Outstanding service and end product...A+. Highly recommend reading the entire review to understand WHY I elected to trust Phil (Got Memories) with my material as it'll be of assistance in your own decision making process. Like anyone who has old media namely VHS, Hi-8 even older 8 mm reels from the 1960's I procrastinated the process of conversion to CD or USB device. When finally pushed by family members to do something with them I checked with a local box store chain and was somewhat surprised as to cost and turnaround time...months. There was also no assurances provided of end product quality nor efforts to be taken to address any tape that might have deteriorated over time. Hmm, wasn't at all happy with this response for the obvious reasons and decided that the diy method would produce a better outcome. Given I'm comfortable with computers and scanning devices I started researching both Google and YouTube videos so to determine what equipment was required and eventually landed on some of Phil's YouTube segments. Perfect, here's a guy who appears to knows what he's talking about and has given viewers an instructional video as to do's and don'ts. Time to go down a rabbit hole of sorts as the diy conversion process should prove to be a creative and rewarding process...just need the gear to proceed. Well that's when it became very apparent that the actual equipment needed to produce a fabulous product costs a lot, really a lot and that colour correction, potential tape repairs (splicing) was something out of my wheelhouse of ability nor interest. Okay, I was still on the diy fence but wondered whether Got Memories would respond to an inquiry as this would nudge me one way or the other meaning outsourcing to Got Memories or similar service closer to home. Email subsequently sent, response received from Phil followed by a telephone call and it became apparent he was more than capable of fulfilling as stated and the cost in Canadian was actually less than the box store which was surprising. Bit more due diligence with respect to the online reviews posted by previous customers ensued and I easily became a believer. Once that decision was made all tapes were boxed and entrusted to FedEx. Items went from Vancouver, BC to Phoenix Arizona next day delivery and just like that my problem became Phil's task. All I can say is the guy is good, real good!!! Professional communication throughout along with some hand holding and 2 weeks later they were heading back to me via UPS. All done...as in 3 VHS, 24 Hi8 and 16 8 mm tapes all done and converted to a USB thumb drive, crazy. In viewing the files all I can say is wow and thanks!!! The imagery and sound is crisp and clear so any colour correction etc., that Phil did was money well spent and I'd do it all over again in a New York minute. So if you've read this far congratulations as I can be verbose but felt it important to leave a review that said more that "really happy" or "good guy". I hope this helps anyone else considering a diy option as there's likely no way you'll get the same way results unless you have similar equipment and skill sets. The whole reason for transferring the 8mm films to digital format was to preserve our family history and memories, you can't put a value on such items because they are inherently priceless. After finely getting a transfer procedure and process that work for me at home, I decided that I need to transfer a number of films in the highest possible resolution and quality available. This led me to commercial transfer companies; the qualifier for this quality of course is "what I can afford." Economics play a large roll, you must balance what you can afford -vs- the number of films you need to have transferred. For me this turned out to be one 300 foot reel and a 50 foot reel; these I deteremend were the most valuable to me. I spent vast hours researching companies who did transfers first looking to local companies who offered these services. Even Costco offers transfer service but it was no better than what I could do at home, they simply transfer the film by shooting it in to a condenser box then to a digital video camera (CCD), one of the same processes I tried myself. Eventually I had gone though all of the local resources which ether would not tell me how they transferred, transferred the same way I did at home or were priced why outside what I could afford. After about two weeks of canvassing the internet looking for a company I could trust with films that are irreplaceable. I settled on a company called GotMemories (http://www.gotmemories.com/) I could not be more pleased with my decision to go with GotMemories as my choice; I could not be happier with the transfer quality and the care that was given to me and my film by their staff . I would most definitely use them again and can, without hesitation recommend their services to anyone looking for a quality transfer company. Your old films and slides are priceless treasures to your family. You can trust Got Memories to give them the love, care and respect they deserve. Seriously, they made Christmas 2015 one of the best of my entire life. I sent them 47(!) rolls of Super 8mm film from 1969 to about 1974. In return, I received two DVDs and one flash drive containing each film as a digital file so I could edit them on my Mac later. (My folks apparently never owned a Sharpie back in the day because all the titles they'd written on the little white plastic film reels had long faded away, so everything on the DVDs was out of sequence). To really appreciate the Got Memories way, you almost need to have one roll transferred by a pharmacy or Megalomart, which is what I did back when DVDs for TV first became popular. That image was dark, had an annoying flicker and was very disappointing. With Got Memories, the colors are vibrant and alive, and there's no flicker whatsoever. All the richness of Kodak Kodachrome comes through vividly. I could even tell when my little sister had a slight tan (these were the days before SPF meant anything). From 1992 till 2005 I recorded every life changing event in my life on Hi8MM tape. Marriage, birth of our two amazing daughters, birthdays, band practice, school achievements and events, etc. (26) 120 tapes. and 13 years of memories. I had gone to a local chain store and transferred four of the tapes a few years back, but it never matched the quality of the original 8MM source. The video quality was not great, and the audio were not always spot on. After researching different dedicated companies that do these transfers, I came across a YouTube video of Got Memories. I was interested in the fact that they actually improved on the quality of the original source. I called and talked on the phone for at least an hour to Phil. He was so helpful and knowledgeable. I will always look to Got Memories for any future transfer needs. I reached out to Phil at Got Memories after making a mistake and ordering from Legacy Box. I had several reel to reel videos with sound and Legacy Box in fine print states that they do not transfer sound from reel to reel tapes. Phil took the time to explain in detail the process of transferring my reel to reel with sound to USB drive and a download file. Legacy Box wanted to charge me an unheard of restocking fee for the cardboard box that they sent to me. No other service was provided. After reading negative reviews on not getting tapes back from Legacy Box for some time and the fact they couldn't transfer reel to reel, I decided to re route my tapes to Phil at Got Memories. Not only did he ease my worries of tapes getting lost with constant updates on tracking and receipt of items...but he also did my tapes in such a timely manner that I was able to have a quick turnaround and give to my parents for Christmas. I WISH I HAD GONE TO PHIL FIRST!!! I'm so GRATEFUL to have found GotMemories. I had just about given up, re-boxed the old family 8mm tapes and stuck them back in the closet. First, I bought a Wolverine 8mm to digital player to convert my own tapes. After many hours and days of broken tapes and failed attempts I tried sending my 8mm tapes off to a Walmart and Costco only to get them back saying nothing could be done, the tapes could not be played. My sister found GotMemories searching the internet and had sent her VHS tapes to be digitized, and was delighted with the results. She suggested I take the tapes to Phil at GotMemories since they were in Phoenix. I took my tapes to Phil hoping he could help. Phil said to leave the tapes and he would see what he could do but the smell of the tapes (vinegar) indicated they were decaying. A week later he called to say he had gotten the tapes to play and had digitized them. He said the tapes were brittle and sticky but he took his time and managed to get them digitized. My family and I often spoke about how we needed to do something with our dozen VSHC taps before we lose or break them. Our VCR doesn't work, so the tapes collected dust. Whenever the tapes came up or we remembered them, there was always this feeling of urgency that we needed to be able to confidently access them. Got Memories is the gold standard for customer service and restoration of memories!! I saw Phil's videos on YouTube and read a few reviews. I had a stack of 16 mini-DVDs that had not been finalized. I had tried several local companies who could not help me salvage the videos without having the original camera. I took a chance and sent Phil an email. He responded immediately. Within a week or two I mailed my mini-DVDs all the way to Arizona from Iowa. Phil let me know when they arrived and got to work immediately. It took only about two weeks, and he called and emailed me with updates on his progress weekly. He went above and beyond what was expected of him. He was compassionate towards our need for a projector rental for my brothers memorial, was helpful, and gave that sense of small run business feel that you just can't find anymore. Here's just a couple examples. He spent an hour on video chat with my mom walking her through how to burn a DVD filled with a slideshow for the memorial, didn't charge us for that, he printed out my eulogy last minute for me so I didn't have to stop by UPS, and he was flexible with pick up and return dates. I've used Got Memories twice in the last year to have old 16mm and 8mm movies converted to digital. The results have been spectacular! Phil Thomas is amazing to work with. He is happy to communicate online or by phone, ALWAYS returns calls if you leave a message and answers any question you ask. The shipping process is easy (they even have a video showing you the best way to pack the reels) and all my movies were promptly returned. Some of my movies were from the late 1930s and Got Memories handled them with great care. They were cleaned and splices were checked before they were converted. Wow, AMAZING JOB!!! I just got my film reels/new DVDs shipment and I'm so impressed by the transfer quality of my old 8mm film to DVD! I've had this done at an other shop once before, and hadn't been really impressed by the results. The colors never really seem very vibrant and the picture seemed to be grainy and dull, somehow. The results that I received from Got Memories are a 100% improvement! I can't get over how amazing the picture looks! I'm extremely pleased, and HIGHLY recommend this company! I started with requesting a quote. I received an immediate response from Phil, then he asked if any of the reels had sound and they did not. I had to get the 7 reels from my uncle over the holidays and when I did get them, I made an appointment to drop them off. He said it would take about a week and then offered for an extra fee, he could have them done in HD. I picked up the reels a week later and Phil showed my how to retrieve them in Dropbox and save them in iCloud on my phone. After I was home, I downloaded the files and watched them all. I was very surprised at how viewable the movies are. Crisp colors, focus is sharper than watching them through a projector. But decided to get them transferred professionally because I wanted to see the results and how they varied with mine. Well, the difference was amazing! I had 3x 50ft super 8mm movies sitting in a box for years collecting dust and deteriorating.
