I have to echo all the rave reviews for Janet and the variety of classes offered through Good Dog. Like others have said, she changed our lives and our relationship with our dog. We learned so many important things through her private training and the puppy socialization course. She turned our puppy into our friend who turned into a family member who turned into our first child! Within the first week of receiving our Beabull puppy (3/4 English Bulldog, 1/4 Beagle) two years ago, she began to behave obnoxiously dominant. She would attack my ankles any time we would play, if we tried to hold her down to show our dominance she would NEVER tire of scratching our arms until they were bloodied and bruised, she would do the opposite of everything we asked/showed, and she humped me all the time. There were times that I would cry on the couch because of her behavior, and times my husband confessed that coming home felt like more work than his actual job because of he could never just relax with our dog acting out nonstop. Janet came to our home and made our jaws drop, as her presence changed our dog's behavior immediately. She never lost her patience and taught me how to assert dominance easily. Her guidance rewards good behavior and helped us feel mounds more confident when faced with difficult moments. Our frustration decreased steadily and our pup slowly began to treat us with respect and love. She stopped attacking my heels within a day, and let us hold her down/put our hands in and on her mouth/ears/paws quickly. The humping has stopped over time and she listens very well. I never cried because of my dog after we were helped by Janet. I also recommend so highly the Puppy Socialization class. Aside from our wee one learning sit, down, shake, stay, come and how to walk on a leash better, she made some puppy friends and overcame her shyness around bigger dogs by the end of the course. We were also introduced to the agility/games course which was SO MUCH FUN! We noticed a big change in our dog's confidence and also loyalty to us as we built our bond through training. Additionally, all the staff seems very in tune with each dogs individual needs and never let anyone feel embarrassed or unwelcome because of a misbehavior. Good Dog Training was the catalyst for positive behavior with our dog. Janet Smith, owner of Good Dog! Training is AMAZING! We have put both of our dogs through her training classes and there is just no way we could be happier. One of our pups is extremely stubborn and the other one is quite shy and reacts by barking. She knew exactly how to handle each dog's "special" personality trait. We did a class format for training, although she does do private lessons. We loved the class format!!!! She really personalizes it for YOUR dog. I learned a lot about each dog in the class and how to treat my own dogs based on their breeds because they could have different needs and if you address them properly it makes your life easier and much more enjoyable! Top 10 favorite things about Janet Smith and Good Dog! Training: (Yes, I love this business SO much that I have compiled a list!!) 10. Your dogs will learn from other people! Yes, I said that, it sounds strange but it is important. It is important for you dog to learn basic commands: sit, stay, come, lay down, etc. But your dog may only obey you. This could be problematic in the long run. One of the best things about Janet is that she nips this potential problem in the bud. In class, you "trade" dogs. You will be giving commands to another owner's dog and they will be giving commands to your dog. It is sort of like square dancing. In just one class, your dog will have listened to and obey commands from every adult in the room. And she does this for most of the classes. Now my dogs obey the basic commands from anyone. (This is also a great thing for puppies because they need the socialization!!!) 9. While some people are harsh with, refuse to work with, or chastise people for having a "bully breed" (i.e. pitbulls, personally not my kind of dog but some people love them and are good owners and some people are just not good owners which lead to not so great dogs). She embraces these dogs in a special way by having a class just for them to address their personalities, she is always turning your negatives into a positive. 8. She has all kinds of classes that tailor to your dogs needs!!! (Shy dogs, Bullies, Barkers, and Snarlers) 7. She has FUN classes for your dog (Agility, Nose Games, and Treibball) 6. Her general classes are the best place to start in my opinion (they are the best in all of the Lansing area!) and if she realizes you are in the wrong class she will put you into the appropriate class. (She is a like a doggy diagnostician). 5. Her prices are totally comparable with big box stores training places (i.e. Petsmart) but she has way more experience and you get a lot more for your money with Good Dog! 4. Her schedule is great, she is always moving it around after the "semesters" end so you will be able to have a class at a day and time that works for you! And she is all over! She teaches in Lansing, Haslett, and sometimes Mason! 3. She believes in positive reinforcement and not scare tactics to train your dog!! 2. Her advice ALWAYS pans out! ALWAYS! I say this because whenever my fiance and I decided to do something our own way, we were proved wrong by our dogs attitudes. When we tried Janet's training methods or suggestions and really stuck to them, we saw a totally different dog. And the most AMAZING thing about Janet Smith? Drum Roll.... 1. She really loves all her students through and through. She has an unwritten rule and it is "once a student, always a student." And she means it! We have emailed her way after our classes were over and she gave us advice and told us what to do in specific situations. She even offered to have us come to a class just as a drop in, for free! Seriously! We have friends, the ones who recommended her to us, who put their golden through her good dog training 1 class and a year and half later they emailed her and she gave them advice about something regarding their dog. So we know it isn't just us. She really cares and stands by her training. By choosing Janet Smith, Good Dog! Training you are really honestly making an investment and it pays off. Just do me a favor and do not abuse the privilege because if I need help down the line, I want to know that she is just an email away! I cannot say enough positive things about Good Dog! Training and Janet Smith. Janet helped our family train not one but two dogs. We started attending her classes shortly after we got our first dog, Xander. In addition to the normal puppyish exuberance, Xander had a lot of issues with separation anxiety. Not only did Janet help us learn how to work with him to burn off energy and develop a relationship, she also gave us strategies for how to deal with his separation anxiety. Xander has been through four of Janet's classes and we continue to work with him on his Agility skills. When we got our second dog, Anya, we had a few more issues. Anya had been abused in her former homes and had a tendency to get aggressive. Janet came to our house to do a one on one consultation. I credit her with helping us repair our relationship with our dog. She helped our family through a real rough patch. Anya now curls up next to us and eagerly awaits belly rubs (this from a dog who used to snarl at us if we looked at her funny). I learned of Good Dog! Training and Janet Smith from a friend shortly after one of my two dogs had passed away from Canine Lymphosarcoma. My other dog was grieving terribly and I was at a loss as to what to do. A friend of mine contacted Janet to ask for some guidance. Janet responded immediately with helpful advice and support. She did this despite the fact that I live in Plymouth, MA and there is no way I'll ever have the opportunity to bring my pups to her for training (I wish I lived closer!). Janet reached out to help us during a difficult time, without any business-related hidden agenda - just a sincere dedication to improving the life a dog and her family. Since then, Janet has assisted me in my search for a Dutch Shepherd puppy. She's been incredibly helpful, and is quite obviously very knowledgeable and dedicated to her profession, the dogs, and the people she works with. She's helped me to better understand the Dutch Shepherd breed (they're a high energy, hardworking breed that loves to be challenged, but can easily get in trouble if not properly motivated), and plan for the next pup accordingly. As I watch videos of Janet working with her Dutch Shepherd puppy, Moon, I'm amazed by the bond she's developing with this young pup. Janet is seriously a dog whisperer. I was in tears daily with my golden retriever puppy who had out of control mouthing issues. I had her come to my house for a private session, and she turned our lives around. I'm finishing my first class with her (6 week course) and I plan on taking as many courses as I possibly can. What can I say about Good Dog Training? Nothing but great things. I have a 10 Month old German Shepherd and he has been training with Good Dog Training since he was 6 weeks old. We've completed just about every class. Janet and her kind caring staff remember not just the dogs' names but also their personalities, likes and dislikes. Training is gentle, positive and a fun experience. My dog gets such a great physical, mental and social workout. Most importantly, Janet truly cares about her clients and the dogs she's training. Janet and her team are top notch! In group classes, they still do a spectacular job of addressing individual issues and needs. They help owners feel more at ease with their pets, and truly know their business through and through. The things we learned in class make life with a dog even that much more amazing. I love the point Janet made of the need for every dog to get out of the house and off property for at least a few minutes each day, so they're not on "house arrest".
