It was time to finally take care of some home remodeling, and I did some Yelp research and settled on Golden Star Development to handle the project. This turned out to be a great choice and my wife and I are very pleased with the results. Martin and Karim were a pleasure to work with from the start. They came out soon after my initial phone call to meet my wife and I and review the work we wanted. We appreciated that they took the time to listen to what our goals and desired style was and did not try to rush the meeting. We were open to suggestions, and they offered some good ones that we adopted, especially for some of the little details that really customized the results. As we got rolling into the project it felt like we were doing a remodel with a couple of our "uncles"! We honestly felt they wanted to make us happy and produce the kind of quality work they would do for themselves or members of their family. The project cost was within reason without any unexpected overruns. This remodel involved a bedroom, two hallways, stairway, and complete tear down and redo of a bathroom. The project touched electrical, plumbing, painting, tile work, counter top installation, flooring, carpentry, and completely new shower stall. The crew for each phase arrived on the day promised and did a professional job from start to finish. They worked with us to ensure that each aspect was done to the specifications we desired (we can have very specific requests sometimes!). Each crew was good about prepping to minimize dust and protect floors and furniture. They were also diligent about cleaning up at the end of each day. The only issue we had, which was minor, was that at the beginning of the project there was some communication confusion about who would be showing up, and when, to do work. For example, workmen showed up one morning when we didn't know to expect them (fortunately we happened to be home). This was smoothed out with Martin sending me appointments and updates using Google calendar. Besides the remodel project Martin also helped us with a persistent problem we had been having for years with a window. During heavy rains, water would find its way into the wall and stain the paint on the interior wall. I tried replacing the weather stripping but no improvement. I didn't want the new paint work to get ruined! Martin did a thorough investigation into what was happening, and discovered cracks had formed in the stucco around the window frame. His worker removed the stucco and found the window had not been installed properly with water-resistant measures. He corrected this, then patched up the stucco and painted the repair so well that you can't tell it had ever been touched. A big thank you to everyone on Martin's team who did such excellent and professional work. We do not hesitate to recommend Martin and Karim and Golden Star Development for any remodeling projects. It can seem rather daunting to find a reliable company to do work on our home. We needed a full R&R on our roof (remove the tiles, replace underlayment, put the tiles back). Patrick was the first bid we rec'd. He was the most professional, courteous AND reasonably priced for the service and products used. He seemed genuinely interested in making our kitchen what we wanted and providing helpful advice on small touches that made it even better. The only delay was our fault as the backsplash tile got stuck in customs (between Canada and the US), but Golden Star was very accommodating, coming back as soon as we received the tile. We used HomeAdvisor.com who sent us three contractors. One was very pushy and wanted us to sign a document for financing. The other submitted a bid that I was unable to read. My husband and I met with Martin Estrella, the owner of Golden Star Development and I immediately felt that this is a good company. We received bids to replace three bedroom windows, install one new window, completely gut and remodel family bathroom, replace ceiling fans in the three bedrooms, and remove popcorn ceilings in three bedrooms and the hallway. They were prompt, and did good work. Like most projects of this type, there were a few problems, but as soon as we pointed them out to GSD they fixed it. I am THRILLED with my new bathroom. The removal of the nasty old popcorn ceiling was a revelation - now the rooms look bigger with the nice smooth white ceiling! We will be calling Martin in the fall for roof repairs, and will eventually be using GSD again for other remodeling projects. We highly recommend this business. read more

The best contractors you will find !!! Dont go elsewhere. Shem Sotelo is simply amazing to work with, as he has the knowledge of a contractor (former contractor), and amazing aesthetic appeal (now a designer). These guys WILL NOT, I repeat WILL NOT rip you off. They did our kitchen and bathroom and we could not be happier. At times they gave us less expensive alternatives. What contractor does that ? They are super trust worthy people with scruples. Let me give you an example. About 3 months after they completed our bathroom they came back to refinish some of the work. We have an older home and it simply moves around (as most older homes do). I called them and they came back to re-do some of the work. Was it their fault...No. They did an amazing job to begin with, but as I said we have an older home and I was expecting the grout to be displaced. This was also after the 2014 earthquake. Guess what...? They came back and retouched everything. Ask for Shem he is great to work with. You will feel like you are on a HGTV or The DYN or Property Brothers. I wish they were mechanics !!! They make you believed that the project is big and cost a lot of money and yet when you hire them and started the work it's so simple and all honesty believed did not cost as quoted. They changed 16 roof tiles on my roof with 1 person for 1.5 hrs for $1425.00 And in addition to that, they where unprofessional by being so late and as I said misleading. I do not write reviews and I am doing my first and only review to help others looking for a reliable contractor for their kitchen, bathrooms, flooring, skylights, and painting. I particularly liked that GSD have a foreman that visited my house and checked on the progress and asked me for any problems on a daily basis. He also provided valuable advise on selecting the some of the material. Patrick a partner in the company visited the house 2 - 3 times a week. The master bath including painting of the master bedroom was completed in less than a week and the guest bathroom in a few days. We went on vacation for 16 days and during that time GSD demo'd the kitchen, removed and installed 1000 SF of 20x20 diagonal tiles to the kitchen, hallways, office and family room, While on vacation, the foreman was sending me pictures on their work and responding to my questions and concerns. We came back from vacation to a clean house both inside and outside - flooring tiles installed, kitchen ceiling raised to a vaulted ceiling, installed recessed lighting, skylights (4) also installed, painting completed for the whole house except for minor touch ups, and kitchen waiting and ready for the cabinets to be installed which were delivered and installed the following 3 days. Granite countertop was installed next. Delivery and installation of kitchen appliances done the same week. A week after we arrived from vacation, my wife was cooking in her new kitchen. I was given a timeline of 24 - 30 working days and GSD lived up to their commitment and delivered quality work. It was a painless and happy experience for us! read more

Comments regarding a new roof (demolition, wood repair and shingles): The salesman seemed very knowledgeable about the type of roof that I needed. He was very responsive when asked questions and when I had the 1st few issues with the roof. After the roof was put on, the roofing edges did not lay flat (thick shingles). You could see the wood and roofing paper under the shingles in certain areas. The company wanted me to wait and see if the shingles settled in. Much of the edge work appeared sloppy, mostly on the flat part of the roof. The company forgot to put the white UV coating on the flat part of the roof as well. I had to send them my contract so that they could see that I ordered UV coating. I noticed later that one part of the fascia had a hole and small linear gaps in one area where water could enter. The prior shingles overlapped the fascia more than the new shingles. If the fascia needed repair, it should have been pointed out to the home owner for repair and not just left as is. The company wanted to charge $400 for a fascia repair less than 4 inches wide. The project manager should have put more effort into the Quality Control of the job. I don't think he QC'd the job. Upper management never visited the site for review of the minor problems. By the way, their Website only invites reviews from satisfied customers. You need a phone number and a code sent by the company to write a review. read more
