I had no idea what to call the hairstyle I wanted my son to get but with a little explaining and giving Anthony the freedom to do his thing, it came out amazing. My boyfriend comes and gets his hair cut here from time to time. The decor here is wicked awesome and I love it. There's always music playing, the TV's are always playing something and the seating is pretty comfortable. I love coming here because it's super laid back. I do suggest making an appointment though! It's much better than waiting around or being a walk in. This is a legit barber shop! Hot towels, beard trims and shaves, great undercuts, great everything. This place is legit. He, and the shop, are just that good. When I paid a tip today for my haircut, I didn't think it was enough, so this review's going to be my secondary tip for such fantastic service. Today was my second haircut at Goldstar Barbershop, both times with Jae as my barber. Can I confess? I'd been going to Supercuts and Great Clips for, well, decades. I always felt uncomfortable getting my hair cut, as if it were nearly as bad as a dental appointment. It was something to get through and hope for the best. I had no idea what I was missing out on. I went into Goldstar on a whim a few months ago. I asked for a haircut, having 20 minutes to spare before work. Yet when I started, Jae cut my hair with careful mastery, an almost zen-like precision, the way you'd expect a bonsai cutter to attend to his bonsai. He took his time, not trying to rush through the cut and onto the next customer. I not only appreciated the sense of being cared for, but I was impressed with the attention to detail. After the haircut, which relaxed me unlike how I ever felt at the big chains, Jae pointed to the shampoo chairs (or whatever you call those things) and I thought perhaps, being profoundly Deaf and prone to misunderstanding people, that I had inadvertently agreed to an upgrade to a shampoo. I went along with it, ignoring the clock, because why not give it a whirl. Seated in the chair, soon I had a hot towel on my face with lemongrass essential oil relaxing me further. As if that wasn't enough, he does a light face massage through the towel. Once he begins shampoo work, the magic begins with a head massage that threatened to put me to sleep. I swear I could have napped right then and there. It was as if all stress got kneaded right out. I'd find out later, seeing his card, that he's also a massage therapist, which explains the skill. After the shampoo, he finishes with a scalp treatment and tea tree moisturizer, all of this done without rush. Meanwhile, Jae's chatting with a nearby customer about something. I sit quietly, almost meditating, because I can't really engage in conversation in such times as a Deaf person who needs eye contact and preferably sign language. Customers nearby always seem at ease, probably feeling as relaxed as I did, drinking a complimentary drink. The TVs are aplenty, usually showing a captioned episode of Friends whenever I'm there (I think it's the time frame, not some weird universe where there's such a thing as a channel showing only Friends). The atmosphere is chill, cool, a touch of the old barbershop with a modern twist that's still authentic. And yes, I'm happy with the haircut. I wish I wasn't thinning on top, but hey Jae, you know what you're doing. read more

Had a very unfortunate experience here today. I've been here before and normally the customer service is great but today wasn't the case I waited a hour for a walk in. Which I don't normally mind and understand. I know making an appointment is the faster way but today I was in hurry and just decided to stop in. After a hour my turn was nearing. I told the lady that I had to run my daughter to her dance studio (literally down the street). Since she was cleaning I figured I could run her over there and come back quick. She asked if i wanted her to wait or go on to the next person in line. I told her I would only be 5 min MAX. She said that was fine. I rushed my daughter to her dance and made it back as promised. I walked in and the lady had already started working on the next person. As you can imagine, I was infuriated by this. She told me she would wait, and didn't. If knew she wasn't, I would have gone somewhere else. They lost my business for good now. read more

Excellent service and styling. My barber was J Appointment scheduled before hand. Got there and was seated within a few minutes of my appointment. Been going to a barber in SLO for awhile, and was recommended here by a friend, having moved back to Visalia recently. He was friendly and precise in his skills. Which was impressive given it was a Friday afternoon. I didn't feel rushed. I received 3 compliments on my cut and style going to Costco just an hour afterward, from complete strangers. Eventually ended up giving his card to the 3rd person who complimented, after they mentioned they were looking for a good barber in the area for their boyfriend. I will be back, and will have to pick up some more cards to recommend them to others. Just had my first hair cut at Goldstar. Gene was my man, and the experience was excellent. So, let me tell about it. recently decided to change barbers after three years. I like the traditional men's haircut experience of conversation, patience, scissors, neck shave, and hot towel. I researched all the places in town. Almost all do the artistic stuff and the youthful high fade that is popular. I want a gentleman's haircut. No zig zags; no heavily oiled pompadour; no wedges. I did my research. Several looked acceptable. I assumed that I would just experiment. I did spot the words "razor neck shave and hot towel" in one of the Goldstar reviews. This is where I would start. I called and made an appointment with Gene. He is not one of the people named in reviews, but he sounded polite and reassuring. Plus, he had an opening the same day as I called. Goldstar is just off Main Street on Court. A fun looking interior with a lot of wall decorations. It certainly had a youthful vibe. As a senior, I felt even more senior. Gene was exactly on time when he greeted me. He is a three-year resident of Visalia, having moved here from Australia. His wife is a teacher. Gene had an excellent manner. He listed to what I wanted. His work area was neat and well organized. He was highly skilled with scissors, which is a lost concept. The clippers with all their numbered attachments have made hair cutting a plug-and-play. Gene was very precise. He made sure to check in with me about the cut as he was doing it. He carries a conversation well. Very polite, serious about what he is doing, and cares how I'm doing. He finished with a straight razor neck shave, which I enjoy. To finish the experience, this shop gives you a shampoo and head massage at the end. How great! As a nice touch, they offer clients a beverage of their choice, which includes adult beverages. I believe the experience lasted about 35-40 minutes. My former place would finish in 10 minutes. The only place in town, in my opinion, to get a haircut and I've done the downtown circuit. Best part, you can make an appointment. While others may offer a less expensive cut, (except for East to West, as they charge the most) waiting for an hour or two is not worth the few dollars you save. Oh yeah, and did I mention the hot towel service and a beer or bottled water with your cut? Mat is my barber, and after a cut, I always get compliments. This place is amazing, I have been here twice now, and have gotten Matt both times as a walk-in. I have been to several other barber shops in the area, but none match this one. Your cut will come with a wash, a hot towel, and in today's case, a beer. Most other barber shops (and salons) have you leave with those annoying little hairs in your neck etc., not so with this place. They also don't expect you to speak fluent barber when asking how you want your hair as I have encountered at some of the other shops. The customer service and the time and effort that Valerie put into my haircut was impressive! They don't let you leave with hair clippings down your neck and who knows where else. I Schedule an appointment then wait over an hour and have to leave, I show up on a Saturday when they are supposed to be open nobody shows up for 45 minutes and I have to leave, call two days in a row they can't schedule an appointment, i am told to just walk in, I show up Saturday and they are only taking appointments!!! So this is my first ever review, ever. I got a haircut here about 3 weeks ago by reservation. The place has all the looks of a great shop, and maybe I didn't get the right person there but I showed the girl pics and a video of how I wanted my hair. I had grown it for quite some time and it was looking nice, it just needed a nice fade and a little off the top. This girl didn't even give me a proper fade which I noticed when I got home. Then as I started to try and style my hair, it started to go in so many different directions. I was so frustrated, I had to cut a lot off myself and as the weeks have gone by it has gotten progressively worse. I work with people all day and have to constantly be worried about the direction of my hair. I'm a grown ass man, close to tears. I've never had so much anxiety in my life. read more
