What you really need to understand is: There's no such thing as 'Good Neighbor Fencing'. There's no crew, there's no real company; there's just Chad. All Chad wants is your deposit money, and once he gets it, all bets are off. A workday from Chad typically looks like: he shows up at 10:30, he leaves by 4:30, and he takes over an hour for lunch. Just him, no one else. When he bothers to show, if he bothers to show. Chad will also ignore you, promise to show up and then repeatedly ditch work without notice, work as little as one day a week, ignore instructions, cut utility lines, apparently deliberately, if they're in his way (the TDS repair guy certainly thought so), cause serious property damage, screw up your fence design, waste or damage fence parts requiring endless deliveries of new materials, leave trash all over your land, play hooky to work on side cash gigs for your neighbors and eventually, if you annoy him by asking him to get down to work and actually fulfill the contract, he will quit, ghost you and disappear with your deposit money entirely. In my case, this meant almost having the fence repossessed by the train depot because Chad failed to arrange its pickup when it was delivered to them; not getting the fence installed last December when the contract specified because Chad took so long to get it on my site that the ground froze; waiting four months for Chad to actually start in spring; spending five weeks trying, and failing, to get him to competently finish even a major portion of the fence; then having him immediately quit the job when I tried to put some boundaries on the project in the middle of week *six*. For reference, in our contract, Chad promised to do it in *one* week. Chad also promised I'd be his top priority, then openly told me he was abandoning my job, over and over, to do other work, including, in one memorable instance, for my own neighbor. As of this review I'm looking at having to sue Chad to recover that deposit and possibly to cover all the damages and delays I've suffered, assuming he has any actual assets to go after. I've had to hire another company to replace him and will have to cover the double installation costs as well as any repair costs in the meantime. Chad, aka "Good Neighbor Fencing", is the worst, most unscrupulous, most outright dangerous contractor I've ever had the displeasure of working with. You should learn from my mistake and avoid him at all costs. Terrible!! I am trying to connect with as many people as possible to file complaints so we can get this man out of business. The fence (a project that should've been about a week has lasted over a month and it's not due to weather). The level of disrespect to both my property and me is unbelievable. This has been a horrible experience! Good Neighbor Fencing Chad has taken my money and left me with an unfinished fence (crooked, and you can shake the post) despite payment being rendered. Chad breached our contract, left trash at my house (came back to pick up his equipment he left behind, walked past the trash and left it behind), had employee dump dirt on city property despite the contract saying it should go in my yard specifically under my deck and would not respond to any email or text. Contacted the Dept. of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, he lied to them. Please reach out and voice your complaints, the more we share the more they can do. THEY NEED TO KNOW THE ISSUES WE ARE HAVING!!! There is power in numbers. No one should be treated this way! No one. Example of Chad's lies and lack of follow through. DO NOT HIRE CHAD SWARTZELL!!!! This man is a CON-ARTIST. He was very eager to take our money and quite responsive when he was attaining our deposit, however, once he got our money trying to get in touch with him was like herding cats. We hired him prior to closing on our house in May of 2023, as he stated if we did not put down the deposit then, a fence would not be finished until the end of August. Chad stated if we put down the deposit prior to closing, he would have the fence finished by June 15th. Chad started on the fence two weeks late, and on the very first day he drilled directly into the marked electrical line and severed our internet, leaving us without power and without internet. My partner was in the middle of a virtual presentation in which he then lost a multi-thousand-dollar contract because it was completely dropped mid-pitch. Next thing we know, there are 6 emergency MG&E vehicles surrounding our house. Chad was trying to laugh this off, saying, "Whoops! These things happen sometimes." Meanwhile, the MG&E staff was telling us that someone could have died from Chad's "whoops." All the commotion led to some conversations with our new neighbors. One of the neighbors had waited several months for Chad to finish their fence and another neighbor still had orange snow fence up where Chad had not yet placed her gate, 7 months later. This is all coming from a man who promises to have your fence completed within three days. The weeks went by. Delays kept happening. We were having to walk our dog several times a day (which was our main reason for needing the fence). Chad would not respond to texts or emails, and then would randomly show up at all hours of the day, looking crazed and strung out, and just start sawing metal in the middle of our yard. I told my partner, "He's going to accidentally kill himself on our property, and we are going to be liable for it." Chad left opened bags of cement, garbage, random tools, all strewn about our yard. The materials for our fence sat in our driveway for 6+ weeks. He had no consideration for our property or us as paying customers. As the months went on, we started to get more and more frustrated. There wasn't progress being made on the fence, there was no end-date in sight, there was no communication. At this point, Chad stopped including me on the group texts, cutting me out and only updating my partner. Chad is a sexist, misogynist, unkind human and I pray no one else hires this man. For weeks, we were added to the club on our circle with orange snow fence while waiting for gates. Three months after Chad nearly blew up our home and started our project, he was FINALLY ready for the last step. The latches. Chad wanted me to pay him prior to him putting the latches on (see attached photos). After his history of unreliability, I refused. Chad then called me irrational (so professional) and refused to finish our fence. All because I would not hand the check over beforehand. I knew if I had done that, our fence would never be completed. I was adamant that we should not send a check to Chad, however, my partner insisted. He was truly concerned that if we did not send a check to Chad, this crazy man would retaliate in some way against our house, our children, or myself. Chad cashed our check, yet we still have no latches, and our gate is being held closed with bungee cords. We live in a very new development, and approval from our HOA design team is required prior to any fence building. We have notified our HOA design team of these experiences, and they will now inform anyone coming to them with a request for a fence from Good Neighbor Fencing or Chad Swartzell to STRONGLY reconsider. Would not recommend working with Chad. We had a fence installed in fall 2021. During the fence install, Chad hit lines in 2 different spots, hitting a cable line and a power line, despite hand digging posts. At first, after receiving evidence of the damages, he agreed to pay for the damages. Then he stopped responding to us and we ultimately had to go through small claims, which is ongoing. He has so far refused to reimburse for damages. (if you look up court records, it appears we are not the only ones who have been put in this position. consider that part of your research). His communication was poor through the process. We were told it would be 4-6 weeks for supplies from when we gave the green light. The agreement given gave us an install date of 9/15. The fence was installed about 4 weeks after that, though he did not communicate with us about the push back. He is difficult to track down and does not respond to texts and emails. The fence itself looks nice, but it was a very disappointing and extremely frustrating experience which we would recommend to no one. You might get the lowest pricing around, but Chad does not back his own product and we would have gladly spent an extra $1000 to not deal with the run around and poor service that comes with Good Neighbor Fencing. read more

Where do I even start? Chad is uncommitted, uncommunicative, unprofessional, unproductive, incompetent, lazy, surly, rude, misogynistic, and an all-around bozo who does shoddy work. He promised to have my fence complete by May 30, and now it's July, and I have an unfinished fence with a long list of problems. The gates don't match up with one another and have an about three inch gap between them. He inaccurately measured and started from the corners, working his way to the middle, then realizing he didn't measure correctly and the boards wouldn't fit. He frequently postponed work for days and weeks and MONTHS, going radio silent. He would say condescending and rude things like "Let me say this as nicely as I can" and "only smiles for my paying customers." He didn't communicate hidden costs and expenses outside of the written contract, such as permits and surveys. He quoted me $8800 for a 256' fence then didn't drop the price when I ended up taking nearly 18 feet off the length.Finally, he refused to finish the job before receiving the final payment (which was, again, based off an earlier quote for a longer fence, on a contract with a completion date of 5/30) and threw a temper tantrum and took off. Other red flags include asking me for my lockbox passcode so he could "enter my house for electricity," despite there being AN OUTDOOR OUTLET. When I refused to provide this because, frankly, that's a huge safety concern and completely unnecessary, he refused to do work for yet another week until I had to ask my BOYFRIEND to call him and talk sense into him. Another red flag was the complete lack of respect and communication- he preferred to speak with my boyfriend even though I am the homeowner, the person paying for the work, and the only name on the contract. This is a big man with even bigger feelings, he needs to be handled gently and softly or he will become upset and refuses to do any work. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, especially women! read more

He did our 6 foot privacy fence and did not finish it. No middle stringer as he stated and as is standard for a 6 foot wooden fence. The fence bows as a result and looks terrible. Fence is backwards in places and big gaps in others. Pieces are not level and it looks terrible. He was months late and his employees complained he was not paying them and they were very young. He ran over my neighbors mailbox and did not fix it. He refused to fix and or finish this terrible fence and will be sued. Look him up in court. He's been sued quite a bit. Do not hire this guy. Chad is very friendly and responsive AT FIRST!! Had a wood fence removed. He didn't dig posts up. Just cut them at ground. Installed chain link. His "quality" material was off the shelf Menards fencing that he marked up. How do I know? His guy showed up in a rented Menards truck and dropped the fence in my driveway with the Menards stickers still on them. He was two weeks late to start. They would work for a bit and leave. I had to keep asking if they were coming out. After a week I had to ask if the fence was done. Chad said it was. I advised him it was extremely loose and wasn't stretched tight. There were gaps etc. He said he could fix it with a tension wire that he would do for me at cost. I said I would be willing to try for free but wouldn't pay to fix something he just installed and should be done right. He refused. He came and ripped out the fence the following day and left it sitting in a pile in our yard for 10 days. Leaving us with no fence for our dogs now. Trying to get our money back, which he promised, took a month. He would answer calls or texts. I was nice about it. He kept saying he mailed it. Then it never came. I have received multiple comments by passersby on how good the fence looks, and I've seen at least two people taking a picture of Chad's sign to give him a call, which speaks to the quality and beauty of the fence. Our job ended up being more difficult than I think Chad expected, and it did take him and his crew more time than they and we bargained for to complete it but the job kept moving forward. We had to talk through a few issues and agree on a solution, and Chad was easy to work with to get to a solution that made everybody happy. I attempted to build a 30 foot stretch of fence to finish off my yard, but after digging/setting the posts and finding them crooked I realized I'd bitten off more than I could chew. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! To say we were dissatisfied would be an understatement. We signed and paid our deposit in June of 2020, with a statement that the fence would be installed at the end of August 2020. When the install date came and went with no word, we reached out to Chad, who informed us there were delays due to COVID. This seemed reasonable, but we did not get a new install date, which worried us. When we tried to request a refund, since no new date had been sent and we couldn't get a hold of the company, we were told we couldn't, which is not true under Wisconsin law. In mid-October 2020 Chad finally delivered the materials to store in our garage and lawn, so we anticipated that construction would start soon. This wasn't the case and our lawn ended up dying underneath where the materials had been stored. Construction began two weeks later, on November 4th and things went from bad to worse. We never knew when they would show up, they were only here for a few hours at a time because they had other projects to attend to, by their own admission. Against our request, they dug a large trench in our house's grading, which would put our home at risk of flooding if there was excessive melt water or rain. At this point, we informed Chad that we would be withholding payment until the issue was resolved, and he immediately threatened to take us to court. We got consumer protection involved, and eventually settled on an amount to consider the contract complete. Once we started looking further, the fence was not level in multiple spots, not straight lines, and not even on the lot line by as much as six inches in many places. We had to tear out the whole fence and pay for a brand new one, since the fence posts were only driven 24 inches deep, so after our first winter the fence was already coming out of the ground. An absolutely horrid experience. I would advise that you pay a few extra dollars to go with a reputable company. read more

I wish I could say I even had the chance to work with Chad and Good Neighbor Fencing. Called to get a quote and I will say that he called me back immediately, which I really appreciated. On the phone he mentioned that he doesn't come out to give estimates until he knows that the customer is okay with the price point because he only gets maybe 20% of the business he bids. He said he would look up my address on google earth and put together a typical layout and give me an initial quote based on that. Then, if we agreed on that quote, he would come out in person. I found that to be a reasonable request given the climate and the value of his time. He did get back to me a short time later with an estimated cost based on what he could put together through google maps. That's about when things went off the rails for me. He sent me the text with the cost around 2:30pm on a Friday. I was with my family and didn't get a chance to respond right away. At 7:30pm I received another text from him stating "This price is good through Monday. After that you can add 5%." I was really put off by the threat of a major price increase so soon after receiving his estimate. So, I texted him stating basically thanks but no thanks and his response was " It's not a threat. Building materials are impossibly volatile. I can barely honor a quote for a day. Pay more with someone else if you wish" and he sent me a link to a news article about the cost of materials rising. While I can appreciate that there is fluctuating costs of materials (especially these days), I felt like I was being threatened with a random price hike as a way to push me into making a multi-thousand dollar decision on the spot. I don't see how he could possibly anticipate a 5% increase in the cost of materials in just 3 days time. Maybe if he had expressed during our phone conversation that his price could fluctuate based on the cost of materials at the time of project start I would have understood. My husband is a general contractor so I'm not naive to the cost of materials. But, as I stated, it read more like a warning that if I didn't make up my mind immediately, he would add additional fees just because. And he didn't express this when he sent the dollar amount, but decided to 5 hours later (as if he had already decided I wasn't responding fast enough and might flake on him so he was trying to ensure I moved forward without having time over the weekend to get additional quotes). He hadn't even physically been to my property at that point and his handling of this made me nervous that he would find other excuses to raise his prices once he did actually come out. Either way, he seemed like a nice guy before that and I had every intention of using him, but the exchange felt pushy and petty. If anything, I hope he learns how to communicate more effectively for the sake of his business. read more

March, 2018 - Met with Chad, the owner, and agreed to have him and his company build our fence. Chad said that if we paid him in cash he would give us a 10% discount. April - Our neighbors agree to hire Chad as well. May - My wife and I pay Chad $8,755 cash. Chad insisted that the entire fence would start by June 30th and would take about a week. June - On June 29th my wife texted Chad asking if he was still starting on the 30th. Chad says "The heat will push us back a couple days." July 9 - Still no sign of Good Neighbor Fencing or our fence. July 12 - Chad texts us "I will set up delivery of materials. They will be delivered Saturday, July 14th." July 15 - Chad says we need to pay him $300 to remove the dirt his company would be removing from the post holes. He previously mentioned that this was part of his service. At that point we said there were a lot of red flags. Chad said "CONSIDER THE CONTRACT CANCELLED" and that the materials were ours and he would refund us $500 of the labor. We paid him over $8,700 cash up front. The math didn't add up and now we would be on the hook for finding a new fencing. So we begged Chad to reconsider and to please install our fence as we agreed upon. July 16th, 2018 - Chad and his team show up to our property and start installing. We soon notice that his team is putting fencing in where there should be a gate. I explain this to the workers. Meanwhile my wife had texted Chad to confirm where the gate should go. Chad replied "Got it." When I arrived home from work they still put in the fence where the gate should have been! They also drilled holes for the fence on the side of the vinyl post and had the post placed in concrete. That post was ruined and they would have to completely remove it and order a new post if they wanted to fix it, which they didn't. July 17th - July 19th - Working just over 4 hours per day while continuing to add to their mistakes. Chad realized one of his workers glued a post-cap on without putting in a stiffener (which is required to attach a gate to this particular post). There was no way to fix it because they had cemented it in under our eave spout next to our house. That particular gate had to be placed backwards and swing the opposite way than we wanted. After that week, the fence was about 85% complete leaving three gates to be installed and about a 20 foot section of fencing to be installed. Chad had ordered all of the materials except one gate which he forgot to order. August 10 - The fence is STILL sitting only 85% complete. Chad finally responds with "We will finish today. I need a check for $663 before proceeding for 3 gates and 3 stiffeners." We asked to see the Home Depot receipts to which he replied "there will be no receipts." Chad then said he would not finish our fence because he "didn't trust us to pay." My wife calls Home Depot who provides the receipts. Chad had charged us $6,509. The receipt showed he paid just over $5,500. And he was asking for another $663! We also obtained our neighbors materials receipts and learned that our gates were showing up under their receipts. After asking for the receipts again, Chad texts me "you are nothing but a couple of common thieves." I responded with "thieves don't pay 85% cash up front and just ask to see receipts." Chad then said he was "done with our project." August 28th, 2018 - Chad sends a text to my wife saying "just a heads up about small claims court. You will be served at work." August 30th - Chad texts again "There will be a lien placed on your property for any unpaid invoices." Chad has continued to bombard us via email, text and certified mail with his unpaid invoice which is $800 higher than it should be for a job that he never finished! We had received five quotes for a fence and went with Good Neighbor Fencing, LLC because Chad was the best price and very personable. We signed a contract and made the first payment on May 15th, 2020. The fence was delayed numerous times as there were supply issues due to COVID, which we understood as the COVID related delays were not the fault of Chad. The supplies came in the beginning of August, and Chad was said he was able to start the fence on August 20th. At the start, our problems began; there was a miscommunication about the property line, but this was worked out, and a compromise was made to install a second gate. Chad informed us it would be an additional month to order a gate, but we were under the impression the first gate would still get installed at the original time. Chad would work 1-3 hours a day and then not return for days or weeks at a time until we emailed him asking when he would be back. After about a month, the fence was complete besides the end caps and the gates. We heard no updates from Chad and assumed he just wasn't going to come back, but on November 10th, we received an email from him saying the gates were in and he would be at our house on the 12th to install them. He never showed. We emailed him again and asked when he would return to install the gates. On November 17th at 5:30 pm, he responded with an invoice and said he would be back the following day to install the gates and end caps. 13 hours later, he replied, asking why we had not yet paid the invoice. I found this amusing, considering it was sent less than 24 hours earlier, and we had been very patient with how long it had to install the fence throughout this process. I informed him of my amusement, and he replied, saying that I was at fault and we should have made this installment when the fence was 1/2 completed. I pointed out that it is a little hard to pay for something without an invoice, nor did we get a reminder about the second payment before this, even though it had been months since the first one. We immediately paid the invoice and asked him to complete the fence that day to be done with this ordeal. Of course, this did not happen; he installed one gate and left. The following day he returned to install the second gate but forgot the rest of the end caps. Chad texted my partner saying he would return the following day to finish installing the end caps, and well that was over a month ago and we are still missing three end caps. I have attached pictures for you to see the unfinished fence. Chad offers excellent prices, but his lack of communication, time management, and inability to take accountability for overbooking himself is not worth the frustration. I would not recoment Chad's company "Good Neighbor Fencing" to anyone. We were extremely disapointed in the lack of timeliness, professionalism, curtosy, and workmanship. He was in a very big hurry to get our down-payment when we scheduled it in March... was to start on July 1st. We were constantly trying to track him down to get the wooden privacy fence started and finished. He did not "finish" until August 24th. He said to "take a look and let him know if we had any issues and to pay the remaining balance". We responded with our concerns of the gates not being to our satisfaction. They were not level top or bottom. There's large gaps in the walkway fence where the gate meets the other fencing. Also, gaps between some boards. The board has to been placed at the far corner of the house. There are no middle stringers which was part of the standard plan on our 6 foot high fence. We had also noted there were quite a few "untreated" pieces of wood used int eh gate frames and the upper brace nex to the walkway gate. We asked for some contact back and a walk-through with him. We had also sent pictures of some of our concerns. He responded back, "that is actually cedar which is 5 times the price of treated per 2x4. The cedar won't warp or twist. There will definately be spaces between pickets as tehy will shrink." That's the last we heard from him. Chad Swartzell was highly unprofessional and was in breech of contract from day 1 of our project. We signed a contract for a fence project to begin construction on June 15, 2019. Chad eventually showed up to begin work on Aug 13, 2019. None of the communication of these delays was initiated by Chad, but rather I would get a text message 1-3 days past the next "promised start date" after I called and left 2-4 messages. Each time promising a new date 2-3 weeks later, and never bothering to communicate further delays until he was left several messages. When construction finally began, our contract stated the process would be 3-5 business days.. After 2 weeks,(with Chad not showing up to work a single full day but rather 2-3 hours per day and 3 days of not showing up at all with no notice) our fence was about 2/3 completed with 18 of the planks of the wooden fence attached with only 1 nail (rather than the 4 that would be proper) several corner boards not cut/nailed flush (creating gaps) and 2 gates of varying heights across the driveway. Additionally, it was very obvious that Mr. Swartzell had no intention of completing our fence when he left the jobsite on Aug 29, 2019 as he proceeded to load up several of the materials for our fence that, per our contract, we had already paid for. When asked for an itemized receipt to come to an agreement on refund amount, Mr. Swartzell informed me that he does have any way to keep track of the actual cost or amount of materials ordered for each job, so there would not be any way for me to verify that I in fact have all of the materials that I paid for. read more

We had some weeds and branches in the back where the fence was supposed to go in, and Chad was very helpful and cut/trimmed all of them. Chad placed a good looking fence in a difficult place... our home on a reclaimed quarry lot. however the delays in starting and taking 2 weeks to finish, as well as the timing in between was frustrating. the communication was a bit lacking as well. overall he was good, but the frustration of timing was not necessarily worth the excellent price and good work. read more

I am honestly disappointed in this company. Thumbtack had great reviews and things seemed legitimate. We have been unable to build our fence. When the day came to start Chad never showed, never called, no explanation either for why we weren't contacted. I understand that weather alters timelines and things get busy, and I would have had no problem with postponing, but the lack of response is unprofessional. Chad chose to cancel our contract and told us he would refund us via check the next day. He still has not even sent the check and is making no effort to refund us. Unfortunately after looking around sites other than Thumbtack I'm finding this is more the norm than not. We have reached out to an attorney this morning as well as the Better Business Bureau. I would rather not take legal action, but he has $2,400 of our money for doing nothing, and is not cooperating. When we informed him we are seeking legal counsel, he laughed at us. It's such an unfortunate behavior for the supposedly "Good Neighbor" Fencing. I will continue to tell all who will listen to avoid this company until I have my money back. read more
