Thanks to Goose Island Crossfit for seeing me through my two pregnancies with healthy babies. I joined GICF at 8 months pregnant with my first baby and worked out until 4 days before delivery with both kids. While I've done crossfit since 2015, in becoming a mom I had to modify, slow down, pause, recover, and practically start over from scratch physically and mentally. A lot of times I am retesting and resetting my limits and working through boundaries that weren't there before kids. Every time I'm in the gym I'm giving it all I've got that day despite consistent sleeplessness, overstimulation from toddler energy, ft work, pt school, household management, or whatever the world throw at me that day. It takes a lot of persistence and patience but I'm lucky to have the support of Goose Island members and trainers to work through it. To all the momfitters our there, keep up the great work for you. This place is absolutely amazing. When I first walked into Goose Island CrossFit almost three years ago, I couldn't do a single pull-up, run a single mile, and had never picked up a barbell in my life. I admit I was a bit intimidated and almost quit after my first class, but I am SO glad that I didn't. The coaches are great at helping newcomers scale the movements to the best of their ability to make sure you are not overwhelmed, and as you progress (which you will), they push you to be the best athlete that you can be. I've been a member here since the summer of 2018. I started with a 6 week challenge, which includes unlimited classes and a nutrition plan. Was very eager to join the gym full time after that. A little background about me, I've fought with weight issues my entire life. Before I joined the gym I tried one last effort to get my weight in control and overall be healthier, at that time I was 275 pounds. It's currently November 2018 and I'm at 244 pounds and dropping. If you are a lifter, do not get thrown off by the "CrossFit in the title. These guys are professional, courteous, just damn good people. So I've become an orphan to this Crossfit after my box of five years unexpectedly closed. I've been coming to Goose Island since the beginning of January and have been thoroughly impressed. They have a lot of classes in the evenings and even a Sunday morning class! I've been pretty happy with the workouts. So far they appear to be more chipper esq rather than one rep max testing type stuff. They have a 2nd floor space that is pretty empty that I have LOVED using after class to foam roll and do accessory work. Noah (the owner) has been overwhelmingly accommodating to us and seems like an all around nice guy. The coaches I've went to have all been good and the people seem nice. What makes a great cross fit gym is the coaching and the community. This what Goose Island Crossfit provides, while also providing great assorment of equipment and a nice location with parking. As a visiting exercise junkie, I was lucky to stumble upon a great find on my first shot. Their coaching is a top notch. They care, encourage and talk you through any questions one might have during the workout. On my deadlift, they helped tweak my form to allow me to set a PR for myself. I despised everything about crossfit and "crossfitters" - and then I came here. Noah LaPorte, the owner and one of the coaches, makes everything about joining, conditioning, and growing actually enjoyable. You'll feel less like a "member" and more like family or a friend. I was relatively well versed (so I thought) in physical conditioning, weightlifting, and form - I was mistaken. Everyday I am learning new technique and form. The best part? I'm guided every step of the way until I've learned the proper and safe movements and form. I've never been so challenged, and I've never been around such a positive groups of people that help you push yourself behind your limits daily. So I just started last week and I've been about three times. I won't lie and say that I wasn't hesitant with the various rumors that you hear about Crossfit. What quickly changed my mind was the attitude of Noah the owner and chief instructor. Noah works with each person as though their an individual. He asks questions, he engages and he wants to make sure that you're getting the best experience for you. I have a few pre-existing injuries and Noah has been great about working around those all the while insuring that I'm getting an amazing workout. Most importantly he recognizes that most people aren't familiar with all the cross fit moves and he works diligently with you on your technique to help avoid injury. As for the facilities, it's a nice box. The equipment is well maintained and clean and everything is pretty orderly and ready to go. The people are friendly and always willing to help. I discovered Goose Island Crossfit (GICF) due to a change in my work schedule and job location. I commute back and forth to work, so I had to be strategic in choosing which location to workout. I tried 2 other CrossFit gyms in Chicago before I chose a membership at GICF. The main determining factor is the FREE available parking for all its members - I can't stress enough how important that is! Other pros include the friendliness of staff/members, plentiful workout equipment, and the numerous class times. Everyone was also pretty easy-going, kind, and always willing to help. My work schedule will be changing soon, which bittersweet because I'm really going to miss the gym and the people. read more

Goose Island Crossfit is my home away from home when I'm in Chicago on business - I can't recall the last time I haven't stopped in, multiple times even, during a several-day stay. The facilities and equipment suit my needs perfectly, and Noah and his staff are excellent, attentive individuals who really go above and beyond to make even a non-regular feel like they're welcome. From everything I've experienced, there's a real sense of community and encouragement here. My regular gym is relocating and we're currently sharing space with Goose Island Crossfit. I haven't actually taken any Crossfit classes I've only observed. It's a nice space and the owner is really friendly. The typical Crossfit weights, and machines are there. Small restrooms and I wouldn't want to wait to shower after a workout. Good thing I live within walking distance and can go home. After observing some of the classes I'm not exactly motivated to try Crossfit (just a personal preference) but everyone there loves it. read more

I've been doing CrossFit for over 4 years, and this gym has every piece of equipment you could possibly need - Rogue rig, kettlebells, top-notch Olympic weightlifting plates and bars, dumbbells, rowers, sleds, rings, medicine balls, and even a sledgehammer. However, what really makes this place awesome is the coaching. Noah, Johnathan, and Sara are all great coaches with a lot of experience in their fields of expertise (Noah & John are certified through CrossFit, Sara is a high-level Olympic weightlifter), and are extremely approachable. If you have a question, they can answer it. If you want help with a movement, no problem. If you have nutrition questions, they're available to help you reach your goals. The location has parking (!!!), is close to Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and 90/94. It's a bit of a walk from the Red Line/Brown Line, but I've done it before and it's totally manageable. read more

What is Crossfit? I'm not claiming to have the all-encompassing answer for what is Crossfit, but what I can do is tell you my experience with Crossfit and more specifically Goose Island Crossfit. I admit, I was one of the Crossfit skeptics after seeing the numerous YouTube videos showing Crossfit bloopers and mishaps. However, that all changed on one fateful day when I was walking out of a Parkour class at Goose Island Crossfit and ran into an old friend who happened to be there taking Crossfit classes. He invited me to join him for a class and I thought why not. I'm always open to new things and felt like I needed to try Crossfit out before I could have the authority to critique it. A day later I drop in for a Saturday class not know what to expect. I'm ready for flying barbells and all sorts of reckless behavior. Not the case at all. It was a very well organized and methodical workout. The workout consisted of a warm up then a gymnastic skill review. On this day we worked on handstands, a skill I've always wanted learn but never knew where to begin. After that came the MetCon, which is a hi-intensity, full body, and non-stop workout. Overall, I felt something different that I didn't get from my normal workouts at other gyms. There was such an amazing, overflowing energy in the room of people striving to be their best. There were numerous points during the MetCon workout that I would have quit if not for the people around helping to push me past my perceived limits. GI Crossfit is a real community and that was something I had yet to experience elsewhere in my fitness journey. I chatted with the owner, Noah, after the class and he asked me what I thought about the class and what my goals were not just with fitness but overall in life. It was very evident that he truly cared about my success and would help me get there. From Skeptic to Regular It only took a week before I became fully addicted to Crossfit. The exercises are fun, they are unpredictable, and they take you to your breaking point every time. I never considered myself a masochist, but for some reason the pain has become pleasurable and I keep coming back for more. I guess what really keeps me going are the results! My body looks and feels amazing, I'm mentally sharper, and I perform better in other my other activities such as football and Parkour. Bottom line, Goose Island Crossfit has really helped to enhance my life. The instructors are knowledgeable, highly skilled, and are masters of their craft. They take the time to ensure you have proper form, which will keep you safe and improve your results. Man what a ride! I've been trying to get into better shape and in a more sustainable / healthy routine for a while now. I've tried multiple gym memberships, Classpass, Groupons and none of them really worked out for me. After I ran the marathon in 2016 I kind of fell off the healthy wagon and kind of lost my ways. By the end of 2017, I was only able to fit into one of my pants and knew things had to change. I was lucky enough to find Goose Island Crossfit and start their 6 week challenge. I would have never imagined that the results could have been this successful. I lost about 16 pounds and 6.2% body fat in 6 weeks and am so grateful to Noah and his team for helping me find my way again. It was one of the best gym environments I've ever been in and loved working with all the top-notch instructors. Because classes were small, they were able to really dedicate and focus on each individual's development. Plus all the people who work out here are super friendly. They were always willing to help out when I was struggling with a new equipment or exercise. Hands down the best! There have been many that have said the crossfit community is someone cultish (and other places it kinda is), but honestly at Goose Island nothing can be further from the truth. It is one hundred percent a familial experience. I have competed in martial arts (MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai, Tae Kwan Do) for most of my years , and at 32 after shoulder surgery, and a number of other injuries, I have never been faster and/or stronger in my life. Not only that, but improvements to many of the mobility and technical short comings I have with lifting, primarily because there is constant attention to form. So despite being in one gym or another pretty much every day. I have remained healthy since walking through the door (with the exception of a mild pulled hamstring that was completely outside of the gym AND a goose island coach actually forewarned me NOT to do it, yet my ego took over lol) From owner to coaches, goose island has definitely worked its way to being a third family (Carlson Gracie Jr/Andre Madiz being the second). Great location with parking, yes, yes I said parking! The trainers are awesome and the members are really great people. The atmosphere is about teamwork and support. No one is going to be in your face telling you how much you suck, no way. This gym is all about "you can do it", "you got it" and "you're awesome". Most importantly, when you walk in they call you by your first name and make you feel as if you are joining a family. Some of the members who are parents will bring their kids in on the weekend, which is always a great option. Overall, the story is, when you work out with a group of people who want you to succeed, whether that group be the trainers or other members, you WILL succeed, hands town. I have worked out by myself in my building's gym for almost a year. I did okay and lost some weight, but never was able to take myself to the next level and plateaued quickly. With a month at this gym under my belt, I have lost over ten pounds and can clearly see my goals in my NEAR, yes NEAR future. I've worked out and exercised fairly regularly for the majority of my life at many different types of gyms including personal training and group conditioning classes. I have now been a member at Goose Island for about 9 months. I've always tended to respond best to high intensity training but avoided crossfit gyms mostly for the "dude-bro" atmosphere. Goose Island doesn't have this feeling at all. I really like this gym and feel very comfortable there. Here's why: Coaching Staff - very approachable and is committed to ensuring your safety. Long-term health is clearly a priority at Goose Island. Mobility and stretching are integrated in every session and the coaches closely watch and instruct on proper technique for all movements. Workout effectiveness - I can lift more weight, run faster, and have the lowest body fat percentage now than I ever had in my life. There is no doubt in my mind that this would not have been possible without the careful technique coaching and workout programming at Goose Island. Community - coaching staff and other members are more like friends than other clients. I've never experienced such a strong sense of mutual support and friendship at any other gym. I look forward to every session at Goose Island even though I know how intense the workouts are going to be because I'm working out with friends. Performance Data - Goose Island records all performance history using an online app (Wodify). This may sound insignificant but it's great to be able to actually see the progress you're making. Many other crossfit gyms only use a whiteboard. Noah's friendly and you really get out of this gym what you put into it. My friends tried it and didn't show up most days which made them like it less. Anyone who's trying Crossfit for the first time will like it a lot more if they're able to show up almost everyday. Otherwise it's hard for your stamina to catch up. So I am and always have been one that needs to force myself to exercise. I have never really enjoyed exercise but at the same time know that it is an essential part of life if I want to live to a ripe old age, sigh. Well in recent years I've dutifully gone about exercising, not really thinking about what I was doing and how I could injure myself while doing it, just doing "what everybody else does" so I bought an app to get me off my butt and work up to a 5k run. Sounded easy enough. Well, then I got shin splints and an unidentified pain in my right foot started to develop, hm, weird. So I stopped doing that and joined a gym thinking I would just try out some different exercises, maybe ask a trainer there what I should be doing. Well, then I learned the very annoying fact that most trainers at traditional gyms are incredibly pushy, uncomfortable to be around for someone like me who does not enjoy exercise, want to suck every penny out of you and won't give you professional opinions unless you hire them for sessions of being uncomfortable and exhausted both physically and socially. So I kept trying to do the gym thing solo and I became one of those people who have a gym membership and waste money every month on it because I hardly ever used it. I was bored and was honestly just going to say I go, oh and to use the nice shower facilities, but that wasn't enough to keep me motivated enough to go on a truly consistent basis. Fast forward about a year and a half and the foot pain worsened and worsened and after seeing a podiatrist the nameless foot pain was named. I had a nerve problem in my foot and needed treatment, exercising was going to be even tougher and more limited unless I did something about it. At this point is when I decided to join Goose Island Crossfit. I had a few friends who had done the whole CrossFit thing and I had seen how those friends who I knew once upon a time were like me and HATED exercise now truly loved it. I had heard them talk about working with trainers at their gym who (now brace yourself here this is a shocker) were normal people that yes loved fitness but they also made you feel comfortable and have... FUN.... While working out. I thought it sounded weird and a bit cult-like, but fitness cultish, but I couldn't deny how happy my friends were not to mention the physical results I saw with my own 2 eyes. They were happy and satisfied both physically and socially, a foreign concept to me in the realm of exercise. It's been almost 2 months now of me being at Goose Island Crossfit and guess what? I actually like exercise, ME, the I HATE EXERCISE girl! I love going to classes with my friends, being able to work with them and actually do something more than meaningless cycling to nowhere for hours on end. It's just FUN, Noah the owner who creates the work outs for each day does a great job of incorporating all kinds of unique ways to get me moving and, well laughing and having fun while exercising. Like for instance the hammer... It's a giant hammer that you swing on to a giant solid block like you would if you were chopping wood, now come on who wouldn't like pretending they are a dwarf in Lord of the Rings cutting their wood for the fire that evening?? Ok maybe that last bit is just me, point being... I am having fun while exercising for the first time in my life, and I seriously thought that that would only happen if hell froze over. As to the foot prob, this is where every ounce of me wants to scream the praises of Noah LaPorte, he has painstakingly researched my condition and has carefully adjusted each work out to not only accommodate this problem but also correct it in the long term. Programming is set up so that it is equally challenging for all participants, regardless of whether they are a beginner athletes, competitors or somewhere in between. For beginners, the classes are accessible and well coached, so they aren't as intimidating as ones at other gyms. I recently participated in the six week challenge. I hadn't worked out consistently in more than six years, and now I'm excitedly going to the gym 5-6 days/week. Noah and his team changed my life. The challenge provided structure and accountability while still being extremely approachable and fun! I've been doing CrossFit for about 2 years and Goose Island is a fantastic box. I have to work out at a gym I look forward to going to otherwise I'd never go. Coaching: CrossFit hinges on good coaching and Noah, the owner, is a fantastic coach. He's passionate about mobility and will work with you before or after class if you have an injury you're receiving from. The WODs are well thought out and the coaches are always helping you fine tune your movements. They use Wodify instead of a whiteboard so you can keep track of your workouts and PRs electronically. Community: The camaraderie it what makes me look forward to going to the WOD after a long day at work. Everybody is friendly and happy to see you succeed. If you've never CrossFitted before start here because they'll go out of their way to make you feel welcomed. It's not unusual to finish an evening workout and walk over to Goose Island or the Tasting Room for a beer with friends and coaches. Location/Facility: There's free parking! You probably wouldn't expect to find a gym along the river behind Binnys it's not difficult to find but you do have to be looking for it. I write this review 7 days before my one year anniversary of doing Crossfit. I moved to Chicago from Houston, TX January of 2016. Before moving I was pretty active and would attend a standard gym regularly about 3-4 time a week. After moving to Chicago I tried to stick to the same schedule but found my self feeling a little stuck as I wasn't sure exactly what work outs I should be doing. I searched constantly online for different plans and WAS DEFINITELY NOT GOING TO DO CROSSFIT. I didn't want the cult, I didn't want to post all my work outs on social media so people knew I worked out. But then I decided to try it here, and I would say it was probably one of the best decisions I've made since moving to Chicago. The FAMILY that you find at this box is like no other. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming and its family owned and operated. All the cult stuff aside the facilities are great with an a parking lot for those that drive, clean towels, great locker rooms with a big mirror so you can see all your gainz. Also all Rogue equipment which is what they use at the Crossfit Games. Meaning every lift you do then you feel like a real athlete. Overall I would say I like the place. I'm from out of a town and was looking to drop in for about a week or two and I am glad I found this gym. Once I found this gym, I called and spoke with Noah. He was welcoming and was very generous with me being a drop in. The next day I went in to get a workout and was impressed with the overall layout of the box. They have all the equipment you need, a room for mobility, and other welcoming members. The programming was awesome, some strength and a great metcon daily. Each day I went there I was left impressed with the WOD. The coaches were awesome. They both had good attitudes, both were very interested on improving your performance, and most importantly they were extremely knowledgeable on movements and mobility. Each day I went in there, I learned at least one new thing about a lift I thought I knew everything about. Overall I really enjoyed the gym, and was glad I got a chance to drop in. The atmosphere and community that Noah has created here makes this box (another word for crossfit places) a fun place to grow and learn from. The programming is a great mix of weightlifting, metcon, gymnastics, and more. I've also learned a lot about mobility and recovery from Noah, John, Alex, and the other coaches. You can tell that a lot of thought goes into designing a well-rounded program that allows all types of athletes to increase their level of fitness. All the coaches here are fun, but most importantly professional. They really emphasize form and safety. As a dedicated yogi, crossfit never crossed my mind as I viewed it as something that would make me big and bulkly (nothing wrong with that, just not what I've been looking for). However, I was proven wrong. My experiences with Goose Island Crossfit have been nothing but awesome!
