Velo - This is my thermostat, while it's off. AC is not allowed right now by management. It's 70F outside and all windows are open.

I have lost count how many times I needed to evacuate in the middle of the night. During the spring months their policy is to prioritize heat over AC although temperatures in the apartment don't drop below 75. On warm days we bake. Opening windows provides little relief but equals sitting on the side of the highway. Street noise could drive anyone insane - honking central all day long. This policy straight up abusing residents. Counting days to move out. Also, don't trust the Apartments.com reviews. I tried posting a review there and paraphrased it multiple times - still was not posted. Seems like they are paid by Vélo to remove negative reviews.

Context - New management as of ~ 8/2024. So far, they've…read morebeen a vast improvement in all areas. - Lived here ~ 7/2023 - 11/2024 (current) Management - In my experience, maintenance and front desk members are the canary in the coal mine for an organization. They're easy to take for granted but when the quality in these teams slide EVERYTHING else slides. Luckily, in both cases I've had great experiences with the staff. - For the front desk and maintenance team, they're really friendly. That seems small but I really like that they always say hello and are genuinely friendly people when I have questions/ requests. - Every time I've had a maintenance request, it gets dealt with quickly after the request is put in, the team is very friendly, honest, and professional - Every time I have a question for the front desk, they're able to answer it or escalate and then get back to me - Having lived at an apartment where this was not the case in the past, I can't stress enough how much of a positive impact this has. I don't care if the elevator stops working (probably happened ~2 times). I care that the elevator is back up and running shortly after (~ 3 hours later with the other elevator working just fine in the meantime) - Things happen at every apartment building (issue with appliances, questions about the apartment, a spill in the hallway, etc). What matters is if that gets done quickly or at all. I've been in places where it's the latter but Velo does the former ~ get's addressed same day or first thing the next day. Location pros - Being literally across the street from the T is the best. It's the last stop so you get trains more often and can always get a seat - Arnold Arboretum is a block away and is one of my favorite parks in all of Boston - Neighbors at least on my floor (4th) have been very kind and approachable. Note on other reviews: - A/C concerns: There was previously a policy to flip between AC or heat so you'd have ~1 week where the AC wasn't on in early winter. The new management has put forward a policy (~ Nov 2024) to have it available year round. - Fire alarm: I did notice a lot of fire alarms during a period but it turned out they were testing the fire alarms which feels like a compliance thing more than anything else. There have been a couple times where the alarm went off around dinner time but it went off fairly quickly. Overall: - Best place to live if you want to be in JP and can afford the price range

Honestly, the sad part is originally I would have given this place a better review. But with the…read morecircumstances as they are, I'm fairly upset with the apartment complex currently and if I had known two years ago this would have been where I was at, I probably would have gone with a different complex. First and foremost, if you intend on having any unexpected life changes I would suggest a different complex. MetroMark makes you sign a 90 (NINETY) Day Lease Break agreement, and I fairly certain when you are breaking a lease you generally do not know THREE months ahead of time that you are breaking this lease. In my case it is that I was offered a job on the west coast. Secondly, they also do not allow subletting. So even if you find a suitable person to take over your lease, they won't allow it. You also are not allowed to add a roommate until your lease is over - so couples looking to potentially move in together please be aware of this. Lastly, they will not work with you on the renewal amounts. This renewal cycle they wanted to raise my rent $450 - and while the potential new renter I had in line was willing to sign the renewal if they met him halfway, I was told that the amounts were as they stand. Yes, it is a pet friendly community, but most people don't pick up after their dogs (I am a dog owner and while I appreciate the available dog bags people rarely use them). The only reason this is a two star and not a one star because I am frankly very angry they are not willing to work with their residents when it comes to life changing events, is the cleaning staff is very kind and do their best to keep the building clean. Do with this review what you will, but please make sure you take a look at your leases before you sign them - especially since this place has shown they're just in it for the money grab. Ask for a lease example for any place you apply to and make sure the terms fit what you are looking for, because frankly if the last three years have taught us anything, you never know what life throws you and I suggest finding a more sympathetic apartment complex.

I lived in the MetroMark apartments for three years (6/18-6/21) and overall had a very positive…read moreexperience. I ended up having to find a place in Boston from afar (and then move sight unseen) and was able to easily browse open apartments on their website and then work with a staff person to get photos of the place I'd eventually live in and secure a lease. Moving in was super easy--I think I just paid a $250 deposit apart from first month's rent--as was moving out. I leased a one bedroom apartment while I lived here and it was clean and spacious. The bedroom was big (several feet to each wall on every side of a queen bed) and there was a walk in closet that had room for not only my dresser, but also storage space for plenty of boxes--lots of cabinet space in the kitchen and a coat closet in the main room, too. All of the appliances were new and nice and I only once had an appliance issue (an electrical problem with the dishwasher, which the staff fixed right away). I'd also never had a washer and dryer in an apartment before, so that felt like a luxury. All of the appliances were energy- and water-efficient, too, which was great. I lived on the sixth floor of my building on the side facing Washington Street and the bus depot. I never especially had street noise issues and only once had a noise problem with a neighbor. I also lived next to the elevator and never heard it. I will say that even facing mostly away from the train tracks, I heard (and felt) the trains constantly. It didn't especially bother me since I already slept with ear plugs in and my bedroom was carpeted, but I can see how it would be an annoyance for some. I always found the MetroMark staff to be polite, helpful and responsive (I most recently most often was in touch with Jaz in the office and Joel at the desk--both great people!). The one time I needed after hours maintenance help (small issue with my AC during the summer), Joel was super helpful. I did also think that the building management did an excellent job trying to keep residents safe and informed during the pandemic. I never really used the common spaces at the buildings, though they looked nice. I did find it a little odd that the TV lounges didn't have cable service, though the computer/study area did have good wifi and a printer. The one thing that I did use a bit was the gym--nice weights, treadmills and bikes, but it felt small sometimes for how many people were using it (especially at night). I never had a car in Boston and it was nice that the building had several Zip Cars in the parking lot, though I eventually preferred using the Enterprise rental location down Washington Street for longer trips. The location of the building and the neighborhood were both outstanding. I worked downtown and my commute door to door via the orange line was about 35-40 minutes. Jamaica Plain is a great neighborhood and having the expansive green spaces of the arboretum, Franklin Park and the Southwest Corridor so close was fantastic. South and Centre streets in JP are great little main streets with lots of good restaurants and bars and independent shops. One thing that I didn't love about my lease terms (though the language was very clear) was that the month to month option was extremely expensive. That said, I renewed my lease twice and my rent did not go up one dollar in three years, which was amazing to me.

The leasing office and maintenance are responsive Cons: 1. Utilities are too high and property management/ leasing office refuse to do anything about it. For a 2 bed/2 bath my average water bill was $85 for normal use ( e.g. - quick daily showers, wash clothes once a week or every other week etc). The electric bill was an average of $250 and closer to $400 in the winter months because heating is also electric. So if you actually like to be warm during the winter months keep that expense in mind. 2. The walls are paper thin, you will not hear your neighbors next to you but you can hear every foot step of upstair neighbors. Hopefully you don't have a family with young kids above you, unfortunately I did. And the leasing office did nothing about it. 3. When I moved out, I was charged for scratches on the stove and +$200 was deducted from security deposit for "damages" so be aware that they will do anything to take out of security deposit if and when you move. 4. Although the apartment complex is nice, I believe the rent is overpriced and charging $100 for parking is also too much considering how much renters pay in rent; ultimately its not worth it and renters can find apartments just as nice that don't have as high rent and better located.

The current management has been great from my experience so far and Matt and Ryan in the leasing office are phenomenal! They smile and greet you as you walk by and are very approachable and quick to address any questions or issues. The apartment itself is very nice with an open floor plan and new, brand-name appliances. Side note - the water pressure in the showers is amazing. There are some great amenities like game rooms and a well-rounded gym. They also have work from home spaces and a kid's play room. Outside there is a fenced-in dog run to let your dog off leash. Some owners don't pick up after themselves but that's the same anywhere you go unfortunately. The place as a whole is very pet friendly and I see a lot of dogs around. Also, it's just a 5 minute walk to Millennium Park which is a great spot to walk your dog. Did I mention there's literally a dog daycare across the street and it's one of the nicest ones I've seen? For parking, there's assigned spaces outside in the lot and inside the garage. They also have 4 electric vehicle charging stations (8 spaces) which is a huge bonus. You pay for your parking spaces but the charging station is free so it's not so bad. Although no apartment building is perfect, I can say that I'm very happy with Oak Row overall and I'd highly recommend it!
