I wanted to take a moment to share some feedback regarding my experience at Gold's Gym. My husband and I have been members of this facility, but we ultimately decided that we needed to move to another gym due to an uncomfortable and even stressful environment created by a particular front desk staff member. There is a young woman at the front desk--unfortunately, I don't know her name, but she has a buzz cut and tattoos. We have noticed ongoing issues regarding professionalism and boundaries, particularly with her behavior, which I have found to be inappropriate. We visit the gym daily, sometimes even with our child, and this staff member consistently flirts with my husband. Initially, we assumed she was just being friendly, but over time, her behavior became increasingly disrespectful toward me as his wife. She never acknowledges me, yet she makes a point to compliment my husband every time we walk in. Additionally, I know this is not an isolated issue, as a friend and coworker of mine--who also attends the gym--has shared a similar experience. He mentioned that this staff member was openly discussing her personal life, including stories about nightclubs and her previous job as a stripper all this while flirting with him as well. I wanted to bring this to everyone attention, in case you're thinking about going to this gym with your partner. Professionalism and Respect are not a thing here read more

Golds used to be the standard, but 2 out of the 3 in the area have closed. Leading to overpopulated hours nonstop from 6am until 10pm. If you don't pay for the 24 hr service expect a crowd gym every session. On top of that the pool location is super awkward. It's placed right in the center of the gym surrounded fully by windows, so you can get stared at by everyone in the gym while sitting in the hot tub . So in conclusion if you'd like an extremely over populated gym. With mediocre equipment, and hidden fees sprinkled in there Golds is a perfect choice read more

This franchise uses a third party billing system called peak payment solutions to extract money from their members. Even if you are not under any sort of contract or commitment they will not allow you to cancel your membership directly. You are instead instructed to address it with the billing company. This makes it next to impossible to cancel the membership, so your only course of action is to simply stop paying them. Then Peak payment solutions will immediately start charging you late fees and will start threatening collections and calling relentlessly within a week of a missed payment. It is illegal to try to extort payment out of people, who are under zero contractual commitment to pay you, by threatening collections. read more

The gym itself is adequate though staff do not enforce posted rules, especially concerning dropping weights, which is startling and dangerous when trying to focus on one's own lifting. The larger problem is their collection wing, Peak Payment, which uses strongarm tactics to extract funds from members. I will avoid relaying the saga but I will say that they do not adhere to the "Click to Cancel" law which technically is not yet in effect though they would be well advised to follow it now. Beware joining Gold's, they will have their hand in your pocket. read more

Mia bridged gaps with customers that made them confident and comfortable to be in a gym environment. Equipment and sauna are constantly broken. There is an annual charge for 'enhancements' but not enhancements have been done. Have been told since December that the pool is opening 'soon' it is now almost September. Also have been told for three months that they are moving to 24/7. It seems they will just keep telling you what they think you want to hear. Also heard one of the staff making homophobic jokes while working at the front desk which should never be acceptable. read more

We loved Golds Gym Oakley...until it was sold. The new owners don't care about customers or their own employees. First, after returing for the season, I asked for my membership to be unfrozen. They charged my account multiple times over 6 weeks, and failed to activate my membership. Without an active membership you cannot see the class schedule or sign up for classes. Despite multiple visits, emails, and calls, they didn't activate my membership for SIX weeks. I asked for a credit for at least four weeks that I missed, but they refused, despite THEY failed to activate my membership, all while charging me. Second, in the past I have been able to enjoy a seasonal membership, as I only live here 5 months of they year. With new owerhip, they have a "policy" of only allowing a two month freeze, yet the length of granted freezes appears to be applied inconsistently, I assume based on how much $ you spend on training. So the disparate treatment is frustrating. Third, despite paying $ for training sessions, if you don't use them within a certain time period, they expire. I had to battle to keep sessions after my trainer had to cancel a week due to illness. Don't get me wrong, people get sick and I understand that, but the owners should be taken into account and quickly granted the request. By the way, I loved my trainer, she's awesome, so I'm sad I have to walk away as a matter of principle. To make matters worse, the new owners hide behind other and makes it impossible to reach them. Per local managers, they have zero empowerment to make andy decisions, and all queries must go through the app. The folks running the app try to point back to local management, and when I point out the irony, the response is basically that they are a third party vendor and cant help. There is no means to know the identity of, or contact information of, the owners/legal entity (which I believe is legally required). The new owners of Gold's Gym (oakley, patton) don't realize, people have options, so i've exercised my option. Not only does my golf club have a gym, but so does the Asheville Raquet clus (and there are plenty of others. The facilities at the racquet club are huge, the training is substantially cheaper, and in addition to courts, they have a pool, a pool is something the new owners promised when they starting charging a bi-annual equipment fee, but didn't deliver on. Avoid frustration and find yourself a different gym. read more

Needs to be 24 hours. Canceling my membership was a nightmare. First, covid happened and they shut down the pool. Like if there's a place in a gym where covid couldn't survive it would be the pool. I understand that the sauna probably needed to be closed. Then they finally reopened the pool, after the Covid curve failed to flatten and some Floridians bought it and shut everything down again. I realize my hometown of Asheville North Carolina is a small town but we do have a fair number of gyms and I've been to many of them. I find this Golds Gym to be one of the best. It's owned by the corporation, so it's not a franchise gym and to me it shows in the quality of the space as well as the instructors. Currently I'm obsessed with the Golds Burn class that Christopher Farmer instructs. Great class you should check it out! read more

I've been a member at golds since I was 16, I'm 25 now. I started off at Patton. Trained at all 3 over the years. I trained at all 3 in Greensboro when I was in college. I've made so many friends and memories at golds. There has been a recent change of leadership at Fairview. I was stopped abruptly during my session today, I was having a great day, I was absolutely clueless as to what was wrong. I was told to grab my stuff and go to the office. I was told that there was a decision from the higher ups(from the GM) that my membership was terminated. Not for something against the rules, not something I was ever warned for. Something that is common practice. I love golds, but not this location. Very poor leadership, lacking integrity. read more

July 25 I walked in to golds gym in Oakley in Asheville North Carolina and canceled my gym membership. I had to pay for my last month which was charged on the same day. I have not had a charge on my card from July 25 until January 14 when I woke up and had six charges in one day for different amounts in the $180 range total. I called the gym and asked what was going on and they told me that I owed back membership dues, I told them how it was canceled and they asked if I remembered who I talk to when I came in, I asked them who they bought lunch from six months ago? My card has stayed the same the entire time yet no charges were made for six months. I don't know what type of BS scam that location is trying to pull. So now I am having to go through reporting this fraudulent transaction. 10 out of 10 would not recommend golds gym for anything at this point. read more

I'm not your typical Gold's Gym member, although I'm seeing more and more of my contemporaries all the time. I'm a retired teacher who came to Gold's after my former pool closed. I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the facility as well as the variety of classes and equipment. I was greeted by Skyler who listened to my needs and concerns. He didn't pressure me and encouraged me to give him a call or email if I had any more questions. I called him three days later and signed up. Since that day, he has greeted me by name every time I walk in the door and has taken care of anything I needed. I have been in both the morning and evening aerobics pool classes. Both Mike and Sandra do a very good job leading the classes while using vastly different methods and I attend whichever my schedule allows. Back in April, I decided it was time to add some strength training and also work on weight loss, so I made an appointment with Kam to help me get started. She spent an hour with me doing the 3D body scan, discussing my goals, and helping me create a plan to meet them. Added to my pool time, I now take the Senior Strength class and work out on the recumbent bike and the treadmill. After a month, I met back with her and got another scan showing weight and inches lost. It was so motivational that I added the monthly scans and meetings with Kam to my plan. She is an excellent trainer and is gently pushing me to where I need to be. I sing these praises to anyone looking for a place to work on their health. Great facility and awesome staff! read more

I joined this gym with the understanding that my membership would be month to month. I suspended my membership when COVID hit. I attempted to go back 6 months later and I saw multiple people not masking up so decided to wait. When I inquired about starting up my membership I was told that I would be charged for the time that I did not use. I decided to go back a year later and saw that masks were mandatory so I felt safe going back. Again I was charged for 5 months although I did not use the gym. I really wish there were other options in Asheville. Golds is the best of the worst, unfortunately. There are other issues as well. It's not very clean and equipment on occasion hoes out of service for long periods of time. read more

I moved within the last two months and received an offer in the mail for a free three-day pass at this gym. So I went all three days. After the third day, I was sold. I put in my 30 day notice at my old gym and signed up for a basic membership for the Gold's Gym on Fairview Rd. This is a very nice gym. The hours are agreeable for a working person, who needs flexibility. They are open on Sat/Sun at 7:00am. My old gym did not open until 1:00pm on Sunday. The facility is spacious, lots of room for workout. The locker rooms are the same, you never feel cramped with regard to space. The sauna is a very comfortable size. Also the shower facilities are very ample. I have never had to wait to shower....my old gym... that was always an issue. read more

Bad management and sketchy corporate practices. Other than that fantastic gym. I came due to a free trail for a 30 days. The deal was if I hit at least (8) sessions before the 30 days and I wanted to cancel I could do so freely. I hit (8) sessions. When the time came the salesperson had to escalate to his manager. She told me to my face that it would get cancelled without a charge. We did a written cancellation. But days later I see Gold's Gym is still charging me for that month. I called and the salesperson told me it had to be (8) consecutive days. I did (7) with one day where I came in the morning and then the evening to hit (8) check-ins. They charged me for a second month and at that point I disputed the charge and won. Gold's Gym kept on calling though. I didn't mind paying for the first month even if I was only using the gym for seven days. But I don't like being conned. Now I made it clear even before I started this trial that I am travelling. I was seriously considering Asheville as a place to live. What I discovered in my (7) days there was that non-locals and free trails do not mix. Apparently, I was supposed to prove I was a local to get the trail, but the salesperson (Brian) did not mention it until I asked to refund. I've seen the same localism at a boxing gym nearby. Both that gym and Gold's are chains. I would think corporate would have the clout to override localism It's good advertising for the chain as a whole since Gold's is in multiple states. Pros: 1. Fantastic set of equipment and clean looking gym. One of the most impressive gyms I've been to that isn't a $200+ a month athletic club. 2. Friendly staff (at first). 3. Easy and free parking. 4. Decent swimming pool. Cons: 1. Cancellation is a pain in the butt. 2. Management did not keep its promise made to my face. 3. Overpriced for what it is. 4. The sales guy from Florida seemed helpful and apologetic when the cancellation didn't work out and Gold's kept charging me. But nothing changed. 5. Took a Crossfit like class from a red headed man. I walked in and he told everyone to grab a PVC pipe. When he saw me he said don't grab the PCP pipe now! At best this was a bad joke, but I am mixed race and it was my first time in the South so I definitely did not take well to it. Additionally, I don't do drugs and didn't like the projection that I did even in the form of a joke Keep it PC man not PCP or PVC. Besides that it was a great introduction to Crossfit. 6. Previously friendly staff at the front desk became unfriendly once they figured I wasn't going to stay in the gym. It was odd. read more

Kinda pricey for what ya get.Large space with a lot of equipment, yet many stay out of order and in a state of disrepair for at least a month or mOre. They Definitely have an issue with overall cleanliness of facility and equipment - (even after repeated comments to staff) I Have to wipe equipment Before and after use because they rarely wipe things down and getting onto things with dirty skin and sweat of others is nasty. in Sometimes the same debris and funk stay in showers And in floor for more than a day. read more

I love how long Gold's, as a organization, has been around the country. I remember joining back in the 80's in my 20's in New York. Then going to the famous Gold's in Santa Monica, CA in the 90's. And now, in Asheville, NC for a spell, I'm working out at Gold's again. I can always count on Gold's to have a good selection of machines, free-weights, and plenty of cardio. I hardly ever have to wait. The "sales" policies are still a bit aggressive, but once I was firm about what membership I wanted, so was off and running.... read more

1 star for friendly front desk staff, but the rest is what you see in many reviews. Difficult cancellation policy that will charge you for a full month after you cancel despite all the "no contract/month-to-month" marketing. Minimal safety practices during covid with no enforcement of the state mask mandate while it was active. Equipment frequently down or dirty. Handsoap in the bathroom is a lottery day to day. I used to love coming to this gym but no longer enjoy it. Moving on to smaller local studios for now despite Golds being the most conveniently located for me, it's just not the same. read more

I've been a member at this Fairview Road location for over a year and have went consistently other than Covid shutdowns. I'm not sure what people are talking about broken equipment not being repaired since I can't recall even ONE out of order sign. It doesn't appear they are reopening the pool or hot tub soon which sucks but there is still a pandemic going on. I usually go early and that is a chill dedicated crowd. When I go in the evenings it's the cliché grunting meatheads, girls showing off their new Gym Shark leggings or groups of high school kids standing around talking about what pre-workout they use. It almost always sucks in there from 6-9pm. The locker rooms are kept clean and on at least 3 different occasions a guy was deep cleaning every locker and sanitizing the showers. I will say I wish there was more enforcement on mask use especially with the new Covid variants (Delta and coming soon to a gym near you, the Mu variant). I've had no issue with the front desk or management either. Unlike other gyms I've been to, the trainers here don't try to pitch you sessions if they happen to be passing by. My membership expires Oct 2021 and unfortunately won't be renewing ONLY because of my 25 minute drive (found a place closer). read more

I would ideally give this gym 2 and a half stars but that is not an option, so..... Let me start by saying the Positives: *Great selection of cardio machines and kept in good working order. *Weight machines and free weights are up to date, plentiful and work well *Staff was wonderful (Gwen) when I locked my keys TO my locker IN my locker and they had to cut the lock off * Gym is very clean * Very good personal trainers Negatives: *Any problems are always redirected "It's Corporate's decision" *Fox News on overhead TV's (O M G!) *Chemicals used for cleaning are not "green" and inhaling Clorox and other cleaners while you are in the dressing area or on a cardio machine is counterproductive to why we are there (...uh, to get healthier?!) *They turn up the overhead music/advertisements SOOO loud, you can't hear what is in your own headphones without turning yours up and damaging your hearing. But once again, "Corporate decides the volume." *Some group class leave their doors open and BLAST their music at deafening levels. Totally overkill, and impacting every one else outside that class. * There is a need for more auxillary weights (the ones added to weight machines to increase at smaller increments.) You have to run around to find one, and often by the time you get back to your machine, someone is on it. (never get off a machine or it's a goner in this gym.) *Yoga room is cold and "windy" from overhead blowers *No automatic wifi connection. Every day you have to log in (its like dial up) to get wifi. read more

This complaint is for Golds customer service... I did not a problem with the oakley plaza gym location or their employees: I was so excited to return to the gym after a year of avoiding public places due to the pandemic and being a healthcare worker. After receiving both vaccine doses, I finally felt safe to resume working out again. I was shocked to find out when I walked in the door that I owed over $500 in fees that accrued over the past year. This happened because while the gym was shut down and they had frozen everyone's accounts, my credit card information coincidentally changed. So, without my knowledge, they continued to attempt to charge my old credit card when they re-opened and added fees every month for it being declined. Based on the situation and having been a loyal member for many years...I expected customer service to make things right. Not the case. They were unwilling to forgive the misunderstanding which happened 100% because of covid-19 and me trying to do right by my patients. They did not seem to understand the bigger picture and obviously don't care about their customers. I did not feel it was right to pay for a service that I had not used because of the pandemic and my role in healthcare; their response was that they would report me to collections agency. Way to go Golds, you win? read more

After being told the manager was "busy", she finally came out and talked to me... definitely lacks character values and is another one of those greedy people who just wants peoples money. This gym was good before Covid. But after filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding, was sold to a German company. They have reopened under State guidelines, but the gym is a free-for-all of maskless, heavy-breathing members. The management has made a minimal effort to keep members distanced from one another.... it's the worst scenario of pandemic safety that I've seen so far this year. read more

Very bad management. They forged signatures onto new agreements adding annual fees that were never agreed to. They tried to blame front desk staff members for misrepresenting the sale when the account was setup by a sales rep and not anyone from the front desk. Then tried to slander employees who were smart enough to leave that place as the ones who messed up the accounts. They we're also sure for racial discrimination by a former personal trainer they fired. read more

Obesity is an epidemic in the US so why wouldn't you want families to join a gym? GOLD's Gym does NOT offer family memberships everything is a-la-cart -- even the classes. A pool deigned for laps 25 meters is always too warm and recently had to close because it didn't meet health standards. It continues to be cloudy and difficult to see when swimming. Go to the YMCA and their pool is always great. Pros: New equipment, lots of variety of free weight and cardio. It's clean and staff is nice. Cons: No family membership, relatively high registration fee, very cloudy warm pool, showers frequently out of soap read more

I enjoy this gym and go often. My only complaint is that the staff keeps the water weight equipment locked up. The staff does not keep any other equipment locked up. For some reason, even though I am a paying member of the gym, I am denied free use of the water weights in the pool. I have to find someone to come unlock a room where these "valuable?" plastic weights are kept. Gold's management needs to have a meeting with the staff so everyone is on the same page, and the water weights and other pool things are available to members without a request. I was a member with this gym for almost 2 years. It's large and they have good equipment. However, upon reopening (while covid is still skyrocketing in the area) they decided they would start charging people monthly without notice. Super sketchy and unprofessional which reminded me I should absolutely support locally owned gyms instead of corporate. They claim to have sent out an email stating they would charge the monthly fee upon reopening but I searched my email and found nothing about it. So I'm $120 in the hole (they almost caused me an overdraft fee in my account) when I make half what I was making before the pandemic and haven't even been near the gym. Greed takes precedence over human compassion at Gold's Gym. read more

The gym is close to my house - very convenient. It's always clean and well maintained and the staff is cheery and helpful. But, the blowers in the exercise room where I attend yoga classes are strong and loud. We have asked to have the blowers left off during the class but am always directed to "upper management" who are not in the building or are in a meeting. read more

Clean gym, friendly staff, & overall a great atmosphere! Hands down the best location in the Asheville area.
