I'm brand new to soccer for the 2023 Fall season, and so are my kids. As an all volunteer…read moreorganization, the experience is likely to vary from year to year, but I've found this organization to be well run and lots of fun. It's true that you will have to volunteer, but I've found that only makes it more enjoyable. The referee training was great, but it is a bit of a slog to get through all of the HR training. But it's a quality program (about harassment, bullying, etc) and as someone who's run several companies and had to implement programs for hundreds of people, these are top-notch, worthwhile and I definitely learned things. I'm hoping my kids continue next year into the 12U league.

You can't beat Santa Monica AYSO (Region 20) for a low-cost, high quality, community youth soccer…read moreexperience. It is a true non-profit organization, run entirely by volunteers. It's like a "co-op" -- everyone pitches in to create a fun and rewarding experience for all of our kids. I speak from experience, having had two kids go through Santa Monica AYSO for many years and then move on to play at a very high level in two different local Clubs. I can tell you that our time in Santa Monica AYSO was the absolute best years we had in soccer. Our volunteer coaches have been dedicated and knowledgeable. They give their time to coach because they love soccer and love teaching kids. Because it's a local, community organization, your child will make friends with other local sporty kids. We, as parents, have also made great friends through AYSO. Because AYSO is the largest non-profit youth sports organization in Santa Monica (with over 1000 players), it has priority for the very limited field space in Santa Monica, so ALL your games and practices are conveniently located in Santa Monica. We found that SM AYSO grew with our kids as they became better players. The fantastic, fun Fall ("Core") program is for everyone. Don't expect it to run like an Amazon distribution center since it's a communal lift from hundreds of volunteers to run a program for over 1000 kids, but it always comes together and the kids have the time of their lives. More competitive players can play a second season in the Spring, where teams play fun AYSO tournaments around Southern Cal. (The kids love these!). There is also a year-around elite program called EXTRA for the top players, which is very similar to a Club soccer experience. There are tryouts to make this top team (there is only one team from each birth year) and the Santa Monica team plays the EXTRA teams from other Regions (like Beverly Hills, Culver City, Pacific Palisades, Palos Verdes, etc). Santa Monica AYSO traditionally fields very strong EXTRA teams, and those players typical move to Clubs when they are older (around 14U when soccer goes to 11 v. 11 players). EXTRA players are highly coveted and recruited by the top Clubs. If you have young kids and you live in Santa Monica/West LA, there is no better place for them to start their soccer journey in a positive, fun environment than AYSO Region 20. The Clubs will always be there and will be happy to take your money ($3000-4000 per season + uniforms, travel, referee fees, etc) when your kids get older. If your kid wants to play high school/college soccer, eventually you will need to move them to Club (I'd recommend at 14U). But you might as well enjoy, and let your kids, enjoy soccer for a few years first! To avoid some of the logistical problems that frustrated parents in reviews from years ago, here's my advice: (1) Sign up ON TIME. Registration for the Fall season opens around May or June and runs through August. The program is always low-cost (around $300 a season, including uniforms, trophies & photos), and there are even discounts for signing up early. Don't wait to register until the season starts in September and then complain that your kid is on a waitlist. That's an avoidable mistake by those parents. But you won't make that mistake because you are now in the know! (2) Volunteer/Get Involved. You don't have to be a uber-volunteer for your kid to participate in AYSO, but what you put into AYSO will correlate to what you get out of it. Lean in, get trained to coach or referee (it's free and local), and get ready to have some fun and make some of the most special memories you will ever make with your child.

Coach Andrew is amazing with the kids! Andrew is kind and knowledgeable about the sport and encourages their development and confidence in their skills. It's evident he really loves the kids and teaching soccer. The kids are having so much fun! They seem to have endless energy running, passing, kicking goals and making friends. Every morning they warm up by running on the beach in the open air. What could be better ?! It's so great to see the kids grow and learn new skills without the pressure of traditional team sports. It's such a beautiful relaxed atmosphere and the weather is great!!! Sign your kids up. You won't regret it!!! Your children will have a blast!

My son's field "vision" and overall confidence on the ball has improved significantly as playing on the sand has forced him to lift his head and use lofted passes while also working on his aerial control. While the camps are technically and physically demanding for all ages they still find time to cool off at the water's edge or go for the occasional swim. Aiden can't wait to join them again this summer.  Thank you
