Called them and they said they could take my reclining sofa. Drove over 20 miles to get there, and they said they can't take it.

But even without that very personal experience, I love the collection of special edition (and pricey, but appropriately so) books intermixed with $1 used books out side. I have purchased several of each. Always worth it. As a grandfather with only one grandchild, now 10 years old, reading a deluxe edition of The Princess Bride to him during weekly visits last winter brought a kind of joy that is hard to capture in words. As Stephen King once famously wrote: "It's hard to make strangers care about the good things in your life." For me, Fables & Fancies is one of those good things.

The staff on the floor are engaging and genuinely helpful when you're searching for a particular find. That said, my experience selling books was disappointing. The process felt impersonal, and the seller/owner was not particularly engaging. One example: I brought in a brand-new book that originally cost $40 and was offered only a $1 store credit. I understand used bookstores have to make a profit, but the experience left me feeling like my books would have been better off in a friend's library. Great place to browse and buy, but I would lower expectations if you're planning to sell.

[Space]: The shop has small box shelves rented out by independent artists and creators to showcase their items. Think of it as a way for Empty Shelf to rent out space so creators can consign their items. I really liked some of the cute designs from the creators featured here. In a way visiting Empty Shelf feels like going to an arts and crafts fair but shrinked into one small brick-and-mortar store. In addition, the shop also has a really niche and interesting selection of English and Japanese books including Japanese Shonen Jump magazines. They even have some Japanese vinyl records. For anyone who is looking for specific popular anime IPs, this is not the gift shop to visit. [Workshops]: Empty Shelf also serves as a venue for various workshops (e.g. Embroidery Cup Sleeve Workshop, Fancy Dumpling Bag Workshop, Perfume Making Workshop, etc). Check Empty Shelf's IG page for additional details on upcoming workshops. [Conclusion]: I am a big fan of this shop and the curated items here are really hitting on all cylinders. I may come here from time to time whenever I need to look for unique, cute, and non anime-inspired gifts.

It's located off of Cahuenga Blvd & Chandler Blvd, with a small private parking lot out back and plenty of street parking around. I knew this bookstore was stacked but wow! The Iliad is literally stacked with books! From floor to ceiling, this place is packed with books every which way. Because of this and narrow aisles, it can get kind of tight in places but it's easy to maneuver around. They have practically every category/genre you can think of, but be prepared to take your time since it'll take a while to look through everything. There are some seats if you want to take a load off and there's a clean restroom near the back. The new and used books vary in price, but for the most part they're on the cheaper side. The moment you walk in the front door you're confronted with the fact that they have a lot of books on a lot of subjects. In fact, at this location, the moment you walk into the door, you find a gigantic pile of all kinds of books on all kinds of subjects that they're offering for very discounted prices. I've often wondered what would happen if you wanted a book on the very bottom of the pile, and if you pulled it out, everything may come flying. But, that's just part of the fun of shopping at this bookstore, you never know what adventure you're going to encounter. In terms of selection, they have books on pretty much any subject you can think of. In some ways, it's a little hard to find certain things in this bookstore due to the massive quantity of books they have all set up in long aisles. In some cases, what I find kind of fun/curious is the fact that perhaps they will have a sign telling you that a certain subject of books in a particular aisle, but, when you look down that aisle, you can find none of the books on that subject. Mostly, I believe, that's just because they've sold out of that particular subject matter. But, it does make for an interesting quest, because there's been a few times when I've looked around the shop and found books on that subject in a completely different section. Thus, the chaos of this book shop adds to the overall quest for that great piece of reading material. This bookshop focuses a lot on fiction and poetry. They really have a large collection by various authors from across all genres and across the globe. So, if you're looking for that really unique piece of fiction and or poetry, this book shop most likely will have it. Overall, ever since its inception, Iliad has been a great place to find books. Yes, it is kind of a chaotic/fun sort of a mess. But, that adds to the overall uniqueness of this business. Fun place to shop!
