We visited here on our first night in London. It is near our Airbnb and recommend by our host. The Ham Hock Terrine and Smoked salmon starters were very good. The cod was good and healthy but the pork chop was overcooked and tough for our taste. Loved the British Cheese plate for dessert but really wanted to try the Sticky Toffee Pudding. Sadly, they were out of it on our visit. Service was good and there is definitely a local clientele. Everyone was vibrant, friendly and seemed to be having a great evening. Cool spot off the beat & path near the Borough Market. Food was good, looks like a great wine bar but we didn't partake.

A visit to the Boot and Flogger wine bar is like stepping into a time warp. The place has the feel of an old private members club, dimly lit with wood panelled walls and Chesterfield sofas. Old fashioned decorations and used Champagne bottles in every size add to the character. Generally everyone in the Boot will be wearing a suit, so consider dressing up a bit if you plan a visit as you may feel more comfortable. Having said this, the staff are very welcoming and friendly and you will not be looked down on if you dress otherwise. The wine list is like a book, and includes an excellent selection of good wines and from around the world, plus champagnes. Don't expect the wine to be cheap (expect to pay £20+ for something decent, £35 for the house Champagne), but considering the quality of the wine on offer you can't really argue. They also serve food, such as meat platters, ploughmen's lunches, a selection of cheeses, and several hot meat dishes. The food is nothing to write home about, but serves as a means to soak up the booze. Crackers and pickled garlic are complimentary. The clientèle generally visit in the late afternoon, and it closes at 8pm. There is no music, so can be recommended as a place to have a quiet conversation. Allegedly the Boot and Flogger is the only bar in the country not to require an alcohol licence due to a historical quirk. The owner of the Boot and Flogger used to own the other local Davis wines bars, but held onto the Boot after they were sold off. Recommended if you love wine, and fancy something different to the usual wine bar clones. read more

Excellent name, lots of character and some amazing truffle mac and cheese to boot! We were just out of an amazing play at The Bunker and we needed to recede to a cool, dark place to replenish. This hit the spot for sure. Off the beaten track and the kind of place we wouldn't have spotted without the Yelp app, this felt like an Oxbridge-college high-table experience. This is a great little place to wind down after a harried experience in a busy Borough Market. It has a very Victorian feel about it, with leather chairs and an all-wood interior. The wines (there are a few beers) are reasonable and come from an extensive selection. The food is excellent, but don't come here for a gastronomic delight. I love this place. The old oak interior was moved from a much older pub on Borough High Street and installed in this still very old warehouse. It feels like a Dickensian film set inside. It's a Davy's wine bar, but oh so much more. The menu is old English, you can drink champagne from little tankards, they have a 'garden' and a fine cigar collection that you can enjoy in it. It is full of old world class and old world charm and it is quintessentially a living piece of historic London. Interestingly, there is a large steel gate opposite in front of what is now no more than a car park, but used to be a graveyard. It is covered in flowers as a memorial to the Winchester Geese, who are buried there the prostitutes that worked for the bishop of Winchester in the stews here in centuries gone by. The Boot and Flogger is a great place to take your mum and a great place to take a date, I love it. If you're in the area, go, if you're not in the area, get on a train to London Bridge and go. read more

I love this place. When I was working in London Bridge I went there and was introduced to the French Fleurie and le Cheese platter. Since that time about 5 years ago I have not been back but have recently rediscovered it. I love the old leather sofas, the small but excellent wine list and of course the cheese platter to complement your red wine. You get a mix of people going there but all seem to be of above average intelligence as conversations have always turned out to be very interesting! Last trip was 3 Pinot Noirs, a cheese platter and some good company. Love this place! read more

Can be a little tricky to find -- it's down a street that appears deserted and can look a little creepy at night. Now this is a pub with character. Dark, oak, old school. It's a little off the beaten track, it looks like it's closed, but it's worth the 5 minutes off the high street. I didn't have time to eat, but the menu looked good and reasonably priced. I did grab a snack of flatbread and hummus. Not exactly hard to get wrong, but this was really good. Such a wonderful experience here, food and service. Our very tired family arrived at around 8pm on a Saturday night. Our waiter could tell we needed to be pampered and brought us a round of complementary drinks for the adults (champagne) and kids. The food we ordered was delicious ( steak, roast chicken, risotto) but most of all the kind and sweet attention paid to us would bring us back over and over. This was the first stop on my honeymoon to London and I'm so glad it was! We were seated in the back in what seemed like the kind of big comfy leather chair you would find in your father's private office. I loved the old style and presentation of the menu. (Both elements added such character to our experience) Since it was our first night in town we decided to keep it low key and just have a couple glasses of champagne. I ordered the steak that came with a peppercorn sauce that was on the side in a small kind of pitcher to pour over my steak (I love this kind of stuff and I have to admit I was drooling pouring the sauce over my steak). It came with a lovely grilled tomato and AMAZINGLY FRESH POTATOES. Let me explain what I mean when I say "fresh". When you usually have a side of fried potato wedges they have that nasty fryer taste from the old oil. These babies had the taste of the potato and there was no signs of old oil. While the portion was larger I managed to polish of my plate BUT save room for dessert. The dessert I chose was an amazing extremely moist brownie that came with a little side of creme (to pour over my brownie as I did with my steak and pepper sauce) The creme complimented the rich flavor of the chocolate perfectly (would not have been the same without it, I repeat THIS CHOCOLATE WAS RICH) It was the perfect end, to the perfect first night, on a perfect honeymoon. I will DEFINITELY be stopping here for dinnner on my next trip to London! read more

I have had his pub bookmarked for awhile and thankfully finally checked it out and I had a great time. The ambiance alone is just so unique - cases with vintage bottles of wine, leather chairs, a totally wooden interior, etc. I only went here for drinks on a date and it was the perfect setting - beautiful but relaxed and very cozy. Also, there's a downstairs that opens up for private parties. The service is top notch and the restrooms are really nice. I recently had dinner here during a business trip to London. It is truly a gem. I felt like I was traveling back in time 100 years. The interior is dark, yet inviting. We sat in a room that was way in the back, down the stairs. There are no draft beers, like most other pubs, but they have good bottled selections. The food was excellent. I had the steak and chips with peppercorn sauce. I ate at several places during my trip and this was my favorite. A special place with a great atmosphere. This is a cool space and the staff is nice enough, but they really have a nerve calling themselves a wine bar. The selection is poor, but the biggest problem is that they pour their wines by the glass out of the same measuring cups without even the pretense of a rinse, and then leave them face-down marinating in a soup of all the other wines they've poured that night. I brought this to the attention of my server and was met with a shrug. By all means go here for a beer or something, but if you care at all about what wine you drink, I recommend giving this place a wide berth. read more

But that's the beauty of London .. it's hidden gems. Weathered floorboards sit neatly with the dimlit decor. It's cosy and intimate - perfect to take someone speacial. The Boot & Flooger stands opposite the sacred burial ground of the working girls of London; by location its surround by rich authentic London history. I loved the authentic original etchings of London on the wall (circa: 1650) Supper was scrumptious. Thick juicy Cumberland Sausages and tasty mash. Authentic British Gastropub. Great wine. Great food. Large portions. We went to The Boot and Flogger on a rainy Tuesday night. We arrived at 7:30 PM and the pub was full. The decor is masculine, old and British, if a bit dusty. The patrons where we were seated were a bit loud but in a charming way. (But I could see where some would be offended by their salty language.) They have a fantastic selection of wine and were very helpful making recommendations. The wine mark up was very reasonable. The menu was a modern take on British classics in gastropub tradition. We started with the Truffle Mac & Cheese. It may have been the best Mac and Cheese we have every tasted. For our main dishes I had the Pearl barley risotto with wild mushrooms and truffle oil. It was cooked perfectly and was large enough for three meals. My partner had the Bangers and mash with roasted red onion gravy. Who knew such great flavor could come from such a humble dish? The menu is priced very reasonably.
