I didn't even rate some of those courses as 5 Stars for various reasons whether it be the price, staff, or course conditions. Indian Springs is a wonderful course in southern Illinois that presents unexpected challenges and forces a player to use all 14 clubs in their bag. It isn't a 5 Star Course based on Bent Grass, hosting a PGA event or towering fairway bunkers but rather due to the prices, owners, and use of the terrain implemented into their design. This is a wonderful course that has various leagues, hosts tournaments, and treats its guests like friends. Most importantly (to me) is the fact that the owners are beyond friendly and extremely hospitable. I love visiting Indian Springs because she makes me feel like family and is genuinely excited to see me and always thanks me for my Military Service. I won't be playing here for a few years as I move to England but I like forward to coming back next time I'm in Southern Illinois visiting.

We kindly called the office and said that the sprinklers were on, and they said that they liked to turn them on randomly throughout the day for 4-5 minutes a time. Later, with only two holes left to golf, we were waiting a good 4-5 feet to the left of the tee box in our cart. The course was very full due to a tournament earlier and it being a Friday, so we were waiting for the group in front of us to advance before teeing off. As we were sitting in our cart, a guy comes up to us on a cart, and aggressively says, "Can you not park on the f-ing tee box!?" We said, "Excuse me?" And honestly, I wasn't aware of what he was saying at first. So he then repeated himself. My husband apologized and said that he didn't need to be talking to customers that way. We moved our cart, and then waited to tee off. My husband proceeded to tee off to play the hole, but I was embarrassed and had enough and just wanted to leave. Right before my husband was going to chip his ball onto the green, the same guy was standing behind the green and turned on the sprinklers, I'm assuming out of spite. At this point we picked up our balls and just left. Never again will I go to a place that treats their customers this way or people in general.

Now, it is the worst maintained golf course I have ever played. There is obviously no money being put into the course. There were kids working it, but just to keep up with some basics. I literally lost golf balls in the fairway from uncut grass around yardage stakes. Overgrown trees covering shot lines. The only positive is that I basically had the course to myself. It's now very obvious why. It is in worse than horrible shape. The overgrown bent grass is very fluffy. So all fairway shots sit up so that every shot will come off high on the club face. This course should come with a disclaimer that states the shape of the course, it is not playable. The greens are the worst I've seen. So sad.

The course winds through a residential development where homeowners have to be upset. The golf course in their backyards is so bad it has to negatively impact property values. It was a nice open design with several very challenging holes. Of course its also near the motor speedway and there was a race going on that day as well which made it difficult for traffic as well as the loud roars while playing. While the course shows the Gateway Arch, its located on the Illinois side of the river. I didn't play my best game, but still had fun and didn't lose too many balls.

We've visited at least a dozen courses over the past couple of years, with the top slot regularly changing. Far Oaks is now our go-to, and is a pleasure from the pro shop to the 18th green. The course is challenging, but not overwhelming, carts are in great shape, course itself is super fun, and everyone from the starter to the groundskeepers are friendly and welcoming. It gets busy, but pace of play is solid. Back 9 is a fun ride that lets you get creative with club selection. Some folks might complain about the sand, but who wants to hit out of the traps anyway? Great course, great people, and a great way to spend a few hours. Can't wait for our next visit!

Greens were in very good shape considering how they are in the rest of the area right now. Not too many ball marks or burnt up areas. Fairways were in decent shape, and the rough was pretty straightforward to play out of, played very fair all around. Layout-wise, the front 9 benefit a longer hitter, lots of space to go hard with driver. Groves of trees separate most of the fairways from each other, so be prepared to play some low safety shots if you're a little wild off the tee. The back 9, however, I didn't really care for. There's two hard left doglegs that just seemed a little cutesy, they were easy to play with an iron off the tee, I just thought the design was lame on the first hole with it, and then the second was enough to annoy me into ranting about it. Assume it's due to a lack of space on the back side, which happens, I understand, just wasn't my cup of tea. Other than that, a pleasant little course. May be back if I can snag another cheap tee time. As an added benefit, looked like they had a nice big driving range, and more than enough space to warm up on the practice green. Can't attest to the food and beverage situation in the clubhouse, but assume it's on the same level as any other course around.

If it weren't for the sign, you'd never know it was there, across the street and up the hill from Lincoln Middle and Woodland Elementary Schools, bounded by the "Grandview" subdivision to the east and just woods and a bike path away from the "Esic" subdivision to the south. Some on-site memorabilia reminds you that the Legion has sponsored some mean baseball teams, too.
