We've been looking for an apartment in the Somerville area for about 1.5 months and were getting no…read moreresponses from properties and brokers. We were becoming tired of the whole run around process and never hearing back, especially because we had what most brokers tried to push as a lower price point saying nothing was available in the area for that much. (We currently lived in a place less than what we wanted). While taking a stroll in another neighborhood in Somerville, we randomly pulled up the Zillow app and found out the location we were standing right in front of had a new unit available in the same time frame and price point we were looking for. It actually seemed too good to be true. We called right away and Ranjita got back to us immediately. We rattled off the list of questions we had about the place and she was able to give us answers right away and she promised to get back to us about the answers she didn't (which she did that night). I'm the paranoid one of the two and had /many/ more questions. It's crazy to think we were going to sign a lease at a new apartment we had never been to (thus is the times of covid and my fear of scams was elevated). Ranjita returned with more pictures and a great video walk-through. I was still nervous. She happily provided me with proof of identification and broker's license. She gave us the option to pay by credit card which made me feel safer about my personal funds. She got us the lease working with property management. This always takes time as the broker acts as the go-between and she did her best to get us the papers we needed. When I had a few questions or asked if we could change items on the lease, she listened, was helpful, and reassured me I wasn't annoying her with so many questions (I probably was, but she was nice enough to act like I wasn't ha). She was able to get us in to view the apartment after the previous tenants move out, so at least we were able to see it before move-in day. Quick process overall. Very responsive to emails. Easier than we thought it would be.

Ranjita then ignored my email requesting the refund. We applied to the unit in part because it said "cats allowed" in all online listings (see photo attached for example). We were upfront throughout the process that we were about to get a cat. During the showing, a no-pet policy was never mentioned. We were encouraged to apply, and then after we paid the application fee, all of a sudden we were told that the owner of the unit would not consider any pets and the listings were then all updated to "cats not allowed," which seems very misleading. At its worst, it is a malicious "bait and switch" strategy... at its best it's very negligent and disorganized. Just be careful when applying. We were referred to Cambridge Premier Realty by a friend, but we will not be referring them to other friends of ours.

Classic slumlords in every sense of the word. If you want an apartment with cracks in the ceiling,…read moremold growing in the walls of the bathroom (because the fan was installed in the 1960s and no longer vents), drafty windows, but also a rent more expensive than a mortgage, then look no further. They will enter your apartment with less than a 24 hour warning. They will increase the rent every year for no reason at all. If you rent with them, get the best renters insurance you can find as soon as possible.

Two of the three times I made arrangements to meet at their office I ended up leaving stressed, frustrated, and late for work without getting the intended business done. There was lack of information as to why I needed to give them more checks before ever seeing the lease; I figured I would get a better explanation when I went there to give checks but the Realtor didn't inform me that she intended for me to accomplish my business with the other employees there - yet no one there knew what was going on either. I felt as though I was the one who had to keep checking in, keeping the ball rolling, and pushing to get the signed lease in my hands. Throughout the whole process I felt insecure about the arrangement following through. My last visit to their office was arranged in advance and I confirmed 2 days before. Yet NO ONE WAS THERE and the phone number I had, no one answered. Upon writing an email, John (I believe he is the owner), responded within 3 minutes by calling me and offering to bring the keys to me. I do commend his prompt response. While I am relieved everything worked out, I still don't think the hassle was worth the Realtor fee I had to pay. If you do any business with Discover Properties, make sure it is directly with John Bethany.
