When I walk in I have to resist the urge to start chewing at the walls just to see whether this shop is actually made of chocolate. So, it is a relatively small premise, but simply filled to the brim. Mainly this shop sells individual chocolates; cream filled, praline, nougat, dusted, dark and many more. They also sell a section of Thortons chocolates as well. Because I came in near Christmas there was plenty of Christmas gifts, such as chocolate Santa's and snowmen. I'm sure Easter is just as well represented. This is also a prefect place to pick up gifts. There are walls of chocolate gift boxes, ranging in size from a few chocs to around a hundred. Built in 1866, Peek Frean and Co's biscuit factory gave Bermondsey the nickname 'Biscuit Town' for popular creations that included the bourbon and the Garibaldi. It employed generations of local residents. A Southwark resident who voted for a blue plaque, said: Peek Freans was on my way to school - each morning, walking along Drummond Road, it would be a guessing game. What was being made today? Sweet or savoury? In summer the doors of the factory would be open and you could see the people in white aprons packing the biscuits. The sight, the sound and the smell, it was Bermondsey! The Peek Frean and Co biscuit factory provided Bermondsey and Rotherhithe with a major source of employment until it closed in 1989 and for decades the area was known as Biscuit Town. James Peek and George Hender Frean built the factory in 1866 and the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 brought the company to prominence, when ten million fine navy biscuits were ordered for the troops. Celebrated lines invented by Peek Freans include the Garibaldi (1861), Marie (1875), Chocolate Table (the first chocolate coated biscuit in 1899) and the Bourbon (1910). With the cocktail age came Cheeselets and Twiglets in the 1930s. The company pioneered the supply of medical, dental and optical services to their staff as well as founding clubs ranging from athletics and cricket to music and drama. Staff magazines including The Biscuit Box and PF Assorted also brought together a workforce which numbered 4,000 by the 1940s. Peek Freans biscuits can still be purchased in the United States and Canada Odd fact: The Peek Frean factory in Toronto is located in Bermondsey Road. They also made Queen Elizabeth II's almost two-metre tall (six feet) wedding cake. It's also the factory that invented the Twiglet!

They stock every kind of sweet imaginable from hotel chocolat style chocolate bars, bricks and truffles to popping candy, penny sweets, lollipops, boiled sweets, nougat, raisins... if it belongs in a sweet shop, you will find it here. There are often queues of children lurking around, eyes wide with pleasure at the vast shelves full of treats that await them! Such treats come at a price. I'm not sure whether I remember penny sweets as correctly being a penny when I was a child (i think some of them had migrated to two pence by then!) but it is a tad expensive. Anyway, the treats are tasty - just save your pennies before visiting!

Ahoy! There's a new…read moreconfectioner in (Greenwich) town ... and it's Mr Simms. Not a brand new enterprise as there are other Mr Simms' dotted around the country and not the largest (I have popped in to one in Windsor that was larger) but none-the-less a quality addition to the Greenwich scene. Only small really, you'll enter the shop and the centre of the room is a vacant space for perusing and queueing while the two side walls and behind the counter are lined floor to ceiling with chocolate, fudge, boiled sweets, lollies, marshmallows - really every variety of sweet you can think of and too many differing flavours of each to mention here. I picked up 2 Wham bars (they had 4 flavours in all), a bag of Raspberry and Kiwi boiled sweets and other such delights. I decided against a giant bubblegum flavoured cable and rued that decision later. As great a satisfaction as it is to buy bags of sugary wonderment for taste alone there was also a great feeling of nostalgia as I slowly made my way around gazing at all that was on show, being as wide-eyed as I'd ever been and just imagining how they all tasted. The only disappointment coming from the realisation that I can't take it all with me and I must choose a small selection and be content with that. Which I was, dentists aren't cheap y'know. With disappointment seen off, it was time to make some choices. The whole time I was in there, the soundtrack to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was playing. Mr Simms gets my vote over other similar sweet havens, like Cyber Candy, as they provide a superior quality of sweet and are also cheaper. A lot cheaper. I Love Mr Simms. They offer Pick 'n' Mix, imported sweets, handmade chocolates, drinks, souvenir chocolates and sweets and a few other magical things. It is, undoubtedly, a great sweet shop but it's just a little over expensive for my liking. It would highly benefit from being just a little bit cheaper, especially as some of their products can be bought in local supermarkets for less than half of the price they sell them at. Beside the pricing they do offer some really interesting and rare sweets. If you enter with a child then take this as a warning, you will need a big wallet!
