On our…read moreway to Yellowstone we had stayed at a ramshackle motel seven miles north in Bliss, and I knew we had to find something better for our return trip. This was maybe $50 more than the dingy Bliss motel, and 100% worth it. The owners live on property and seem to put a lot of love and care into it. I really liked their yard decor; it think it helps make the place feel more comfortable for people of all walks of life. We stayed in the Hemingway cabin, which was just perfect for us as a solo couple. Everything was clean, including linens and bedding. The shower worked well. I appreciated the decor that emphasized the Hemingway theme, although I might suggest an accent color wall could jazz the place up a bit. Perhaps the wall behind the refrigerator. Speaking of, we were happy to find the standard amenities like microwave, refrigerator, and coffee maker. It was quite warm during our stay and, although an older unit, we found the AC to work well. The bed was comfy and we both slept really soundly! There is one lodge area with several rooms, and then the cabins scattered around the property. Although there were other guests using the common areas, we never felt crowded or like we were forced to interact due to layout. We enjoyed a couple friendly chats with other guests. We had dinner on our front deck and enjoyed the creek babbling away alongside us. The creek setting was AMAZING. Having just driven through endless miles of cow farms on Highway 30, we weren't prepared for this idyllic setting we landed in. I mean... stunning. Being from Western Oregon we're spoiled by scenery, so I don't say that lightly. We had a long drive ahead and I very much wish we had been able to spend more time here. Only two minor things to mention. First, this is very near the highway so if you want to sleep with windows open, you can expect some highway noise. It was not something that impacted our stay to any degree. Second, the entire entrance and parking areas are filled with round rock instead of gravel, which made my Toyota Corolla slip around like crazy. My boyfriend was puzzled by the choice. It's certainly nowhere near a deal breaker, just a minor annoyance. Area observations: The town of Hagerman just south has pretty sparse amenities, depending on what your typical travel style is. Bliss, the town to the north, is not much more than a truck stop with fast food. Highway 30 isn't really scenic at all unless you're right near the gorge area. And the entirety of Southern Idaho smells like cows...it can be better or worse depending on conditions, but it's there. We didn't have time to explore the area, but the Hagerman Fossil Beds sound cool and there's parks and natural areas to explore along there.

That being said, this is one of the most depressing places I've ever stayed. I'm giving it two stars because the guy at the check in counter was friendly and efficient and we did not encounter bed bugs. It also didn't look to be a type of place people are living in; the other guests I saw and spoke to seemed to simply be just regular folks traveling on a budget. The room wasn't "dirty", but the whole place is run down and just kind of sad. They obviously are using some sort of very strong fake vanilla room freshener, but it just can't hide the musty smell that is certainly embedded in this old motel. The layout for the motel is also strange. It's two stories, with all of the room entrances off of interior hallways. Walls are definitely thin and floors are creaky. The hallways are as musty as the rooms. I think the owners are good folks who are trying to operate a motel on a shoestring budget near a truck stop in a depressed little town. But given the condition of the place and the overall atmosphere, it's probably the worst place I've ever stayed and even though it was cheap I feel like we paid too much. We had reservations here for the travel night back to Oregon, and I cancelled that the same night we stayed. I just couldn't imagine ending our trip with another stay here, so I booked a more expensive spot only a few miles south...it was absolutely worth the extra money to not stay here again. Also, just know that pretty much all of southern Idaho smells like cows.

The owners are awful, rude, money-hungry people with no website, no real phone for their business (they use a cell phone with no voice mail set up so you can never leave them a message), the motel is old, run-down, cold, the bathrooms are dirty, and most importantly they have bedbugs there. These folks don't deserve to run a business and it seems they are definitely taking advantage of people's wallets during these new C O V I D times, but they aren't following cleaning policy at all. Here is the long story for those who would like to read: This hotel is awful and the people who run it are equally awful. My dad has cancer and I have been coming to Gooding, Idaho for a few months now and usually stayed at a different hotel, but to save money on this trip, I made a reservation at the Cottage Inn. The man who owns it took my reservation over the phone, he asked for a credit card to hold the room, I never got an email confirmation or any paperwork of any kind. I was a late check-in (12:35 AM), so he'd left the room door unlocked and I went in. I noticed that the room is a hodgepodge of furniture with no real plan or sense. Whatever. I was tired and went to bed. In the middle of the night, it got very cold and I turned on the small wall heater full blast. When I woke up at 7 AM my room was full of flies. In the light of day, there was a one-inch gap between the door and the door jam and probably 15 flies were buzzing around my semi-warm room. The curtains were held up with thumbtacks. There was no coffee machine, no hairdryer, and oddly, no television in the room. The bathroom was appallingly small and icky with a dirty drain in the shower. I got ready, packed my stuff, and went over to my dad's house. I went back to the Cottage Inn and went to the office at 10 AM to check out. The man told me their cancellation policy is 72 hours so he would not give me a refund for the next three nights I had booked there. I asked him where that cancellation policy is, where my paperwork was, where his website is, but he had no answer for that. I'll answer it for him ... nowhere. There is no website, no paperwork, nothing for this motel. I got the phone number for the Cottage Inn off the Gooding, Idaho Visitors Center website. The man who owned the motel just kept saying he could put a space heater and a coffee pot in the room. I told him that I didn't feel comfortable staying there and if he didn't give me a refund I would dispute the charge with my credit card company. I did that. Two days later I had these funny, itchy bumps on my face and it only got worse from there. The bumps spread to my arms, chest and upper back, and neck. No one else in my family got these bumps, so even though we all stayed at the other hotel in town, I was the only one who got bumps and a rash. I was the only one who spent one night at the Cottage Inn. I flew home a few days later. The rash was getting worse, so I went to the doctor only to find out I had bedbug bites and was having an allergic reaction to them. I immediately called the Cottage Inn and asked for a full refund and the lady on the phone kept interrupting me asking why I didn't tell whoever checked me in that I didn't like the room. I answered that I was a late check-in. Did I go to the office? No, it was closed. Did I ring the bell? No, it looked closed. I kept asking for a refund and she went into this long description of how people steal hair dryers and coffee machines from their motel so I should have asked for them. I told her I just wanted out of there that I didn't want to stay there, she kept interrupting me and then wanted to talk without being interrupted. I let her talk and as soon as I started to answer she interrupted me and when I asked her to let me speak she actually hung up on me! I called back and asked for my refund and she again asked if she could talk without being interrupted. Of course, but as soon as I started to answer her questions she interrupted me AGAIN and when I pointed that out, she HUNG UP ON ME AGAIN. This woman is completely unprofessional and should not own a business. Disgusting, sad and disturbing. I hope the good folks of Gooding, Idaho stand up against these people and shut this bedbug-infested "motel" down. It's an eyesore on their cute little farm town and the people who own this place are awful and should NOT own a business.
