Six flags is a bunch of f*cking LIARS. El Toro is taller. And on top of that, Goliath is a steel/wooden hybrid.

David doesn't stand a chance. In the historical allegory, the human kicks the giant's ass with a stone & sling. In Great America's coaster adaptation, the giant kicks the human's ass with a dive loop & near-vertical drop. But is it the best coaster at Illinois' Six Flags? Some people might say so, but X-Flight still takes the cake in my opinion. Check out the impressive rap sheet for Goliath: ~Special ride elements~ *165ft chain lift at a 45° incline *180ft drop @ 85° into an underground tunnel *Overbanked fan turn *Dive loop *Zero-G stall *Overbanked fan turn Rocky Mountain Construction is responsible for designing and erecting this ride, having previously done stellar re-work on The Rattler (SFFT in San Antonio) and The Texas Giant (SFOT in Arlington). RMC is notorious for incorporating intense elements into their wooden coasters that are normally reserved for their steel counterparts, and Goliath is no exception. Navigating the dive loop gives some great visuals, and the zero-G stall is a very fun, very unique inversion that will undoubtedly get your pulse pounding. The first drop is great, but not quite as thrilling as the one on Iron Rattler, in my opinion. The trains are comfortable and the individual hydraulic lapbars (as opposed to ratcheting ones) give a nice sense of security. Expect to wait no less than 90 minutes on a normal day, as it's still the park's most popular coaster and limited to a 2-train operating cycle, but the single rider line is a HUGE help for coaster junkies like me. Station crews did an admirable job dispatching the trains in a timely manner. If I had one criticism, it'd be the ride's relatively short duration. It's an exhilarating 1 minute 45 seconds to be sure, although given the fact that this is a true 'hybrid' coaster (wooden supports, steel track) I can't put it in either of my Top 10 lists. An absolute must-ride on your trip to SFGAm, but beware of long lines!

Did this ride twice. Both in the back. And wow did the airtime come hard. Let alone even hang time on the stall. A small RMC coaster but man it packs a punch so don't come in with small expectations. It can really give itself a run for its money on its best coaster at the park

Goliath was so much fun! I'm usually not the kind of girl who *screams* during rides but this one made me because it was THAT good. And of course, we had to sit in the VERY FRONT. I had to experience that steep 'drop" no matter what! Especially if i was in line for almost an hr. Half way during the line, they experienced some technical difficulties which took another 20-30 mins on top of the original wait time. So upon entering, theres a guy passing out "boarding passes" to ensure no one cuts lines. When you get close to the end of the line before walking up to the ride, there's another guy collecting the passes in order. If you happen to be at 6 flags, you MUST wait in line and go on this ride! It will NOT disappoint you at all! That 2-3hr wait is well worth it! =) It was super fun, super scary and super fast!

I know I'm north of Chicago when people are rocking Cubs gear.

Gott damn! This thing is a shot of adrenaline right to the heart like Mia Wallace takes in Pulp Fiction. I've been seeing Rocky Mountain Construction fanboys salivating like cartoon wolves online ever since it low key got out that RMC is reworking the structure of Cedar Point's former Mean Streak into a roller coaster that people besides chiropractors will love and after riding Goliath I can see what the fuss is about. My curiosity was piqued upon laying my eyes upon the insane looking lift hill, with stunningly little in the way of supports, and a pretty steep angle of ascent to boot. The chain on that lift hill is nice and loud, too, adding to the sense of anticipation. The wait for this beast was made easier by old school Looney Tunes shown in the queue. Big points from me on that, Six Flags. Their incessant promotional tie-ins can be grating to me at times, but watching old Looney Tunes is always top notch, anvil-dropping good fun in my book. The first drop is intense and that intensity basically lasts through the whole ride. Intamin are probably still the kings of crazy twistiness in my book but RMC has some pretty damn interesting ideas of how roller coaster track can bend and aren't shy about implementing them. And Intamin can't even fuck with the crazy long inversion on this thing with only a lap bar to keep you in place. The hang time on that thing is almost deliriously fun. It's like you're speeding down the freeway and oh, let's just drive upside down for a stretch of road here! Goliath is very smooth to boot, smoother than I thought a wooden roller coaster could be. (Though some of those supports on the lift hill are clearly metal so I don't quite see how it qualifies.) The big knock on Goliath is that it's too short, clocking in at less than two minutes. Well, I can't disagree that I would like there to be more of it, but if that's the biggest problem with your roller coaster, you must be doing a few things right. It didn't even seem as short as I figured it would, and I had the mindset of savoring every second so I wasn't disappointed by it's brevity. Goliath seemed shorter when I watched a YouTube pov video of it, probably causing I wasn't really feeling it. What's it they say - it's not the length but the girth that matters? Goliath must have plenty of girth. (It's still just a ride, so relax about the metaphor here.) Go ride Top Thrill Dragster and complain to me how short Goliath is. This was my favorite coaster at SFGA - no slight to X-Flight, Eric S - and a most worthy hors d'oeuvres to whatever RMC is cooking up on a certain peninsula jutting out into Lake Erie.

Here is comes! Lots to go in a month to be the tallest steepest fastest in the world! (I believe they mean wooden one though).

Dear Gladiators, we need YOU to come join us as we battle with GOLIATH! Who cringes over wooden roller coasters? I do! Who takes that comment back forever now? I do! 4.5 hours later, as they worked out the maintenance issues, and we worried over weather warnings in line - we made it to the loading cues! I think this triple world record breaking coaster will actually rapidly be rated a 4th world record breaker voted as world's best ever wooden coaster of ALL time! Smooth, fun, AWESOME! Cheers!

That's me...front row...arms up the whole ride! Best coaster in the whole park.

RIDING THE BEAST The ride has had wait times up to 4 hours and it's well worth it. Dare I say this is the best ride in the park. Yesterday I got an early jump on everyone by arriving at 9:30am with the park opening at 11am. I was lucky enough to get to ride on the first train of the day and in the front row. My first recommendation is you must have arms up the whole time because it adds to the thrill. The first drop is simply amazing. You will feel like you have jumped out of an airplane as you fall face first to the ground. The ride just gets better from there. There is no shoulder harness, so you will be going upside down on a wooden roller coaster. Oh yeah this ride is the bomb right now. Luckily I didn't have to wait 4 hours but for the thrill I might just do it. I decided to ride all the other coasters after Goliath and my final judgement is this is the best coaster in the park. If you haven't ridden it, you only have a few more weekends in 2014. So get strapped in, lift those arms and enjoy the ride.

Scared the poop out of me. Truly a frightening drop at the beginning and a heart stopping outer loop. GREAT FUN.

3X THE FUN Triple…read morePlay is located in Hometown Square in between the train station and the season pass processing center. The ride opened in 1976 and was manufactured by HUSS Rides. It is also known as a Trokia, which means 'group of three' in Russian. The Triple Play has three arms extending out from a center column. Each of these cars can seat up to two people and are located at the end of every arm in a circle. Now the fun begins when the operator turns on the ride. The center column rotates in a clockwise motion while the cars located at the end of the arms rotate in a counterclockwise motion. I am getting dizzy just thinking about this ride and let's not forget the sweeping motion of the ride as it goes up and down. You will also notice a slight rocking motion of the car from side to side. Now my description sounds a lot worse then the ride actually is. In fact, this ride is quite mild. It is a great beginner ride for your little one as you slowly work your kids up to bigger and faster coasters. This is another one of those rides that I have ridden on as a child and with my child. It is always fun to share these childhood memories. The line may look long but it moves fast. If I do my math correctly 21 cars times 2 people means 42 people can potentially ride at one time. I also feel that many people miss this ride because it is tucked in the corner. Make sure to do not wait until the end of the night to ride this because it will shut down early to accommodate the evening stage show and the nightly parade. You have been warned. My little one loves this ride and it is always fun to ride with her on it. She laughs and giggles. It always cracks me up when she asks me to hold on to her. This ride only has a metal lap bar and it does feel like you might fly out as the ride goes into it's dropping motion. I was curious as to how many of these rides still exist. I was able to find out in the USA, there are at least eight Troikas in operation and they are located at Cedar Point, Palace Playland, Kings Island, Elitch Gardens, Kings Dominion, Fun Spot Amusement Park, Six Flags Great America, and Six Flags Over Texas. So get on board this classic Trokia ride and feel the spin.

FLYING HIGH The…read moreCondor opened in 1991 and is located in Orleans Place next to the Superman roller coaster and Rue le Dodge, which is French for bumper cars. It was relocated to Gurnee from Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. The ride was installed in 1988 at Six Flags Great Adventure and was one of the first of three production models to appear in the US. The ride is manufactured by HUSS of Bremen, Germany. HUSS introduced the ride in 1984 at the World's Fair in New Orleans and it was called the Cyclo Tower. Unfortunately it spent most of its time closed because of operating problems. It took an additional 4 years of re-engineering before the ride was put into production. Six Flags purchased two of the rides and had planned to use the condor as part of its ride rotation program. It was an idea for parks to have new rides each year at a reduced cost of purchasing a new ride for the parks. Luckily for us it landed in Gurnee and never flew away. The ride is a 112 foot tower and offers amazing views of the park and parking lot. I love going up to the top and looking for my car. My little one just loves this ride and it never gets old to her. We have been riding on it together since she has been tall enough. It is a great family attraction because riders can sit together. One child can sit in front of you in each car between your legs and they will feel safe and secure. It reduces their stress level making them feel protected. The ride was designed to be programmed for various speed cycles but at Six Flags it only has two. The normal operation during the year and a version during Fright Fest where it slows down at the top. I wish that Six Flags would actually utilize the programming and make the ride more of an adventure. Riders would never know if there next ride was going to be fast or slow or in reverse. Let's mix it up because we have the technology. At night this is one of the best rides in the park to look at. It says fun and carnival as it lights up the night sky. If you are attracted to the ride then that is a good thing. The lighting was designed for the "European Fair Circuit" where rides compete against each other to sell tickets. The flashier the ride the more people wanted to ride it. Luckily for me it's included in my season pass or my little one would have cleaned out my wallet. There are 28 gondolas all painted to resemble a condor. Riders climb in as two riders or they can ride solo. In addition to an added seat belt there is an original pneumatic air pressure sliding gate. I love informing my little one that when I was a kid there were no added safety features like seat belts. Thanks a lot insurance companies. It freaks her out and she often asks why I never flew out. The ride has a dual rotation as it moves up the tower. It is fun to watch but even more fun to ride. There is also a tilting motion of the gondolas when it reaches the outer part of its rotation. It makes you feel like you are actually turning. We love riding the condor and a trip to Six Flags would not be complete if we didn't jump on board for a whirl. My little one and I often make a bird noise like "Ca-cow" as we spin to the top. It is one of those traditions that I hope she shares with her children one day.
