue that was reputable and very thorough in their adoption process. We welcomed the home visits, enjoyed the phone interview and were thrilled, beyond words, when we met our boy for the first time. Danger, heartbreak ahead! Understand this review is not about the dogs. Greyhounds are awesome. This is about the GSGA organization. In my experience, this organization is passionate and zealous to a fault. I'd like to share my experience so that others may be saved the heartache. I took my whole family miles away and across a bridge to a meet-and-greet. We made the commitment because I wanted my son to see and interact with the greyhounds. I met with the hostess and we had a nice converstation. I was encouraged to fill out an adoption application. We did. Later, I spent an hour on the phone with the president, asking questions, seeking to understand more about the breed. I was/am just as concerned that the hound be a good fit for my family as GSGA. I learned a lot, and I felt great after the call, and we agreed I would adopt in late January because we have some travel planned. I was invited to the Facebook and Yahoo groups and started geting invites to dog walks and other events. Later I got a call regarding Dolly, a dog that was being fostered with a family that had children and cats. GSGA said the dog was a "slam dunk" because of the foster situation and asked if we could move our adoption date to 1/12/19, to make room for the new dogs at the foster residence. I stated my concerns about travel but we agreed; I hustled to get dog gates and a new bed, we sterilized and set up the crate, I showed pictures of the dog to my son and we started thinking about new names for her. We were all very excited! A dog that the president says is a "Slam Dunk?!" Another GSGA volunteer visited me after a long phone call in which she made judgemental remarks about my indoor/outdoor cats; not specifically as it relates to the dog, but judgemental towards me as their owner and the choices I make regarding their care. I felt that was inappropriate and I commented on it. During the home visit she confirmed the safety of the house and the caution/care we would need to take to secure the front door and garage door, as well as the routine we would implement to keep the cats safe. I felt even better about adopting. Then I scheduled a call with yet another volunteer. We had an orientation call booked for a Wednesday. That day I accidently left my laptop at home, meaning I couldn't finish my questionnaire so at the last minute I called to reschedule. I sincerely apologized, she kindly understood. We chatted for another 30 minutes or so regarding some of the questions I had. Later that night I completed the orientation questionnaire. I was feeling more confident after our call and completing the packet that I understood what I was getting into and the responsiblity I had for the dog. I sent an email that night to GSGA regarding a vaccine because the day care they recommend requires it. GSGA responded Thursday AM that I could get Dolly vaccinated on Sunday after adoption. I called and scheduled an appointment with our vet to get Dolly vaccinated, as well as called the dog camp to get a reservation. Later that afternoon I was heartbroken to hear that GSGA would not adopt a dog to me because "we're not a good fit." I was shocked! I probed for a more specific reason, the response was that my answers were "adversarial." I did comment aggressively while answering one I found unnecessary and overbearing. That comment led GSGA to believe that I would not take this breed seriously and that I would not reach out to the resources provided if I ran into trouble. GSGA disregarded all my actions/activity and questions/work and investments up until this point and deemed, based on my candid comment (I answered correctly by the way) that I "wasn't a good fit" because I didn't take greyhound ownership "seriously." GSGA believes the dogs are always theirs, not yours. The adoption contract states if you do not comply 100% with their dogma, you will not be allowed to adopt a dog and breach of their guidelines is cause for reposession. In the contract they reserve the right to visit your house, and if they find cause, take the dog back from you at any time "without notice." This organization is guided by true passion and concern for the animal, but it has turned into an over-zealous attempt to control every aspect of your relationship with the dog. Their passion ends, however, if anything goes wrong; they hold themselves harmless in the contract and all the liabilty is yours, while all the control is theirs. I share this not to disparage the organization, who is dedicated to the noble work of rescuing these dogs, but to help potential adopters understand that they may unintentionally play with your emotions and lead you on, and in the end the judgement call regarding whether or not to adopt to you is not necessarily fact-based but more subjective to their perception of you. I am responding specifically to the "Maikeru S." translation, Mike S.?, post. You say you have adopted from several greyhound rescue groups, but not that you have adopted from GSGA? If you have not, then all you mention is 2nd or 3rd hand? It that case, it appears that most of your dissatisfaction is with, home decor, personalities and this rescue group's beliefs and rules. Which if you did not adopt from them does not apply to you? I was curious one day and looked up greyhound breeders in Northern California. I found an IG breeder in the Gilroy area. I reviewed the purchase contract for their puppies. It was much more restrictive than the adoption contract that one agrees to when signing with GSGA. There is no requirement that says if you want to bring an ex-racing greyhound into your home that you have to utilize GSGA. The nagging question for me, is why you want to try to damage a rescue group that is managed purely through volunteerism, that has given a second life, regardless of color, age or what's been broken, to over 1700 greyhounds since what, 2002? Plus, being there to take back hounds that are returned with all the litany of bad behavior and habits, or as I like to think, now inconvenient and/or the thrill is gone. GSGA hosts many "meet & greets" throughout the bay area & Roseville, where people that are interested in adopting a greyhound are introduced to both the breed and GSGA policies, so anyone can make their own decision whether or not this rescue group is a good fit for them. The seemingly personal attacks puzzle me. We first adopted in 2005. We have adopted dogs aged from 18 months to 8 years 363 days, for a total of six houndies inhabiting our home and lives. In the last 12 years, I know of 3 smokers, have actually only seen one person smoke and never at a GSGA function. Other volunteers appear to me to be smokers, but unless I see them smoke or smell it on them, I have no information to make that call. Why does it even matter? I am 5'3", 63, female, non-smoker, have fostered around 15 houndies, currently am fostering a return, for all his return litany of "bads" I consider him as near perfect as possible. Recently, an 85+ lb. 22 month old male was available for adoption. I asked, if I would be considered....the answer was, "yes". However, as all things in life, timing is everything. At this point in time, my focus is on our 14+ year old male. He came to us in 2006, a bounced return at 3 years old. Not the right time for a new member of the household. I consider myself a 50% involved volunteer. Many people volunteering for GSGA are more involved, many less involved. Many of the adopters are only involved when they adopt and never thereafter. My application for adoption got rejected, but I am still giving the group 5 stars. They hold "Meet-and-Greets," which are not typical adoption events where you meet dogs for adoption, but instead meet volunteers with their own rescued Greyhounds. This was a great system to learn about the breed, and the rep we spoke to was friendly and honest about the breed's advantages AND disadvantages. Her dog, an older female Greyhound, was lovely and well-mannered. When we submitted our application, we received a prompt (2-3 day), courteous response explaining why our application was rejected (small pet concerns). I feel we were in knowledgeable and honest hands, and while I'm sorry the breed isn't right for us, I think this organization is the real deal. read more

A very discriminatory organization!!!!! And I do not mean this in a good way! My mother is hard of hearing and I am Deaf. We have three furkids between the two of us and are always seeking to expand the family. The three furkids are best buds in a very warm loving and fun household. My mother decided she would like to adopt a Greyhound and submitted the requisite paperwork to this organization. In the process of scheduling a home visit, Gary asked if there were any questions. I mentioned my concern about my three furkids because it is an active household . . .full of toys and walks etc. I also mentioned the fact that the website makes no reference homing a Greyhound with small dogs or cats or how to do that successfully. Rather than continue a dialogue about possible solutions to make this adoption a successful one for everyone involved, Gary decided to reject my mother's application under the guise of being concerned about our three furkids. Really. . his rejection is directly tied to my being Deaf and my mother hard of hearing. His belief is that because of such, the household is unsafe for everyone. I also had joined their Facebook page as a way to connect with the community of Greyhound families. I elected to post a similar posting as this one here. It was promptly removed by the group's leader. One guess as to who that must have been. So. .. folks with dis-abilities. . .don't bother with this organization! Below are his email and my response: I have given this potential adoption a lot of thought and have decided not to proceed with your adoption process with Golden State Greyhound Adoption. You have both expressed very legitimate concerns for your resident dogs and your cat. Based on my first hand experience of having had greyhounds, cats, and other dogs, including very small dogs for many years, I too share your concerns. In my personal case my greyhounds, other dogs, and the cats have lived together for the most part without incident. I never allow the greyhounds to get involved in play with the little dogs or the cats. As soon as I see my greyhounds are starting to get interested in what is going on around them I make sure they don't become participants in the play. Sometimes I am out of the room and I hear a commotion and proceed to the location to make sure all are safe. If I had a hearing impairment this would be very difficult to detect without observing the activity. As you know the greyhound coming to us from the track has never been exposed to the world we are familiar with. This dog has lived his life in a crate, not in the environment that other dogs live in from puppy hood. We cat test and small dog test our greyhounds in a controlled setting and determine if they are in fact cat and small dog safe. Having said that, that does not mean we want our adopters to just let their new greyhound mingle unsupervised with the resident dog or cat. I can't possibly predict what a greyhound would do, if for the first time he was in the room with other dogs playing with a bunch of toys. I do know that it is the owner's responsibility to assure the safety of all their domestic pets. I am making this decision in the best interest of your dogs and cat and also the greyhound. GSGA is an excellent adoption group, all the members really CARE about the dogs. A forever home for every dog that comes to the group is the goal. Many volunteers meet once a month at different pet stores in their areas to introduce people to this breed of dog and interest them in adoption. A dog isn't just dropped at the door step, there is an application, home visit, training for the new owners and follow-up by the group. There is a yahoo web site where owners can ask questions and receive responses back from other owners based upon their own experiences. If a family can no longer keep their dog, for whatever reason, the group wants this dog back, it doesn't matter how long you've had the dog. Another home will be found for your dog. The adoption process was thorough and smooth, and all of our questions were answered in depth by the great GSGA staff. We could not be happier with our greyhound Sophie, and she would never have come into our lives had it not been for the wonderful people at GSGA. I adopted my first Greyhound from GSGA in 2005, six and a half years later and 3 more greyhounds, I am as happy today with the support I receive as I was with my first experience of GSGA at a meet and greet in Walnut Creek in 2005. Informative, knowledgeable, caring, compassionate, supportive....just a few words that come to mind when I think of the group we call GSGA. I not only enjoy that my dogs are supported with fun activities and a huge knowledge base I have enjoyed the incredible social contact with people that are as equally passionate about their canine family members. Greyhounds are still raced in several states and each track can have as many as a 1000 or so dog's so the need for adoptive homes still exists even though in California there is no Greyhound racing. We hate to be the lone voice in the crowd and be the first to give one star to GSGA but it must be shared that we had a traumatic experience with Shelley, the rep from GSGA that we had to work with. After completing our application, we had a long and pleasant conversation with Shelley and my wife and I went through, at length, our dog ownership history, description of our home/ourselves and why we wanted to save a greyhound from the track. The next step was going to a Meet and Greet where we spent more than an hour cuddling hounds, speaking with others who had adopted from GSGA and learning more about the organization, the breed, and the uniqueness of track hounds. We had a great time, everyone we met was very friendly and helpful and we met Shelley face-to-face, along with her Charlee and other hound. We left convinced this was the right group and dog type for us! We then reviewed the website and spoke with Barbara who suggested that Bobby was a good match for us. (Barbara, please note, was wonderful.) Next, Shelley did our home visit, bringing her 2 hounds with her to inspect our house and give the "paws up." This visit took 2 hours and we got our shopping list and discussed Bobby's impending adoption into our lives and hearts. Shelley's 2 hounds felt immediately comfortable with us and in our home as Shelley later noted that Charlee wanted to live with us and asked if we were open to adopting a second hound. Further emails and calls were exchanged and our adoption date was set. All seemed well, although we had to admit that Shelley was a challenge to communicate with from the start. Her style is aggressive, she interrupts and isn't a good listener; we answered the same questions over and over and Shelley's style tended to be condescending. We dealt with this as best we could as we were very committed to our decision to adopt Bobby and knew there were other folks in GSGA that we could communicate with. We excitedly bought everything on the list in preparation for Bobby's arrival. We learned that Bobby was marking in his foster home but we took this in stride as we knew there would be challenges and felt prepared, as we explained repeatedly to Shelley, to expect accidents inside the house. Then something strange happened. The afternoon before our adoption date, Shelley called and asked to speak only with my wife. A conversation ensued beginning with this question posed by Shelley: "have you ever owned a dog?" How odd! My wife was perplexed regarding the nature of this conversation and expressed her concerns to Shelley...what was this really all about? Eventually, it was sorted out and the conversation ended with a confirmation of the time and place the next day when we would pick up Bobby and have our orientation. Later that evening, my wife wrote Shelley an email, summing up our dog experience in writing, as a follow-up to the conversation, in the spirit of reconfirming how excited and prepared we were to bring Bobby home. The email was positive and benign. However, the next morning, we got an email from Shelley, announcing that we were suddenly not a good "fit" to their organization! We were shocked speechless! I anxiously called Shelley and Stu/Barbara and were unable to reach anyone. No explanation was offered for this sudden change of plans. Eventually, I spoke with Stu who suggested we continue the adoption process but by then we had concluded that we didn't want to deal with GSGA as we were so heartbroken about losing "our Bobby" and still don't know why there was a 180 degree turnaround regarding our suitability as parents. We do acknowledge that all other individuals associated with GSGA were great. So if you decide to work with this group to adopt a track greyhound, I strongly recommend not working with Shelley. One person should not play God with people's emotions, not to mention the lives of dogs desperately in need of their forever home. read more

Where do I begin, this is an incredible group of people who have an intense passion for saving greyhounds from the greyhound racing industry. Greyhounds are a wonderful breed and often misunderstood, GSGA assists all along the adoption process and into the life of the dog. They are a wealth of knowledge for any medical issue and often have great tips for any behavioral adjustments the dogs have as they transition from athlete to couch potato. I have adopted 8 dogs from them over almost 15 years. When I met them they said their mission statement was to support the dogs in successful transition into home life and they have far exceeded that statement. Like any breed, Greyhounds are not for all people, some breeds work better for some lifestyles, I know many people question the no off leash rules. But having lost many a match to a greyhound out pacing me to an open door, the off leash rule is in place for a reason and the backup security plan. A great deal of care and time and attention has gone into rescuing these dogs so it stands to reason the group is invested in seeing all of the dogs coming through their network lead loving, healthy, cared for lives. I have heard some people criticize their adoption standards being too strict, when in truth those critical people are really reacting to practical advice that isn't in line with what they want, this group always puts the best interest of the dog over the desires of the human - this is a hard concept for some in this impulse laden world. Maybe if we spent less time with instant gratification less cute puppies would end up older dogs in shelters being euthanized. Having worked with a few Bay area shelters, they all praise the work GSGA has done to help not only off track greyhounds but also greyhounds from outside the system. All 8 of my dogs have been and are the type of dog that can go anywhere and everyone feels they are a pleasure to be around - much of that credit goes to this group. Beyond the adoption process there is so much more to this group, offers of babysitting our greys, travel tips and locations that are dog friendly, tips on specific issues and tons of loving support for the day you have to say goodbye from people that understand that your dog meant the world to you. GSGA is rare in the sense that their mission is truly about rescuing one of the most wonderful breeds available. Many rescue groups claim "its all about the dogs", but is often anything but that. Stu and Barbara care deeply about their mission, and go way above and beyond to support the folks that have adopted through them. They have given me advice, helped with medical issues, emotional support, almost anything I could ask for. I can't say enough good things about them. They have seen far more than their share of people that shouldn't adopt a dog, as well as crazies, and all kinds of less than upstanding personalities.
