The environment has a nice blend of friendly, though, balanced with a 'I'll kick your ass' when you need it vibe (in a good way); which is something I look for in any sport or gym I involve myself with. They'll push you to do your best, but, at the same time, they are actually good people. Gianna is a great communicator when it comes to Muay Thai. Her explanations are very clear, and is great at building on the foundation or style you may have worked on in the past (ie: if you're more of a boxer, etc). But, also she is great at teaching you the style that she champions and focuses on herself. Jin teaches BJJ in a well thought out cycle-system, and it feels cohesive whether you're dropping into a gi or no-gi class. He is specifically receptive to partnering you with someone who is at your skill-level, weight class, or... perhaps above your skill level, if you need an extra kick; which is always appreciated. There is a certain respect for the art in the class that got me hooked; and Jin is a big part in instilling that. Will most certainly pick-up right where I left off, every time I'm in New York.

I've been training at this gym for 3 years now out of ~4 years total training BJJ. I've trained and done drop-ins at 5+ gyms now and no mat has felt more like home than MGA on 26th street. Scott and Kanan are both fantastic head instructors with different teaching styles that complement each other. They both foster an inclusive learning environment and a great sense of community and involvement. The gym culture is very relaxed, casual, and collaborative, lacking the traditional imposed rigid hierarchy of many other BJJ gyms and martial arts studios in general. This culture then trickles down from the top. The gym populace is overwhelmingly respectful, safe, and fun to train with, while still being stuffed full with absolutely high level people. The vibe is a "everyone is trying to learn and get better together." The curriculum and training also emphasizes takedowns and standup grappling, especially in the more advanced classes. So if you are interested in BJJ not just as a sport, but as a holistic system for fighting, you will definitely learn that here. This was a big plus of this gym for me. The facilities are also one of the cleanest I've experienced. The space itself is a brightly lit loft that, as far as NYC goes, is a great place to train and focus. The only downside is the "prison" style showers (in the men's room at least) which will take some getting used to but the plus side is that it maximizes shower throughput after class. Overall I strongly endorse MGA as a place to start your Jiujitsu journey or if you are an experienced grappler looking for highlevel training partners and advanced instruction.

I feel like I got much better, primarily because Shaolin and Loro and other visiting blackbelts are there so often (Shaolin teaches every class and when Loro is not training for pro mma he is there all the time as well). First off, the gym is very clean and well kept. There's access to weights/lifting equipment if you want to warm up or even workout separately. The changing rooms are clean and private. I've been training here for 6+ months and should've left a review a while ago. This gym finds a great mix between pushing yourself past your limits to grow while still building friendships and community. Zata is the main No Gi instructor and has built a phenomenal curriculum. Each class is full of drills and technique that work well for all levels and have made me such a better grappler. Zata also teaches at a fast pace, which while sometimes is difficult, is extremely necessary for becoming comfortable with live training. Zata also welcomes everyone like family and in a sport where it can be frustrating, intimidating, and uncomfortable, he's exactly who you want in your corner. He's a great…read moreguy, easy to work with, good with kids etc. As far as credentials, he's an Israeli-certified KM instructor, meaning he actually went to Israel to train and get his certification under the tutelage of a former IDF Captain, member of the Isreali Special Forces, and hand-to-hand combat instructor. He also formerly trained at various gyms where he dabbled in MMA styles such as Combat Sambo and Muy Thai. He's a great instructor and has a knack for being able to break down the movements and make them easy to understand. When you understand the purpose behind the movements, and the various intricacies behind them, you develop a much better understanding of Krav Maga. There's people of all levels that come. Plenty of people who have zero martial arts experience, and plenty of people who have trained for years in various arts before migrating to KM (like myself). Everyone is respectful and awesome. We look out for each other and help each other. There isn't any egos here. We push each other when we need to but are respectful of everyone's limitations or reasons for joining. It's a beautiful facility and a very clean one at that. Required foot baths before stepping on the mats and wiping down the mats after class. It's safe for everyone, regardless of age, body type or gender. Something that, as a smaller woman practioner, is very important to me. Jiu Jitsu is a great work out and great for self defense. I would encourage everyone to try it out.
