Be aware that this restaurant is on the mainly tourist strip of town. Very commercially prepared German fare. We ordered the Jaëgar Schnitzel and it was most definitely frozen, defrosted, and pan fried. The potatoes were the same. Nous n'avions pas ce type de faim donc nous nous sommes contentés de partager une assiette de salade avec des soupes et cela était parfait. Efficient staff, good selections. Brat is amongst the best. Flavor and mouth feel - above many others. You would find it hard to find a bratwurst with no casing feel but held together this well after cooking. It had just the right browning and an interior so juicy you would think the Neckar river is going to shoot right out of it! The potatoes were moist but browned with a flavor that hinted that they could have been dry. The Pilsner house beer was amongst the best pils I've ever had, and since I hate pils and usually avoid it because I'm extremely sensitive to bitter(look up super taster), this speaks more volumes than a university about why you should also give their Pilsner a chance if you don't like it. read more

If looking for good German food at reasonable prices definitely come here. Took me three tries to go through their house special Huge huge chunk of meat recommend ordering between 2-3 at least to share! Service was a bit slow as they are very busy but polite hence 4 not 5 stars highly recommend the place. Note I don't drink alcohol so can't comment on beer etc read more

What a great, authentic, dark German experience this place offered! We ducked in here to grab some food, and it did not disappoint! The wine was generously poured, the beer cold and delicious. We ordered the sausage and sauerkraut for 4, and it was enough food to feed 5-6 easily! And it was delicious. Service was great and friendly and spoke seamless English, which was helpful for us. Emily was our server and she was very helpful and kind. A tour group did come in towards the end of our lunch, which made for a lot of noise, but it felt like the kind of energy that this place thrives on! read more

The atmosphere here is very nice but the food wasn't so good. My roasted pork was VERY dry and so was my daughter chicken. We couldn't pinpoint the flavor in their sausage dish but it didn't sit well with me or my husband. We were very disappointed in the food and beer. Our server was nice. read more

We made our way over here thanks to Yelp. My husband wanted authentic German food, but I needed vegetarian options. I thought that might be a tall order, but I was pleased to find several vegetarian dishes. The restaurant is much bigger than you would expect looking from the outside. We got tucked away in the back and had wonderful, young energetic servers. My husband went with the pork knuckle since it's a regional specialty, and I got the schupfnudeln which is essentially finger-shaped gnocchi on a bed of warm sauerkraut and sauteed onions. I loved this dish because I'm a ravenous consumer of sauerkraut. I gave a few extra dumplings to my husband to soak up the pork gravy, and he was in heaven. We washed down our delicious lunch with some great beer for him and a lovely German rose for me. Definitely check this place out if you're visiting the area. read more

We had lunch here as part of our day trip to Heidelberg. It is hard to describe how interesting this place was. The front doors are a little challenging to maneuver thru, but it was with the effort. The ambience is not really like a thing I have seen. It gets darker as you get past the windows but we had a nice table with a view of the restaurant. We had a pastry dish that had meat in it that was cooked that way through the ages as to hide the meat on Friday's. (A religious reason) I had a beer with the meal and a small dessert of pudding with chocolate on it. I enjoyed the meal, although I could have been really hungry as well. read more

It was pretty obvious that the owner of the restaurant put in serious effort to maintain the traditional ambience of the place through artistic decorations. A very cosy ambience. I ordered the pork knuckle as well as the local dark beer. The pork knuckle was really huge and can definitely be shared between 2 people. Come here many times for beers and meals and I love it. The house beer is not brewed on site but the Palmbräu beer on tap and bottled is very good- I highly recommend Doppelbock Zornnickel for dark beer drinkers. As far as food, everything I have eaten has been good - pork knuckle, cheese spätzle, salad, French onion soup. Service here is always good. Traditional German fare done well. It feels like you're in a stone basement in the downstairs bar area which is fun. 4 tap beers and more in bottles. The slaw was excellent. Schnitzel "weiner Art" com Schwein was authentically done. The service is typical of Germany--not rushed but responsive as needed. This restaurant is extremely well located for tourists, right off the main square. Great place to stop and take a break from sightseeing. It has a charming old fashioned atmosphere and traditional- if limited and a bit overpriced- menu. We met two two other families here late on a Tuesday afternoon. Naturally the place was empty. We had a great waiter who patiently came multiple times to get all our orders as our group came in slowly. He brought he little ones crayons too. My husband has been here several times to meet old uni friends and swears by the Wienerschnitzel. I had the house specialty Schweinshaxe which was huge, tender and had a nice crust from the grill. Knoedel (big bread dumplings) went great but were extra. This place gets crazy on Saturdays when uni is in session thanks to it having a back door on the main drinking drag (untere Strasse). read more
