Twisted Limits was a super cool experience. The entire thing was perfect from start to finish. We really appreciated how there was a lounge with billiards, arcade games and corn hole. We tried "The Passage" room and I don't want to spoil it, but there were multiple rooms and even a water feature built in. You could tell that they put a ton of work into the room(s), from the build quality to the complexity of the clues. Joe, one of the owners, was very generous with clues and talked to us afterwards about the new rooms he will be setting up. My family had so much fun! We did "behind the curtain" and it was extremely cool. The props and set were super immersive; there were a lot of physical props and different kinds of puzzles. We were all beginners (we'd done one escape room before and had to do it twice since we didn't finish the first time) and we were able to solve it (with hints, of course). I'm by no means an escape room connoisseur, but after having done a good handful under my belt, I've learned to appreciate well done escape rooms. This one falls under impressive. The puzzles are very unique. The storyline and room are immersive (my group had done another room, and while the gamemaster was telling us the story to our room, he kept referring to our previous story like we're just continuing on with our next part of our story--loved the continuity). Puzzles aren't all based on locks like many are. Production value is high. Our gamemaster stepped in to guide us when necessary and were definitely attentive to how we were doing. Super positive and enthusiastic at the end when doing our wrap ups. During our wrap ups, he did mention that there have been other groups that struggled and weren't pleased with their experience. This isn't the stereotypical lock and key/code escape room. It really does require collaboration, critical thinking, memorization. It's definitely an experience to be appreciate. My advice, if you're really struggling, take the hints! Oh, and snacks and beverages are complimentary! read more

I've been to about 5 escape rooms now and the one I did at Twisted Limits is still my favorite! It is independently run, so it doesn't have that "corporate" feel about it. Without giving too much away, there isn't a dependency on locks and the puzzles are very unique!!! There was also some physical motion required that was VERY unique. When we saw "it," we were all very excited and yelling out "wow!!!!" The room we did definitely was unique and you can tell the guys who put it together did so with pride and creativity. I was very impressed. The waiting area is also impressive...they are VERY nice and offer free snacks, drinks...lots of couches to hang out on while you wait, etc. The one negative would be the game master's offering of hints without being asked for hints, but you could easily ask them not to provide hints until you yell out for help before you start. Super nice guy running it; our group ending up staying for quite some time just conversing with him. I'm sad to see some of the bad/disappointed reviews on here. My experience couldn't have been more of a polar opposite! It was so unique and creative. I actually plan on returning within the next couple of weeks. read more

This is by far the best and most detailed escape room in Lake or McHenry county. Their attention to detail is above the rest. Been to a dozen different rooms in about half dozen places and this is the best by far. Have done two of their rooms and they are fantastic. If you were thinking about going here don't wait. No other word to describe this place besides AMAZING! I wish I could give 6 stars! I've been to some escape rooms on vacations and one other local place. Those were "fun". My9 and 4 year olds beg to go to these kinds of places. This particular escape room, Twisted Limits, is by far the best escape room we've been to yet. WOW! Very nice work! If you have a small group that is looking for a unique experience try Twisted Limits Escape Rooms. We have been here twice now and tried "Behind the Curtain " and "The Passage". There are always enough clues to keep the game moving. Working together with other players is a lot of fun. The rooms are so amazing in the attention to detail. The creativity of the rooms themselves are so impressive. The staff are helpful and will step in to assist if you are a beginner. The rooms are challenging but not intimidating. I have to say I was very impressed with the owners first and foremost! I had mentioned my youngest with Aspergers night not be able to participate (honestly I can't believe I doubted him, he was a superstar!) and the owner told us to bring him along. I am so glad we did, he found clues we didn't know were there and he had a blast (he was loud, oops! He was trying to be heard!) but he had a blast. The rest of us had a lot of fun also! Everything takes you by surprise and makes you want to come back for more. It's really entertaining and if you think it's only for adults, you're wrong! It's GREAT for young kids. My son is 7 and was great at it (I wish we listened to him more!) what an awesome way to support local businesses. We need more of these fun activities around here. Thanks again! read more

I have experienced all the rooms here and have even brought groups back so that they could experience them too as the rooms are just that good. What sets Twisted Limits apart from other Escape Rooms first off their customer service. Your experience truly starts at the door as you are warmly welcomed and provided with many places to gather and hangout prior to going into your escape room. They even provide complimentary snacks and beverages. Once in the rooms, you will see how Twisted Limits has gone above and beyond the competition to create an immersive feel for each room. The puzzles are creative and go far beyond the "lock-centric" style of many of the other escape rooms I have experienced in the area. Had a terrible experience. First the place was locked up tight when we showed up for our pre-booked room, then it took half an hour for anyone to show up to let us in. We were just waiting in the parking lot for half an hour, and no one in my group was notified that anyone was even going to show up. Then when a person finally arrived there was no explanation as to why they were so late. Because of the lateness, everything was rushed. Then while we were in the room the man running the place started yelling at our group over the wall. Sometimes it was extra clues (which was off putting and really took away from the immersive experience), then when a couple of the girls in the group (who I would guess were around 15) couldn't figure out one of the clues the man yelled, "Let the men do it!" He also yelled at one of the 15 year old girls, "Sit your ass down!" when she was trying to figure out another clue. After we were done I waited until everyone else left (I didn't want to color anyone else's experience) and went up to the man running the place (who I later learned was a co-owner) and told him I had a bad experience and the reasons why. Rather than apologizing or politely thanking me for my input and letting me leave, I was met with a smirk, denial, and was told to look at the online reviews for how amazing Twisted Limits is. At this point I didn't know if this man was an owner or just a terrible employee, so I emailed the business to try to alert them of the bad experience I had so they could know how their business was being run. I am part of a small business and would NEVER treat my customers this way and was astonished at the reaction to me sharing my experience. Upon emailing my complaints to the owners I received a ridiculously long response giving me excuses as to why everything occurred the way it did. While I appreciate the effort put into responding, the response was almost as maddening as talking to the man in person. There was no overall assumption of responsibility because the business as whole screwed up. It was a lot of "I'm sorry your perception of what happened was negative." This was the flavor (and a quote from) the emailed reply: "He does have a tendency to shout over the walls with hints and comments. It's not something that I typically do. A lot of times he will do it to inject some humor and personality into things. In my opinion, it depends on the group. I can't recall any groups that have taken any major issue with it. At the same time, I cannot speak for his methods/actions/etc. It is not my place to apologize for him, but I do apologize that his interaction and comments were off-putting to you particularly." I was then, again, referred to the online reviews of Twisted Limits. And told how they donate money to the community (which I guess was supposed to make me see how they're really nice people and my experience was wrong?‍). For anyone still reading and wondering - the two people that I dealt with were the co-owners: Keith (man running the room and the snarky frat boy I think mentioned in the other low review) and Jo (email response). Twisted Limits - if I can give you one piece of advice it is to take your customer's complaints seriously and don't be condescending in your response. Your business is built on its reputation and I tell EVERYONE I know that is thinking about going to your place NOT to go. You were rude, disrespectful and snobby. I wanted to give this place a higher rating because the kids and dads had so much fun playing laser tag here. I've had friends asking me how they can book. However, when they arrived they were met with a grumpy staff who proceeded to be rude to my husband and group. The impression was that kids were not welcome and defiantly on their last nerve. We had 12 people 9 kids from 7-11. we paid over 300 dollars for our time. due to the rain the building was flooding and not all areas weee available. Totally understandable but when met with such rudeness I do want to mention it. At one point he told a joke that he would kick their asses out if they don't listen up. What kind of business swears to kids! Again I would have been ok but when I emailed to ask what happened and get clarification on the behavior I was told the Kids were near out of control. At no point did he approach one of the adults to ask them to talk to the kids or calm them down. The kids were so excited! Some of them had never played before. I would not recommend bringing kids to this location! Go to a location that understands children and treat customers with respect! read more

I've played a lot of escape games at a number of different places, and have far more wins than loses. In all that experience, I can confidently say that Twisted Limits stands out, and not in a good way. I've played two rooms at Twisted Limits, and theirs are the only escape games I've ever played where it really felt like the game master and designer weren't on my side, that they didn't want me to succeed. Puzzles can (and should) be challenging, but at NO point in any room should players feel so confused and lost that they just throw their arms up and say, "You know what, I give up." If your players get to that point, they just aren't having fun. And both times I've played Twisted Limits, I've reached that point. That's a pretty poor reflection on the game masters and designers. Along the same lines, solutions should always make sense, even if it's only in retrospect. I'm of the opinion that if a player, upon hearing the solution to a puzzle, ever says, "OK, I would never ever have come up with that." that's not a great puzzle. It's totally fine if a player can't figure something out and then afterwards has it explained and shouts, "OMG! OF COURSE!" Sadly, in my experience, Twisted Limits' puzzles too often fall into the first category. And finally, both times I've played their games, I've also encountered a fair amount of taunting and shouting over the game room walls from the game master. Definitely not the experience I'm looking for. And definitely highlights my main point: the game masters and designer are NOT on your side. Skip Twisted Limits. Go to 60 to Escape in Gurnee instead. Their puzzles are challenging but fun, and the game masters are 100% on your side. :) read more

I have been to a couple escape rooms now and have a good idea of what good and bad escape rooms look like. Twisted limits was a great escape room. It was my first ever and nothing has come close to the realistic feel of the executive disorder escape room. I felt like I was in the governor of Illinois office. We did not escape the room in the 60 minutes l, but the man working ,part owner, let us finish. He was an overall good guy and you can see how much he enjoyed people coming to try to solve his escape room. I would definitely recommend twisted limits for anyone who loves escape rooms. One extra bonus, they have snacks and drinks that are complementary for customers to enjoy before they attempt to escape. read more

Love this place and the owners. Such a great thing to have in Mchenry. We have done all 3 rooms and can not wait for them to add more. They have a room in the back that you can go early and hang out. So - had a great time with the family at this escape room a couple of months ago. We were warmly received when we arrived - they had some snacks and such in the waiting area before you go in the room. The "facilitators" gave us the scoop before we went in. I don't want to disclose anything about the room, but it was good. We were challenged and had to work as a team. We were able to solve this one with only a couple of minutes to spare, although I think they said that the percentage finishing was pretty low. The room itself was a little artificial in that the walls didn't go all the way to the ceiling, so we were aware of people in other rooms. Despite this, we still had a great time and would do it again. read more

We've done a few of these before, but this one is hands down the best. Puzzles are good and fair and diverse for different intelligence types. The iPad hints don't feel like hints and are immersive. First time in an escape room and had a blast! It was challenging and super fun. My husband normally doesn't get into games or puzzle solving, but as soon as we got in the car he turned to me and asked when we could go back. And we will definitely go back! The owner is awesome. We were put with a group that had an unhappy member (but it didn't ruin our fun). He very nicely acknowledged the issue and wanted to make things right even though we felt there was no need. Like I said, even though we didn't solve the puzzle completely, we had a blast trying. We learned a lot and are prepared for the next ones. So much fun!! We've been to many escape rooms and this one is by far our favorite! They have a fun waiting area with games and snacks to keep you entertained if you arrive early. The room was challenging and entertaining the whole way through. And the hosts took extra time to chat with us before and after about certain clues we did well on or struggled with. They mentioned that the story line through all of their rooms is kind of connected so we will definitely be going back for more! read more

We had a great experience. Seven of us did the "Behind the Curtain" escape room and managed to beat it with 2.75 second left. It was challenging, but exciting. You definitely need everyone to work together and keep moving to make progress. If one thing doesn't work, just try something else and eventually it will all come together. read more

It is 2.5 years after my first review of Twisted Limits and we just got finished with their 4th room. We have done all 4 now and although Executive Disorder will always have a special place in my heart because it was our first room here....this place just keeps getting better and better! My best friend and I have done a total of 57 escape rooms now and this continues to be one of our favorite places. The owners, Keith and Joe, are just hard-working, awesome people trying to create the best escape adventure that you can imagine and they are making it happen! Twisted limits was my first escape room experience. The staff and environment really made it an enjoyable experience. My group did Executive Disorder. We were a group of three so it was more challenging to complete all of the tasks within an hour. I would recommend groups with between 4-6 people. Everything in the room was set up well and realistic. I enjoyed the more advanced hidden secrets that you may not expect. This place has fueled my interest in escape rooms and I have already planned my next trip! read more

I have done both of the rooms that are currently open. It very challenging and fun. Our group was just short of completing the first one and completed the second with a minute to spare.
