Lidl's shopping experience is sort of halfway between ALDI and a retail grocery store. They have an on-site bakery and a great selection of produce, plus two long aisles of frozen items including great seafood and prepared stuff. The meats here are also excellent, though a bit more expensive than ALDI. I'm a fan of the Lidl fizzy water and that was my main shop here today. In stock and priced right. I'm very pleased. We should have known that we were going to be in for an interesting experience here when we pulled into the parking lot. Local law enforcement just happened to be on the scene. We honestly don't know what was going on in here, but there was a big manager presence at the front of the store near customer service. We walked up to return our items and had a bit of a wait as the confusion of what was going on was starting to subside. Once we were acknowledged that we were there it was still a few minutes before we were assisted. The girl that assisted us was very nice, and a bit funny, even if it were a dry wit she had. We went through the motions of the return and when it came to my dad receiving the funds back she gave my dad three choices. Gift card, back on the debit card, or cash. Cash was the option as we all know that it can take a few days for it to return to your account. Throughout the transaction we got to witness a funny exchange between the employees. While all the hubbub was going on with law enforcement an associate came to the counter asking for the cart key. One of the many managers that was dealing with the hubbub was informed by the girl helping us of the need. The manager looked a bit frantic while searching the counter for the said cart key. Exasperated, the manager asked where the cart key would be. The girl, with as much unenthusiastic sarcasm simply replied with, "It's hanging on a hook that says 'cart key'." I think there was a roll of the eyes in there too. I'm not sure. I kind of chuckled to myself until we walked away so I could laugh. I think this is a prime example of how competent some managers are in any given setting.

Add the name suggests, it carries items that might be overstock, discontinued seaonal, or specialty items. It does carry regular grocery items like produce milk eggs bread and meat. The prices are generally lower than traditional markets. The produce is fresh and the meats looked really good. They had 90% lean ground beef, grass fed for under $5.00/lb the day I was there. When I mention "seconds" it doesn't mean it's spoiled but that it might not be that perfect shape. The potatoes for example might not be that perfect oval shape but were still harvested from the same farm at the same time. When I said this is a place for browsers it's because you are never fully sure what they will have on any given day. On the day I was there there must have been 20+ different brands of hot sauces. I found some King Arthur baking items I could only find on line.

The only thing I still can't get used to is the shopping carts that require a coin. I understand the idea behind it, but it does feel a bit outdated sometimes. It would be nice if they found a more convenient solution for that. Other than that, it's a great place to shop if you want good value without sacrificing quality.

My second complaint is regarding produce. I ordered several items of produce. All the fresh produce was not so fresh. A bag of fresh spinach was half rotten, bananas spotted & bruised & avocados that were already way gone. The sweet potatoes I had ordered were very small & wrinkled. Also received celery with ribs that were brown. As a senior citizen I order delivered food & trusting the shopper to provide fresh food to me. I tip well & am often disappointed with what I receive. If you open the doors you should be ready in all departments to service your customers no matter what time it is. I have been shopping for more that forty years at weis markets in maryland and have never had this happen be for if they do not want to do the job and they are in and being paid they should find a new job.
