Since the new owners took over, I have been there twice a month, every other week, because everything has been top notch. The food is phenomenal, we find ourselves comparing every where we go to Goos, and quite honestly NO ONE can compare. Went to Goos for dinner Saturday evening arriving around 4:30. Ordered our dinner around 4:35 and got our salad from their so called salad bar. Very limited selection and one serving spoon for all the dressings. Waited patiently for our meal. At around 5:25 asked the waitress about our meal. She said they were really busy with take outs. 5:45 asked the waitress to cancel our order and bill us for salads and drinks. Management came screaming that they were just a small business and if we wanted faster service to go to McDonalds, get out and never come back. Believe me I will never go back and i will be sure to tell everyone I know about this terrible place. read more

We've been going to Goos for years and they have the best 20 inch Hoagies anywhere until last night. When I called, I found out they changed the ownership so I asked a lot of questions about the Italian hoagie. They told me five times or more nothing's change. She told me they use the same recipes for everything. That was a lie too. They changed the bun & it was barely toasted, there was 1/4 of the meat that the old owner used to put on. The onions were sliced so thin you couldn't taste them. You could barely see the provolone cheese. If the hoagie was so skimpy, I can imagine what the rest of the food will be like. Goos will never last now with new ownership. That's the last time I will go there. They are cash only now too. read more

A multitude of red flags and experience I don't hope to duplicate. Cash only business. High prices for menu items. You'd be thinking the food must be really good? It was not. Pasta sauce was thin and flavorless. Garlic bread tasted like popcorn. Very odd salad bar. Service was very slow or inattentive. The place had the ambiance of a sad bar, dimly lit. I would not suggest this resturant to anyone. But if you were forced to go, get the "Lighter" items because it will be cheaper. Not much, but it helps. read more

This place is out of a 70's show, they had there tables separated by lattice and we sat almost on an old metal radiator. I ordered the Veal Parmigiana, the Veal had a strange taste, the cheese on top looked like plastic,the sauce was flavorless , the pasta had no taste at all this for $20 some dollars, a joke of a salad bar, and canned soda, so no refills, and they only take cash. I would avoid this place unless you like subpar food for expensive price. I will not return when I come back to Pennsylvania to visit. read more

Shabby atmosphere, quality of service and product(especially pizza) has really gone downhill. Prices go up, cocktails are outrageously priced, $3.75/bottled beer, $5.50-$6.50 for wine , (boxed)(don't even get a full glass!), Shrimp cocktail, shrimp dishes are with skimpy small shrimp. Pizza has really gone downhill in the past 6 months, complaints are brushed off, no resolution offered. Just an all around bad, sad experience. Especially knowing that the Original Owners/Operators worked very hard to establish the business, actually worked in the business, were very hospitable and appreciative of their customers. Just don't do it. We ordered takeout and should have immediately hung up as soon as they answered the phone. She was completely unintelligible. She took my order seeming annoyed the entire time. The food was ready when promised, but was so badly packaged that it leaked all over the car on the way home. The home made pasta and meatballs was neither good nor bad and could have used more sauce. The steak tips on the other hand were awful. Ordered medium rare, but cooked to death, they looked and I presume tasted much like dog food. People in our party ordered the chicken parmesan, said that it was the worst that they had ever tasted. Home briefly for the holidays, my mom wanted me to treat her dinner. Her first choice, a very popular restaurant in Mt. Pleasant, was closed for a private event, so we ended up crossing the street and coming here. This didn't seem like a bad idea at the time since I remember seeing Goo's on the corner ever since I was a kid. Their longevity should be a testament to their quality food, right? Boy did we get this one wrong. Seating is set up in L-shape, so one can choose from booths all along the right wall or head left into an alcove area where there are 3 tables. We opted for one of the free booths, but the waitress came over with some other patrons and explained that they wanted to move from their booth to the one we chose, but we were welcome to their booth. We made the change and within a few minutes quickly found out why the other people moved. Apparently a family was seated behind that booth and their children couldn't restrain from slapping the table, kicking the seats, rocking, yelling out loud, etc. It was only worse that the parents or other family members actively encouraged this behavior. So we moved once again to that alcove area which was also an unfortunate choice given how cold it was there. Being next to the street and the main door, there could not have been any insulation because we noticed the drop in temperature. Service was very scattered. While we saw the waitress when we came in, I am not sure if we ever saw her again the rest of the night. Instead, we had a couple of guys from the bar coming by once in awhile and asking if we needed anything. They looked clearly put out and yet it did not seem like there were many people here at all. Very strange. The food was disastrous. I mean, I thought I chose the safest item on the menu, the lasagna. My mom opted instead for the wine marinated steak tips. These are fairly quick orders to prepare, but we ended up waiting more than a half hour to receive them. Inexplicably slow service. My lasagna was the worst I have ever had in my life, and it is so remarkable because all of the different mistakes they made in preparing it. If you tried to make a bad lasagna, it would not have been as bad this one was. It was served as a large narrow rectangle that was less one inch thick. The photo is attached; have you ever seen a lasagna this thin? It was a single layer. It was noticeably burnt on the edges. The texture of the pasta noodle varied considerably over its length. Near the edges it was sometimes rubbery, sometimes crispy, and inwards it was sometimes chewy and otherwise unremarkable. I am puzzled at how they created so many textures in one sample. The ricotta was a tough monolithic curd of cheese. The marinara sauce was only added after the lasagna was reheated and was not part of the original dish. The sauce itself was heavily flavored with inexpensive Parmesan cheese. Not enjoyable at all, and every mistake that could be made was made in preparing this dish. Awful. The marinated steak tips were considerably better by comparison (I sampled these), but even then, they were just passable. The meat was noticeably chewy (overcooked and under-marinated). The saving grace was that the drinks were cheap. Like two glasses of wine and a bottle of beer for $9 cheap. The ambience was nonexistent. I mean even discounting for the random loud family, there was nothing interesting about this place. No background music at all, so the restaurant was much louder than it needed to be. The walls were sparsely adorned with advertisements for American beers and nothing else. There was really nothing to fixate the eyes upon. A dreadful choice. Next time I am going to choose the restaurant. My mom might not like "fancy" places, but at least the food is always edible. Oh, one final warning, this place is CASH ONLY. My husband and I decided to stop by and give Goo's Corner Cafe a try. A friend had recommended it to us....unfortunately, we shouldn't have listened to him. The place is so dark and gloomy, and is in serious need of some decorating tips, or at least a fresh coat of paint on the walls. It seriously reminded me of a set for a 70's B movie, it was that bad. The food was mediocre. We both ordered the fish sandwich, meh, nothing special. There were no free refills on drinks, they were served out of cans. My husband detests places that do this, as he usually has 2-3 drinks with his meal. The prices weren't that bad, but not really worth it either. We tried the place, but it's safe to say, we won't be returning. read more

Not sure how Goo's has so many weak reviews. I go here quite often and have NEVER had a single bad experience. I always end up getting one of two things, steak or scrod. They are so unbelievably delicious! I love the cellars atmosphere, it's so old Hollywood/Good fellas feeling. Always remember to bring cash, even though they have an ATM at the restaurant however they are cash only. (Their pizza is really good too and so is the stuffed peppers- they're huge!) My wife and I thoroughly disagree. Goos is her favorite place to go and eat pizza when we are in PA. When you go to Goos you need to go to the basement which is where the real restaurant is found. You need to order either the pizza, the steak, or the the sausage pasta which is quite spicy and tasty. Yes they only take cash but that is not unusual for some restaurants that do not want to pay the Visa/Mastercard fee. There salad bar is small but decent enough. You get plenty of portions regardless of what you order. read more

Staff was pleasant enough and the salad bar was mediocre at best. Ordered bacon burgers expecting the taste of grilled beef but instead got a tasteless unidentified meat patty. There appeared to be some sort of white filler in it. When asked I was told it was pure black angus, but that must've been one sick and dying cow to taste like that! From outside I was steered away for a couple years because there were no windows, but some co-workers recommended their steaks pretty highly so one night my wife and I decided to give them a chance. Inside revealed a bar, and small seating area. The downstairs is a little more spacious, and includes a small salad bar area as well. My wife chose the fettuccine Alfredo and I went for the New York strip with roasted potatoes on the side and ordered it smothered with mushrooms and onions. There were salads included before hand and a basket of Italian bread came. Just as we finished, our food was arriving. The steak was cooked perfectly and was delicious! It was very juicy and flavorful, and seasoned well. It was in the top 3 I've had in my life for sure. When they said smothered they were not kidding either, tons of mushrooms and onions were provided with the steak. The roasted potatoes were great too, definitely a new favorite side. They were buttery and crisp with a strong garlic flavor that complimented the steak well. The service was good. Probably a slow night but the staff was very personable and talkative, also polite. Our drinks were never empty. They were cash only but they have an ATM upstairs at the end of the restaurant now so it wasn't really a big deal for us. So Goo's....classic divey western PA bar with good neon sign outside and just what i was hoping for on a cold winter night in the laurel highlands. I had high expectations but they were not met. The staff were super friendly but the food was just plain bad. The pizza was the best option but it didnt blow me away by any stretch and the veal parm we ordered was tasteless and under cooked. It's not some new fancy place, but the chicken parm was very good. The red sauce is what I would call an authentic Italian sauce, not some run of the mill generic sauce found at so many other places, The red sauce on the chicken parm was good however the pizza wasn't so swift. I don't know if they use the same red sauce for the meals and pizza, but like I said the pizza wasn't so swift. We will be back though read more

Quite frankly Ibwas taken aback by the number of negative reviews and almost chose another spot. I am quite a distance from Goos and I had not been there in 4 or 5 years. I accessed Yelp merely to verify business hours. After reading the reviews I called a friend that has had a business down the street for 35 years and has lived there since he was born. He said he had been there recently and it was great and he had never heard any negative comments. I always order the NY Strip medium rare, salad w/house Italian, and mixed. Vegetables. The steak was an 1 1/2 thick done to perfection and I couldn't finish it. It is important to note that I have assisted a caterer for years with Steak Fryes. We have done as 700 Steaks and were always highly complimented and requested back. Goo's Strip Steak ranks among the best. The service was great and their timing was good. The ambiance was not noticeable so if that's your thing it's not spectacular but you can't eat ambiance. 2 Steaks, sides, salads, mushroom & onions on the side and 4 beers- $71- quite amazing and quite a value. Goo's is a classic dive bar eatery in a small town USA. If you are going to a place for ambiance, white tablecloth, button up tux shirt service, it is not the place for you. If you are going to a place for great food, and a lot of it, you may be pleasantly surprised. My spouse and I have been going to Goo's since before our 10 year old was born. Tonight we celebrated Valentines day along with her 10th birthday at our annual Goo's dinner. Over many years the only thing about the place that has changed is its prices, which are fair based on mark up on everything from poultry to beef in the industry. The quality is absolutely consistent. It is a casual but quaint café with a bar on one side and tables and booths on the other. We started with the peppers and garlic in oil, let me tell you, it is so good that we intentionally order a large serving so that we can take half of it home for a second course. Our main event was the marinated strip steak for approx. 25 a piece. It is absolutely delectable, served on a piping hot platter you will receive the most mouth watering piece of perfection, it looked to be about 12 oz of tender beef. Along with the entrée you receive a house salad that has a variety of veggies, very soft Italian bread and butter, and your choice of a side item, I always go for the pasta, it's classic and authentic tasting. Many folks rave and rave about their pizza, and I'm sure its excellent, however, I stick with my favorite annually, and crave this holiday feast! The staff is efficient, laid back and friendly.
