I love thrifting and estate sale shopping, so Community Warehouse was an excellent choice for me on this special day. I love Community Warehouse's mission! It's a nonprofit furniture bank that collects home goods and redistributes them to those in need. The warehouse space in the back accepts furniture donations, and houses a large collection of pieces for their program. There is also a retail space in the front of the building where visitors can peruse estate sale home goods like furniture and decor. There is a wide variety of products to choose from, and everything I saw was in excellent condition. The store is pleasantly curated, and prices are fair and well-marked. I purchased a nightstand, and found many other items that may draw me back to the store sooner than later. I'm pleased to add Community Warehouse to my regular rotation of home goods stores I frequent.

But they seem to be doing as a little disruption as possible for the customers enjoyment. I really do like come in here. The people are generally really nice. It's not vegan, but I got into town late last night and hadn't eaten anything other than peanut butter and trail mix in like 30 hours, so this gave me new life. Everyone here felt like an equal regardless of your socioeconomic status. This place is an example of how the world should operate. Also, the fettuccine was super dank. They also accept EBT and you can buy meal vouchers for $2 to give to people on the street if you prefer.

Sisters was originally a refuge for down and out travelers, but as society changed it became a place to help anyone who was in need of help. I discovered this place in 1979 after a moronic police officer arrested me and my boyfriend and impounded my car because we were traveling without our parents. My mother ordered them to release me, but I still spent days jumping though hoops to get my car back. We had little money and Sister's provided good cheap meals between 65c and $1.50. The first meal was free. When I returned to Portland in 30 years later to search for locations for our next art gallery, I stopped in just to show my adult children a place I had been once. A man named Larry immediate rushed over to greet us and see what help we needed. I explained to him we were fine and "just looking." He informed me everyone needed help at times and there was no shame as he shoved a handful of meal voucher's into my hand. Then he insisted that we sit down for meal. I did not want to seem like a snob so I joined this very kind man. A waiter came to our table and took our order. A few minutes later he returned with very full plates of surprisingly good food. While we ate, Larry told me he had been homeless and began volunteering part-time so he could eat. That turned into a full time position as a cook and his life was getting back on track. We were told if you volunteer for an hour you get $6 of vouchers which can be used towards meals or anything from their general store which had sock, hats, hygiene supplies etc. Meals only cost $1.25 so $6 of vouchers covered 3 square meals and extras like socks and warm clothes. After eating we volunteered for an hour and each of us earned a handful of meal vouchers. I thanked Larry for his kindness and upon our departure gave our massive pile of food vouchers to a homeless lady with a small baby. I was so impressed with this place, a person who is in a dire situation can work for their meals and help others in the process, they can earn enough vouchers to afford to be charitable to others. This is the only co-opt restaurant I have ever seen but it seems like a great idea that could help restore dignity to people who are down on their luck. I have eaten in hundreds of fine restaurants, but this little place in the Burnside area of Portland (skid row) will always be special to me. More cities should have co-ops.

They seem intensely stressed and have terrible people skills. I work in healthcare and have restaurant experience, so I understand the hustle but the level of rude is so unnecessary. One of my shifts, I witnessed a staff member aggressively tell a resident to work faster plating food. He had stepped away for a moment to grab some more apple sauce. It was near the end of service and one of the servers told us people were about done so he made the decision to step away. The staff member was so rude and belittling right in front of everyone. Totally power trip. It was really uncomfortable. Another shift, I passed drinks. Stacey was running bevs and she was so aggressive. She kept shoving full pitchers at me and snagging my not-even-empty ones. One time she shoved it so hard while I was pouring a drink that I spilled water on one of the diners eating breakfast. Afterwards they invite you to have a "family meal" but they completely ignore you if you're new. It's a bad vibe. I'm in the process of obtaining my bachelors in nursing and I'm close to graduation. I am interested in community health and psych. I was hoping to volunteer on a weekly basis to gain perspective on this population who are often discriminated, marginalized, and vulnerable. Sadly, I won't be going back.

(These difficult things that nobody likes to talk about, but should be acknowledged and shared as resources for others in the same boat.) This location also makes me happy because it provides free bread - and I'm not just talking sliced Wonderbread. I mean kalamata olive loaf from Trader Joe's, sourdough from Grand Central Bakery, fresh bagels, garlic bread. It raised my spirits when I was unemployed myself, so kudos to the businesses for donating their delicious bread and kudos to Neighborhood House for being there to help.

But this experience today was such a let down. I walked in and checked in with an older man who was very sweet. He was asking me some background questions and the woman who was supposed to 'shop' us walked up to us. She looked us up and down and didn't smile. She stood there awkwardly for a few minutes before leaving to use the bathroom. She came back and started to help us. Immediately we felt uncomfortable. Straight faced she asked us what we wanted and just stood in silence when not telling us what we could have. It was so awkward I tried to make small talk with her just to break the weird silence. Towards the end, a Russian woman came in and started talking to her. She totally ignored us and started speaking in only Russian, and turned her back to us. She turned around a few times to look at what we were getting and then said 'great, you're done, you can go.' And then turned to speak more to the woman in Russian. I felt this was very rude. We just lost a child and are treated this way. I appreciate the help throughout this past year but will not be returning here..
