After visiting countless gyms in NYC and doing free trials everywhere to find the right spot, it was an absolute no brainer to settle at Studio X with Fabio, Zata, and all the other great instructors. First off, the gym is very clean and well kept. There's access to weights/lifting equipment if you want to warm up or even workout separately. The changing rooms are clean and private. I've been training here for 6+ months and should've left a review a while ago. This gym finds a great mix between pushing yourself past your limits to grow while still building friendships and community. Zata is the main No Gi instructor and has built a phenomenal curriculum. Each class is full of drills and technique that work well for all levels and have made me such a better grappler. Zata also teaches at a fast pace, which while sometimes is difficult, is extremely necessary for becoming comfortable with live training. Zata also welcomes everyone like family and in a sport where it can be frustrating, intimidating, and uncomfortable, he's exactly who you want in your corner. Fabio Clemente is an excellent place to learn and practice BJJ. The gym is great, w/ small classes so you get lots of personal attention. The teachers are all black belts. Most of them have been world champions at some point, so you know you are getting excellent instruction. My favorite part of Fabio Clemente, though, is the sense of community. Everyone was really friendly and welcoming, even though I came in as an absolute beginner. My more experienced classmates usually give me pointers and extra reps. Also, the teachers make a point to learn everyone's name - which goes a long way towards making you feel comfortable. One story that really illustrates the kind of gym that Fabio Clemente is: once, when someone accidentally took my jacket (with my phone and wallet in it), Fabio and Zata spent two hours looking through security camera footage with me. When we finally tracked it down, they drove me to get it, and even gave me a ride home to Brooklyn! I guess you could say they take customer service very, very personally. Before you read my review, you should know that I am a current student at this academy. My review might come off a bit biased, so take it with a grain of salt...OR you can come into the free introductory class and see for yourself. I've always been into BJJ..ever since I was introduced to MMA in 2004. I fell in love with the sport and has been following since. I knew that I enjoyed the grappling aspects since my older brother used to beat me up and we'd end up wrestling. As much as I loved watching MMA, I never signed up for any martial arts training. Perhaps I was just lazy, unmotivated, scared, or just everything combined. After spending a few weeks of researching the best BJJ schools in NYC, I came across Fabio Clemente BJJ. A quick Google search showed that he was trained by the Machado brothers (a very respected lineage in the BJJ world). The location and the schedule was a perfect fit for what I needed so I dropped in for the intro class. First off, Fabio actually teaches the class. If you are new to this, this really shouldn't matter as you're going to learn regardless of who is teaching..but it is definitely a pro. Everybody at the academy was very nice. I knew absolutely nothing and felt very welcomed and actually learned a lot from the other students in the class. They took time to show me the correct positions and point out any mistakes a beginner might make. I also thought it was super cool that his daughter and son both train and teach there. It's a family business and it's not something you see much of nowadays. I had a class with Fabio's son and he was great. Gave me the run down of the bare basics and took time to explain how every drill and movement we made attributes to something. I haven't practised Brazilian Jiu-jitsu since high school, 16 years ago. I always loved the sport but never had been able to drag myself back to it. I was walking past the academy one night and decided to give it a shot, after a chat with Fabio, the Head Instructor, I did a free trial class the next morning and haven't left since then. This place mixes extremely qualified instructors, who not only are champion athletes but also great coaches, always paying attention to your physical and psychological well-being. I was only able to train here for a few classes before life got in the way, but it's a great spot: the instruction, organization, cleanliness, rolling partners, everything. I'd definitely recommend it, and the location is about as central as you could want. However, a recent incident outside the gym really showed me how much of a stand-up guy Fabio is. I was headed into Manhattan on a Saturday morning, and two men at the front of the subway car were already yelling at each other when I got on. A young man was sitting on the "disabled-only" seat at the front of the crowded train with his bike, and an older man (who didn't look too steady on his feet, and clearly needed the seat more than the guy sitting in it) wanted to sit there. The two started threatening each other, so I was keeping an eye on the situation. When I looked over again, I did a double-take. Fabio was right next to them, flanked by his two children (who also teach at the school). His imposing physical presence and a few choice words to the aggressive young man kept the situation from escalating, although I can only imagine how much of a world of hurt that young man would have been in if he had tried anything. I know it's a cliche, but a person's character really is what they do when no one is watching. Fabio is not only a world-class instructor and living legend, but someone who is willing to stand up for what is right. For that reason alone, you should sign up here. read more

Let me start off by saying I was a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu guy that jumped from academy to academy. I been to all of them in NYC/ Queens and also trained in Australia and Greece. Hands down the best place to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in New York is at Fabio Clemente's. The atmosphere and the people are great. Its also a family owned academy where Fabio and his son and daughter also train and teach. The amount of black belts and the level is amazing and you never know who's going to walk through those doors at any given time. I won Gold in the New York open for the first time in my life and I was only there for 6 months at that time. I've been training at Team Fabio Clemente for 2 months now and as a newbie to BJJ, or any form of martial art, I can't say enough about how welcoming & professional Fabio's program is. I had a friend introduce me to BJJ, but the gym he trained at was out of the way for me. For moral support, he joined me for my first training at Fabio's which was near my office, and after that training session my friend said, "This is definitely the place you want to learn". He couldn't have been more right. Fabio, Babs & Mike are all welcoming to beginners, extremely skilled/knowledgeable & they have amazing structure to their trainings. Each beginners session has a hand-full of non-white belts that support the class so you feel like you're getting personalized training. Without fail, I get a great workout while learning the fundamentals every time. If you're a first timer, I'd recommend calling ahead and talking to either Zata or Vedha - Fabio's children. I was able to schedule a 30 minute intro with Zata before my first training & it helped me hit the ground running. All in all, this gym is filled with good people and has a great vibe. *** UPDATED 10/2017 Great for beginners as well as those with experience. A. Tu/Th 7am classes are taught by Lou. Morning classes average 8-12 students, and white belts now make up 60% of class. So if you are new to the sport, you will fit right in. Teaching is excellent and students get plenty of attention. Warm ups are fun and bound to wake you up in a hurry (emphasis on loosening up your hips). Technique instruction is designed so that students can follow and understand. About 15 mins of class is devoted to rolling, and students are paired up by Lou. Last 5 mins of class is devoted to cool down, yoga-based exercises.
