Sometimes the best food is in unlikely places and according to Saveur Magazine and The Washington…read morePost, Mac's is a hidden gem truly hidden in middle of nowhere backwoods Virginia. It's in cellphone reception-less Roseland, Virginia off a few country roads. Once you see the only gas station for miles, it would be easy to move on, but just wait...Mac's is in the gas station! Passing a beaten up truck and a few overall wearing locals, walk inside and order the fried chicken sandwich with all the fixins (onions, lettuce, a jumbo slice of a tomato, and mayo) for a whopping $4. If they ask if you want potato wedges, save $2 and skip it. They weren't very good and you literally get 5-6 of them. The chicken sandwich itself was good for being in a gas station. It's definitely better than Chick-fil-A but not as good as the best you've ever had. If you stumble upon Mac's randomly, you'd be blown away by how good a simple gas station in literally the middle of nowhere could make such a good sandwich. However, if you're coming from a city with good food, save the trip. Sorry Saveur and The Washington Post.

To be sure, Mac's is such a place... Mac's is a nondescript country store and gas station on Highway 151 in Roseland that happens to sell outstanding fried chicken - crisp and moist with just the right seasoning. This is what fried chicken is about, not that greasy junk at KFC. Indeed, Mac's chicken is as good, if not better, than Mitchell's in Lynchburg (also in the Crummy But Good genre). Choose the number of pieces, white or dark meat and whether or not you want a side and dinner rolls. Mac's offers other items, but it's hard to make a case when the chicken is this good. The store managers are friendly and there are a handful of rustic tables in the back of the store should you wish to dine-in. Mac's is a great place to stop for lunch while visiting the local orchards. If you're willing to overlook the exterior, great fried chicken will be your reward. Just be sure to top off your tank before heading back to town.

Well, if you're here reading this you likely also made the mistake of not stopping earlier. Can…read moreconfirm Wildcat is the only food market within an hour + radius. We brought some food up from home, but stopped here to get a few things to get us through the weekend. Wildcat is definitely more of a convience store than a grocery market. The options were limited, but there's definitely enough to get you by! (Granted if you're a vegetarian that's a different story). Pricing is definitely expensive, but what really got me was that there's no prices on the items in the store!! Nor can you see the cost per item when they're ringing you up. Had I not read these reviews I def would've had more sticker shock when it came time to check out. The last review outlining what the store had in stock is a bit dated so I'll update yall who are reading this in 2024 - this is a list of what I remember seeing - Fridge items: Meats (chicken, ground beef, steak, etc), milk, creamer, eggs, sliced turkey/ham, sliced cheese, yogurt, soda, juice, & beer (have beer den) Frozen items: frozen pizzas, pizza bites, pot pies, meatballs, broccoli, green beans, other frozen/steam veggies, chicken/veggie pasta options Shelf items: lots of chips/snacks, bread (white and honey wheat), pasta sauce, pasta, soups, ramen, on/jelly/nutella, etc

It is closer to being a convenience store than it is to being a grocery store. What I wished somebody else would've done in other reviews before I came here was to list some of the items to be found here, so that's what I'm doing now-- There is hardly any fresh produce. What was there was: oranges, bananas, blueberries, apples, avocado (presliced and sealed), peppers, tomatoes, baby carrots, lemons/lime. There are eggs, but they are $4 a dozen. There's butter, cheese (no fancy cheese to go with wine, though), milk, yogurt, some meat (pork chops, chicken breasts, NY strip steak, bacon, bologna). There's a variety of ice cream. For pantry items: an assortment of chips and snacks, oatmeal, canned beans and other canned items. I was not impressed with the bread selection (lots of white and some honey wheat). There's bagels, but its $7.50 for a bag. There's stuff for baking- sugar, flour, etc. There's wine and beer, like others have mentioned. I was hoping for some fresh local goods, like pies or breads, but there's none of that to be found here. There are also some basic items you find in convenience stores- toiletries, plastic plates and utensils, toilet paper, paper towels, foil, plastic wrap, ziploc bags.
