Such an amazing bookstore, with great selection of BIPOC, LGBTQ+, disabled and indie author selection. Some of the best book selection I've seen across many bookstores I've visited. Amazing resource for queer trans and neurodivergent readers. One of very few resources of this nature in the San Gabriel Valley.

Right upon my first steps into this bookstore, I knew it was a good one. Welcomed with a smile and a hello, and transported into a place full of community, inclusivity, and obviously BOOKS! + parking is easy, street parking in the front as well as many lots, one in officials right behind the store + they have new and used books + they have many different inclusive community events in their store, follow their Instagram to be kept up to date!! + this is a non profit bookstore + aside from books they also have different items for sale from different community members/artists. From bookmarks, to bags, to pins, to stickers, to jewelry, etc ! Love the support of local creatives! + big tables for reading or co working hours as well + they have a community fridge and pantry. Free to those who need it. Whether it's some hygiene items or food items, if someone is struggling, or just needs something and they have it, they are welcome to take it. No questions asked. This is community in action. They take donations of food items, both refrigerated and non perishables, as well as hygiene items, baby items, paper goods, pet food, toiletries, kitchen cleaning, etc + honestly just love a place that is for the community and continually gives back. Makes me support them even more!

I've been to this place at least 3 times now and By Golly! I thought I had already penned a review. Great spot to find all sorts of books. They also have used books here as well. I saw a little jar of recommendations that they ask the customers to write in for book suggestions I think that is a great idea. Kiddo's section in the back is very inviting. Service is always kind and friendly. In fact... the first time I stopped in I had a 'sit-down' with the owner who wished to discuss what sort of books I liked so that he could recommend something on their shelves. It was uber cool. Plenty of bibliophile gifts here as well. Respectfully Reviewed.

Great find in the used book section

LOVE this bookstore! I've been looking for more "third places" where I can meet and hang out with friends without loud noises or feeling pressured to drink. Underdog Bookstore is fabulous not just as a bookstore with a great, curated selection of books and gifts, but also a community space. There's a central table where people can gather and chat, a play corner in the back for younger children, and even a jigsaw puzzle laid out for folks to enjoy. The staff are always incredibly sweet every time. I like that they highlight "underdog" authors, as I'm trying to read more underrepresented stories. They also have a great shelf of discounted used books that range from 25% off to only $1 bargains! I always buy way too many books when I visit but can never regret it. Glad there's a great community spot in the neighborhood now.

Is this store dog friendly? Either way I cannot wait to visit.

Yes! We are dog friendly for all well-behaved doggies. If our own pugs are in the window, they may be a little noisy. But, they are in the process of being trained.

The books in the front are more with pop culture and famous books that maybe considered for the "coffee table" books. Also in the front , are the stationary items, cute Knick-knacks and some blind boxes. The Japanese light novels & manga section was larger vs the Arcadia location. Plus there was surplus amount of certain mangas that are currently popular to ensure enough is in stock. In general, I find these books very decently priced. I have , in the past, asked them for a particular book if they have in stock, they'll check to see if they have it or not or will direct me to where it is in the store.

They always have a ton of pens imported from Japan and they even have the little sticker tag on the pen itself in Japanese. Huge fan of the Uniball Zento Pens as I draw from time to time. I know it's great to support local stores, but I do wish they were a bit more competitive with pricing, if a book is only 10% more expensive here and I'm in the area, sure I'll buy it at Kinokuniya, but when the same exact book brand new is 40% cheaper on Amazon, I can't justify the purchase. It would be cool if membership allowed for price matching. Overall, this is probably the best Japanese book/manga shop you can find aside from the Book Off in Gardena.

Once you find it, though, you're greeted by this cozy little coffee and book shop that feels like a secret hideaway. They have a really nice selection of books to browse or buy while enjoying a drink, with a handful of seating options: from regular tables to comfy chairs and sofas. It's the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time and accidentally spend a few hours reading. I ordered an espresso over ice, and honestly... their coffee is pretty damn good. I wasn't expecting much from a place that doesn't primarily specialize in coffee, but I was pleasantly surprised. The jasmine green tea was also really good and refreshing, especially on a hot summer day. The ambiance is probably my favorite part--quiet, cozy, and inviting without feeling too stuffy. Definitely a great little spot to escape to, grab a drink, and browse some books. Would absolutely come back!

Unfortunately, my experience this past December left me with a bad impression. I stopped in to buy Christmas gifts and while I was being helped by the employee at the register, I asked if they happened to have small handouts explaining the properties of a few crystals that came from the glass shelves. They weren't sure, so they asked the older employee/manager standing nearby. His response was rude. He came over and said they would have to print one out and didn't have time to do that. I wasn't expecting anyone to go out of their way to print something--I was just asking in case they had copies available at the front. A polite "no, we don't" would have been fine. Instead, the sharp tone was embarrassing, especially since it happened in front of other customers, the employee helping me, and my partner. I still purchased my items, but the interaction left me hesitant to return. This is a shop that should feel warm, welcoming, and relaxing considering what it offers. Nobody should leave feeling uncomfortable after a simple question.
