This museum is definitely small, but the entrance payment of $5 each was well worth it. It took a little over an hour to go through it but it was a dive back in time to the present. A reminder of life well lived. The Indians, the farmers, the Chinese, the Japanese, the Mexicans all played a part in what Hood River county has become and all had a little representation in this small gem of a museum. The staff was friendly and informative and helped make this trip down memory lane a pleasure.

When I visited, it had a fascinating temporary exhibit on laundry. You wouldn't think pioneer-and-beyond laundry to be an interesting subject, but the exhibit led you through a progression of machines, and a history of the people who had laundry services for the town, that made the early days of Hood River really come to life. The permanent exhibits were also well done. This is not just a small-town, slap a few pictures and descriptions on pasteboard kind of museum. Check it out!

This self-service laundromat is completely unstaffed. Presumably, if one had an issue, they would have to go next door or call someone to resolve it. Fortunately, I didn't have any issues during my time here. Even though it was unstaffed, there were plenty of security cameras, and they appeared to be real. I didn't notice any disruptive customers in the laundromat or in the general area. When I walked in, it seemed to be empty, although a couple of people arrived after I did. There was plenty of seating, and they had some of the coolest folding tables I've ever seen. There were four separate large tables, and each had top sections. So, it would be nearly impossible for one person to hog the entire folding section. This laundromat is certainly not what I would call "modern," as the machines only accept quarters, and all have manually locking handles. (As far as I can tell, most Oregonians will go their entire lives without experiencing a modern laundromat. I haven't found a single modern laundromat in this whole state yet. They aren't even close to understanding how much modernity they are missing out on.) Prices were reasonable overall, although I couldn't figure out the price of the dryers without putting quarters in, and the dryers didn't work very well as compared to their same models at other laundromats. It's as if they had either been poorly maintained for many years, or the heat was set to lower than it should have been (in spite of my ensuring that I had selected the correct setting). There was a quarter dispensing machine which seemed to work fine, but the washing machine would have eaten at least three extra quarters if I had let it (on an $8 cycle). On the bright side, this laundromat was much cleaner looking and better smelling than the other laundromat in town (next to Grocery Outlet) which I'd walked out of right before coming here. It still didn't smell great, though. There was a pronounced mold/mildew stench in the air, which I have found to be true at almost every single laundromat I've gone to in Oregon so far. The cleanliness was not great, although it was better than any of my alternatives without having to drive an hour or wash everything by hand or pay someone else to do it... There was a large bug with spotted wings on top of the dryer. The insides of the washer doors were all caked with this nasty green stuff around the edges, and some of it definitely broke off into my laundry. I used a lot of soap, but still, gross. The insides of the soap dispensers on the washer were also really nasty and looked like they were definitely not cleaned on a regular basis, if they had ever been cleaned at all. Maybe the staff is thinking, "soap is clean, you don't need to clean it," but soap buildup attracts bugs and can cause allergy problems for anyone using the machine who is allergic to that soap. The toilet in the restroom looked like it had literally never been cleaned. So, I have a lot of misgivings about the cleanliness, yet it's reasonably priced, not too crowded, and better than any of any other nearby options I'm aware of.
