I find myself grading these hotel/restaurants on a slight curve - if you're in Rüdesheim, odds are you're on holiday in one of the most touristy area in Germany. Keeping that in mind, eating at a place like Zum Drosselmüller can be a very enjoyable experience. There's not too much to distinguish this restaurant from the others in the area, as they all tend to serve the same people with the same food. My girlfriend and I came to this place due it an expansive beer/wine menu, reasonable prices, and accessible-for-English-speakers menu. They also have a nice outdoor seating area in the back.
So far this review has been slightly negative, but Zum Drosselmüller's food is actually pretty good. My girlfriend ordered the Garden Salad (9,60 €) and I got the Roast Pork Knuckle (14,50 €). The salad was large and unremarkable, with large chunks of ham, cheese, egg and tomatoes on a mountain of green lettuce. Solid but you won't tell anyone about it when you get home. The Roast Pork Knuckle however was a sight to behold - a large hunk of pork with a steak knife stuck in it, as if signifying to the prospective eater that this pig was still alive twenty minutes ago and was killed *just for you*. Flanked in either side of your massive pork knuckle was a sticky and tasty potato dumpling and, speaking honestly, the best sauerkraut I have ever eaten. They could've just given me a plate of that sauerkraut and I'd die happy. It helps the pork was pretty good as well - juicy and only a little bit fatty, with salty and chewy skin you'll either love or hate.
Overall, you can do a lot worse in Rüdesheim, and I walked away from this placed very satisfied and absolutely stuffed. I can't speak to the authenticity of the food, but what I had was pretty solid. It also helps the beer is awesome and served in obscenely tall glasses. I'd recommend.
