I've had to re-post this review a few times now ... somehow my negative reviews of Goldman Home Improvement keep vanishing from Google, Angi/Home Advisor and Yelp, leaving only 5-star reviews. I don't know how he does that, but I insist on re-posting because I feel you need to hear about my experience before deciding on something as important as a contractor for your home. For starters, Hussein Hussein of Goldman Home Improvement is NOT LICENSED to conduct home renovations in NY State. The license number he listed on his contract is not only expired; it was never a general contractor's license, it was a SALES license. NYS is cracking down on sales people pretending to be GC's, so his license will never be renewed. I urge you to call 311 and check for yourself if you are considering hiring this company. After working with him for almost 4 months I can attest: While Hussein clearly has a gift for sales (he could sell ocean water to a fish!), he lacks the basic knowledge of how a home works structurally; he's only capable of doing the surface aesthetic stuff. For example, I asked him to create tray ceilings in my bedrooms, and showed him many pictures of what a tray ceiling looks like. He removed the ceiling beams ... and then he obviously had no clue what to do next!! He kept staring at the ceiling, then looking at me, then back at the ceiling. Finally, he uttered: "There is no way to reinforce the beams. I cannot guarantee the ceiling will not fall in on you." I kid you not, these were his actual words!!! The contractor I hired to finish the job confirmed that, sure enough, had Hussein finalized my apt, the ceiling would have indeed buckled and fallen in!!! Additionally, Hussein could care less about the efficiency of your home (even though HE was the one who insisted I put in central AC instead of mini-splits, he refused to insulate the whole apartment, despite it being on my dime); he won't even consider doing anything that's out of the norm (I asked him to add soundproofing--again, at my expense--he absolutely refused); he uses the cheapest, unqualified trades (his plumber pitched the plumbing away from the drain, so the water has to travel against gravity!!!); and he uses only cheap materials (he works exclusively with Floor and Decor). When I hired Hussein to conduct a complete gut of my Brooklyn apt, I made the huge mistake of paying him a substantial portion up front ($50,000). After 3.5 months, he had not put in a new kitchen, new bathrooms, or new laundry room. He never replaced my floors, doors, windows or fireplace. He did not deliver central air conditioning as promised, nor did he upgrade my electric panel. He completed about 8% of the scope of work items outlined in the contract, but retained 45% of the payment, and refuses to refund me. My attorney tells me I have a solid case of breach of contract. Worse: THE FEW THINGS HUSSEIN COMPLETED WERE EXECUTED SO POORLY, IT ALL HAD TO BE DEMOLISHED AND RE-DONE. The tray ceiling had to be completely reconstructed and reinforced. The skylight he installed leaked heavily at the first rain, and had to be replaced. The hatch ladder he installed makes it impossible to access my roof -- the whole point of the ladder -- without being an olympic gymnast!! The walls he framed were wobbly. And Hussein instructed me to NOT tell the electrician -- the guy who was upgrading my electric panel -- that I'd be adding a washer, dryer, dishwasher, and air conditioning "because he will charge too much money". Seriously?? How does one upgrade the electrical panel without communicating ones electric needs to the electrician? When I confronted him on these issues, he reacted with mercurial temper--HE QUIT! So I was forced to bring in a qualified contractor mid-project to un-do all the damage Hussein had done and start over -- effectively DOUBLING my renovation budget and timeline! Goldman Home Improvement was absolutely amazing. Jose was extremely responsive from the beginning. They keep you informed thru the entire process. I received daily updates on the progress and any problems/questions were addressed/answered immediately. As a result the bathroom turned out better than we could have imagined. Other contractors were reluctant to change the layout and were unwilling to accommodate our requests. From the get go Jose simply said, "we will get it done " and he delivered. We have gotten some quotes from contractors and started with one that was cheaper; however, we soon found out the quality was the missing part. When we pressured the contractor, they started lagging behind and disappeared. We later called Goldman to help us get out of the ditch that we were in. I have nothing but the highest praise for Hussein and his team. They're just great: responsive, hard working, safety and health conscious, focused on keeping the workspace clean, and most importantly do really great, high-quality work. We were in the midst of a modest DIY renovation of one floor of our home (some kitchen work, new bathroom tile, new exterior door, exterior hose bib, etc.) and needed help with electrical, plumbing, wallboard and wall repair, tiling, hanging new door, etc. It's the kind of job contractors despise: a bunch of little projects over a number of trades that are time consuming and necessitate returning over multiple days. It's also the kind of project, in my experience, that can drag on for weeks. The experience with Hussein and his team, however, was everything you'd want in a contractor. Living in Jersey City in a hot construction/remodel area it's very hard to get someone to even answer your call let alone come to your home for a consultation/quote. Hussein answered my couple and was in my kitchen the next day (in a mask, as is safety conscious). We had workers working the following morning and they finished up over 4 days. Really, really fast. And the work was really good. On top of that Hussein took the time to understand that we were budget conscious on the project and helped steer us in a direction that saved money and kept the character of our old house. During the project we even added additional emergency work. Our skylight started leaking and Hussein and his crew worked to fix the skylight and repair large sections of our flat roof before the tropical storm hit. The skylight was leak free and finished in hours just ahead of the storm which would otherwise have been very damaging to the ceiling below. I will certainly continue working with the team in the future as we have smaller and bigger projects come up. Great collaboration and they understood exactly what we needed and how to get it done right. Always easy to reach via text or phone. The materials he used were of top quality. The team worked non-stop for two weeks in my loft. I was working from home a lot during this work and could see the dedication to details and how hard they worked. They were meticulous, always on time, polite, quiet, (and non-smokers)! Once the job was done the bill matched the quote. Everything looks so beautiful now, even better than I had imagined! We did a full-house renovation and needed a company that could do a quality job in a timely manner and not bust the budget. We scheduled a meeting with the lead contractor at Goldman Home Improvement, at our home where we discussed the project and we were quite impressed when he shared his ideas during this initial review. He talked with us for a bit to find out our style and lead us in the proper direction related to the aesthetics and structure of our home. We found Dorota to be very knowledgeable of her craft. We met a few more times to review the architecture plans and decided to go with Goldman Home Improvements. To give you an overview, we purchased a ranch-style home and decided to expand by adding our master bedroom ensuite on the upper level. In addition, we had to gut the kitchen, two bathrooms, the family room and the dining room. To open up the space, we had to relocate the stairs and move a few walls. We added new windows and doors throughout the entire home, as well as updated all electrical, and plumbing. Since we added the second level master ensuite, we decided to replace the entire roof and made it all the same color. It was a huge job and oh my goodness, the Goldman Home Improvement team performed well above expectations. We had no idea the amount of work involved in this process and his team of people worked with us, very closely, throughout the entire process. And for this, we are grateful. Of course, during the process we wanted to make additional changes once the walls and ceilings came down. The contractor came out, discussed the project, gave us a 'yes' or 'no' recommendation and we took his advice. And if there was a need to involved the architect, he let us know that too. If something was too costly or could not be done due to the structure of the home, he advised us. Having the opportunity to communicate with your contractor is always a plus because we didn't know everything about this process. So this open line of communication was awesome. We were totally impressed with the workmanship, the professionalism as well as the willingness to stay in communication with us. Always the professional, the team went out of their way to ensure that we were happy with their work. When we stopped by, they walked us through the project, ensured our satisfaction and proceeded to complete their projects. We learned so much during this renovation and never thought we would be selecting products like a transfer valve, a pressure balancing diverter to a square designed shower drain, molding, right-hand or left-hand doors, etc. We thought all we needed were a few toilets, vanities and faucets. Ha! After all is said and done, we probably would not have had this pleasant of an experience without the help of the entire Goldman Home Improvement team. Even though, we stopped by daily to see the progress, we can't tell you how excited we were to see the completed project. Everything, except the basement is new...that's next. Michael and his team gave us that reassurance by delivering an exceptional product through skilled craftsmanship. I would be lying if I said that this was not a tedious, stressed and sometimes overwhelming process; but, in all honesty the Goldman Home Improvement team made it less overwhelming. And we appreciate their patience. It was and still is an amazing feeling when we look around our home. We have a very beautiful and a very comfortable home and look forward to enjoying time by the fireplace or sipping coffee while sitting in the sunroom with the touch of beautiful floors adding warmth to your feet. When family and friends stop by they are very impressed. They love everything, the kitchen, bathrooms, sunroom and of course the fabulous master ensuite. The soaker tub, along with multiple jets and the steam shower adds a sense of luxury to the master bath. And we enjoy every moment of it! Now, would we recommend Goldman Home Improvement; the answer is yes. Would we use Goldman Home Improvement on a future project; yes, as that basement is next.
