Underdog was incredible. The whole process, from start to finish, felt incredibly considerate and caring. In our case, we have two kids, and really wanted to make sure the dog was a good match before we introduced them. That model isn't a great fit for shelters where they (understandably) want the whole family to meet the dog, and won't place a hold to let grownups prescreen first. Not so with Underdog! We completed our initial form, had an email exchange, and then a video call, just grownups. There was no rush, and absolutely no pressure - such a wonderful difference from what we'd experienced elsewhere. Once we felt like this was a good fit, we included the kids. Our foster was incredible. She was responsive, caring, kind, and compassionate, and it totally opened our eyes to how this process can go when it is handled so skillfully. Moreover, she gave us a fabulous download of information, all super actionable and helpful. We came home with healthy, realistic expectations, and tons of tools and resources to get us started. Underdog helped me find my furry soulmate. I've had Joy for 3 years now, and I'm so glad that Underdog saved her from her situation. When I first adopted Joy I was very nervous, wondering if I'd be good parent to her. I adopted a dog through Underdog rescue this week! With so many people looking to adopt dogs and shelters being overloaded with applications and emails, I was ready to wait weeks to hear back that the dog I had my heart set on was adopted. I heard back a short 40 minutes after submitting my application! I had a phone call with Sam's foster mom and she agreed to let us come and meet him. We drove to meet Sam, and met them outside her house to be safe and separated. She wore a mask and we maintained a 6ft distance at all times, and we felt like proper precautions were being taken. We took Sam home shortly after, and have been helping him adjust to his new life! My family and I have been fostering with Underdog for just over a year and we cannot say enough GREAT things about them! We started off fostering puppies and quickly realized that older dogs fit best for my household of 3 other dogs and a very hands-on toddler. Amanda knows the dynamics of our house very well because she maintains great communication with us and so she knows what to look for when choosing a potential foster dog for us. Along the road, we've had a couple dogs show signs of naughty behavior and she has been right there to help guide us and/or put us in touch with an experienced trainer to help us get these shelter dogs ready for their new life. One of the things I love the most about fostering with Underdog is that they put a lot of trust on the fosters and allow us to communicate with potential adopters because, well, we know the dogs best. Meet and greets are setup on our schedule and I never feel micromanaged. We've fostered 11 dogs in a year and I have to give most of the credit to our success with placing the dogs to Amanda and her team. They're great at posting about the dogs, being very transparent about their behaviors and needs, and truly have the very best interest of the dog at heart. I think something don't realize about rescues is that they cannot save more animals from shelters without committed fosters. My hope is that this review will encourage the rescue to improve their customer service practices so other people aren't messed with in the future. If you are considering adopting from them, watch for these red flags and consider looking elsewhere. We applied for a dog. We knew it would be competitive. We were contacted because we were the top candidates. We were interviewed and were moved forward to a final meet and greet. The volunteer fostering the dog told us from the start she was considering foster failing the dog. However, her boyfriend didn't want to keep the dog so she was doing what she could to change his mind. She said, "I should probably follow our rules and only adopt to a family that has fully agreed to the decision." This should have been my biggest red flag. The foster continued to have us jump through hoops and said her boyfriend wasn't interested in keeping the dog. She sent us photos every day, asked us to send photos of random things about our place, and continued to lead us to believe we were moving forward with the process. She sent hundreds of messages at all hours to the point where it was overwhelming. She even asked us to keep in touch with the original owner and send the original owner pictures of the dog once we adopted him (another huge red flag). Two days before meeting the dog, she said she was really working to convince her boyfriend to keep the dog. The next day, I requested we cancel the meeting until she had made up her mind as I was exhausted of my emotions being toyed with. Finally, she texted me saying she was "foster failing" the dog. We were annoyed. But we accepted it. Given the foster gave us the run around I asked if she could give us priority for the next thing that comes up that meets our needs. In a plethora of texts she insinuated that I was acting like an entitled person but she agreed to work with us to see if we could find something that works out. I didn't expect anything and I was done at that point. I should have ended it there. Two days later, the foster texts me and says she has something that meets our needs. She again sends me a hundred texts and has two dogs transported from Tulare. We were looking forward to a Pomeranian or spitz style dog. One dog was a Pomeranian, the other was a mix. The mix was cute, but not exactly what we were looking for. We were open to either though because they were both cute dogs based on initial photos. Today, we had the meetup and it was a mess. I could tell from the texts she was sending me that she wanted us to adopt the mixed dog. I still entertained the idea but I told her based on the most recent photos, we were more interested in the pom. We drove 75 miles from our house to the meetup location. She first had us meeting at a dog park so our dog could socialize with them. Last minute she switched the location to her apartment complex (red flags continuing). When we get there, she didn't seem happy we were there and within 30 seconds of meeting she said "as you continue your search for the right dog...." (She had already made up her mind before we arrived). Our dog and the Pom were aloof of each other. They didn't hate each other but they didn't immediately become best friends (not unusual). She repeated herself "as you continue your search" 3 or 4 times. After about 10 minutes, my husband said, "we need a little time to talk about it and we'll call you this evening. The foster said, "we don't hold dogs and we won't be moving forward to adopt with you." Then she said, "we won't be able to find a dog that meets your needs to you'll need to continue your search elsewhere." Not only was she not considering this adoption, she also told us she wanted nothing to do with us anymore. I confront her on making us drive so far when she knew in advance that she wouldn't adopt the dog to us. She denied it and tried to turn it around on us. But I pointed out that she immediately started making the "as you continue your search" comments as soon as we arrived. She also made it clear she was upset we weren't considering the other dog when I had explicitly told her that morning and all along we were leaning towards the Pomeranian. We then called her out about how wishy washy she's been the entire time and how she manipulated us with the first dog and shouldn't have trusted her after that. In the end she told us, "Go fuck yourselves." We spoke to the President of Underdog. She explained that she had planned on having the first dog be foster failed. (Why would she post the dog?) She Implied we were acting entitled. I explained to her we didn't feel entitled to the dogs. We just didn't like being led on, manipulated, and driving for over an hour for the meetup when the foster had already made up her mind. She continued to pretend to listen. Finally we just further clarified we were upset mostly about being manipulated and that we just want her to keep an eye our for the behavior from the foster in the future. read more

This was our first time rescuing a dog and it was the best experience possible! Amanda is very knowledge on breeds, training and nutrition. She is always there if you have questions or concerns! She has a great group of fosters and they all do what is on the best interest of the dog. In my opinion, Underdog Animal Rescue is an amazing organization that deeply cares for and about its animals. I initially became acquainted with the organization over 8 years ago when I began volunteering at the Humane Society of the North Bay in Vallejo, California. My first contact with the rescue was with its founder, Amanda Lee. She is an incredibly compassionate, bright and hard-working woman, who has built a solid reputation in the rescue community for her good works. She is very knowledgeable about dogs; adept at using social media to their advantage; and resourceful in finding ways of dealing with the myriad of issues that arise in rescue on a daily basis. To their credit, Amanda and her team have developed great relationships with others in the rescue community - such as trainers, veterinaries, behaviorists, and shelters - which this has helped Underdog to become the successful it is today. Underdog's volunteers and fosters are committed to keeping the dogs in their care safe and happy, and to finding each of them the perfect forever family. I am particularly impressed with Underdog's ability to grow its foster base at a time when many other rescues and shelters are struggling to find foster homes for their animals. I suspect the reason Underdog's foster program is so successful is that, unlike some other rescues/shelters, Underdog actually supports its fosters and, as a result, earns their loyalty. My family and I have been searching for over 6-8 months to adopt a dog. We wanted to make sure that not only did we find a dog that was a good fit for our family, but more importantly, we would be a good fit for the dog. We wanted to make sure that whatever dog we adopted would be happy here at our home. After a long search we finally found a dog we felt an instant connection to, just from the pictures. We reached out about the dog and got a response from a woman by the name of Laura. Laura was great an let us half way with the dog. The connection we felt by just looking at the dogs pictures was confirmed when we met the dog at the park. We instantly fell in love and knew we couldn't leave without him. Still we had some apprehension, simply because we wanted to be sure the dog would be happy with us. Laura told us that we could take him home on a 3-4 day trial and if we had any doubts at all we could return him. She said that all we needed to do was pay the adoption fee (which we did) and we could bring him home. She said that if we changed our mind, we would be given our full adoption fee back. We picked him up on a Thursday, so essentially that gave us until Monday to make our final decision. One day after bringing him home we had some concerns. The dog simply didn't seem happy at all. He didn't sleep at all his first night, wasn't eating, didn't want to engage with us at all, and simply wanted to be left alone. I called Laura and explained everything to get in great detail. Again, she was very helpful and we followed all the tips she gave me. Unfortunately nothing got better. In fact things got worse. At this point it was Monday and my husband and I decided we wanted to keep the dog and just allow him time to settle in, no matter how long it took. But then cam Monday night. We started to notice some very aggressive behavior that only escalated and was very scary. The dog became very territorial of our home. He would growl at me and my three boys (1, 7, and 12) if we even walked near him, he would stiffen up if we got to close, started to show his aggression with his body language and by showing us his teeth when he would growl, he would give us direct eye contact with a body position that looked like he was ready to lunge at us. This all happened between Monday night and all of Tuesday. We decided we needed to put him in our backyard as his aggressive behavior was escalating and was unpredictable. I reached out to Laura who told me she'd reach out to Amanda who is the owner of the agency. I didn't hear from Amanda until late Tuesday. When I finally heard from her she agreed to take the dog back the following day and told me to coordinate with Laura. She also said we'd get a full refund, even though they don't normally do that. But she also said that do to the circumstances she'd grant the refund. The following day I received a text that in order to secure my refund I would need to provide a video of the aggressive behavior. Amanda was very passive aggressive and almost confrontational. Her texts made it seem as though she didn't not believe us. I was appalled that she asked me to send her a video. That would mean putting myself or my children in danger. There was no way I was going to do this. Laura also told me over the phone that if we didn't feel safe with the dog, we could call animal control services. That was not the route we wanted to take, but they didn't seem to take our concerns, our safety, or the dogs well being in to consideration. There was no urgency to help us or immediately get the dog back to them. I was also completely mortified that during a time like this, when our economy is shuttered, and people are being very selective of what they spend money on, that Amanda would not grant a refund unless I sent her a video. Our issue is not with Laura. We are completely heartbroken, sad, and traumatized by this. Our issue is with Amanda, her complete disregard for safety, and her lack of urgency in a situation we had no control over. Being that she is the main person in this organization, I would assume she would want to get the dog back to them as soon as possible no matter what. An organization may be good and what they do may be amazing, it if it is run by someone like Amanda... the dogs are not in the best care possible. This soured my opinion of animal adoption agencies and made me think twice about the people that run it. Is it truly her passion, or just her second job. Don't do it if it's not a work of heart!
