Location was inconvenient for me as it was a 45 minute drive, but the friendly and helpful staff, combined with their large and beautiful facilities made it worthwhile. Second Harvest Heartland was easy to work with. Their online reservation system made it easy to see which time slots could accommodate us. We were even able to use their large meeting room space to host a 2 hour lunch and networking event prior to our volunteering session. The large room included 2 screens for projecting presentations from your laptop, sound system with microphone and a strong and free WiFi. All of this was of great value to our group! As one of the leaders of Asian Professionals Alliance in MN (APAM), we brought together 70 volunteers from across APAM member companies: 3M, Best Buy, Cargill, General Mills, Medtronic, Target & US Bank. Not only was this venue large enough to accommodate our large group, they were so organized, gave us great instruction and constantly kept the workplace clean, comfortable. They had 6 computers at the entrance for each individual to register for the event. Half of our group boxed care packages for senior citizens while the other half worked to inspect and package 40 pound bags of potatoes for food shelves across the country. My favorite part is that they share the results of your volunteer efforts at the end of your shift. I would absolutely recommend this place for volunteering sessions - for individuals, small groups and large groups!

Five years ago we sold our large home in the suburbs where we had raised our two daughters. We…read moremoved to a lovely historic house with apartments by the river in downtown St Paul just blocks from a large 1960's Salvation Army. A year later my husband left to homestead his mother's inherited condo. Finding myself alone and unwilling to go to bars, I walked over and joined a women's and a senior's group at that Salvation Army, and a women's group at this Broolyn Park Citadel as well. These were the BEST decisions I could have made! Years ago I tutored junior high kids in East Harlem, taught camping hiking skills to inner city fresh air camp kids, was hired on an Antioch work study semester to be the first Spanish interpreter at age 19 at Jacobi ( welfare) municipal hospital in the Bronx, was the first college student hired by the Job Corps working in downtown LA teaching Chicanas how to read, then assisted the Exec Director at Boston's largest Community Action $20 million program ABCD right out of college. My last job in the public sector was as an EEO Officer for CETA under the Dept of Labor for 10 counties in Massachusetts. I spent four wonderful years within the Salvation Army, participating in their programs, accepting some of their wonderful donated food from Lunds and Byerlys and observing TWO citadels' (other in downtown St Paul) staff and participant children, families. SO many social service programs are corrupt today: their staff help themselves FIRST to all donations given to the program. This is WIDESPREAD. Not here at Salvation Army. This is a church but they do not aggressively prosytelize to participants. Instead they maintain order in their food give aways through more " Christian" philosophies in crowd control. Many people would be starving if it were not for the Salvation Army that DAILY send trucks to their local supermarkets to pick up almost expired food. So you find the homeless, students, seniors, immigrants and middle class folk that are unemployed altogether waiting for this food. Some Citadels also run official food shelves only for qualified residents in their specific assigned region of care. These food banks ( located inside some Salvation Army " citadels") help those who qualify with utility bills just before disconnect, sometimes a little for rent, finding housing, sometimes clothing/ warm jackets blankets, hats mittens gloves, children's' new winter coat give aways, etc. etc etc. TRULY AMAZING care. Some have after school programs and day care at prices according to what people can afford. They have in EVERY major city the VERY BEST program in the country for SUCCESSFULLY helping folk quit drugs. I know, for in Virginia I would bring many inner city and other young people to their FULL year live/ work in programs. This Citadel is run by the Pollancos, a WONDERFUL couple who ran a truly intense citadel previously in the SOUTH SIDE of CHICAGO! Yes, Chicago!!! And, for many years to boot!! I met Capt Jen and her terrific women's group on an Arts and Crafts weekend in the Salvation Army's camp up north. That was the VERY best weekend I had in many many years! Capt Jen is an outgoing, effervescent, joyous loving human being AND an outstanding brilliant speaker, I could listen to her for hours! All the Salvation Army Citadels survive primarily upon donations from Christmas Bell Ringing. Corporate donations from neighboring businesses in their regions are a massive help. Bell Ringing donations have been down the past few years because our younger populations are less familiar with the highly effective years long programs the Salvation Army run in small communities EVERYWHERE. I bell rang in an open FREEZING walk way in front of Roseville's Macy's for 3 years!! I brought my authentic 5 foot stuffed Grinch, twinkly lights for the bucket, Santa sitting on a battery operated Rudolf with blinking nose and my authentic sleigh bells saying Happy holidays in Spanish and English! Yup and it all worked! Oh and wore a tall pixel hat with green red small lights!

I had an old Sony tube television that still works and hoped to give away. I ended up keeping it…read moretoo long and it's not wanted. That, a high back armchair that has seen better days, an old Sleep Number mattress that has been replaced by a new mattress, and some miscellaneous foam strips that I tried to use to stop the trough in the middle of the Sleep Number air chambers had to go. I reached out to Junk360 via their website request for estimate and got a prompt response. A couple emails later a pickup date and time was set. On the day of the pickup I received a call, as I was told to expect, telling me they were on the way. The crew was on time, professional, courteous. I presume it was a light load for them but they had everything out in just a few minutes. Less than half an hour from parking the truck to closing it up. I'm glad I used Junk360.
