Out of all the dentists I've been to, this one is the WORST. The doctor's attitude is bad. Very rude to patients. You will be shouted at in front of others. I intend to complain about this to HIPAA. Good thing I recorded the whole incident, so I have evidence. This doctor is always hot-headed. I think he has anger issues and needs therapy. Also, the woman in front is the same. Just a nitpick, but the doctor and the receptionist's teeth are ugly. I should have taken that as a red flag that they are not good because they can't fix their own teeth. Gothelf Eric "a dentist" - just made the worst experience and had terrible doctor's ethics with a 5 year old kid that was going to fix her cavities for the first time! The whole experience was an ordeal. I called dr Gothelf's office asking for an appointment for a 5 year old child to do her cavities and explained that we were switching from another dentist whose hours didn't work for us. They asked for insurance information in advance and I gave them. We had to wait for 3 weeks to have an appointment. No one didn't call to remind us and confirm the appointment on the day of it, so I called myself and confirmed that we were coming at 5pm. When we got there we learned they didn't check out our insurance, and we needed to call insurance for additional information to switch with a new doctor Gothelf. It's a routine thing for someone who works in the dentist office, but for us is a total news about the procedure. The doctor Gothelf was "defending" his stuff who didn't let us know about it with an attitude that I for sure don't have my kids X-rays and we would need to postpone the exam. I explained doctor that we can't push it because my 5 year daughter was very anxious about this appointment and that we talked with her a lot and prepared her for it, and also adjusted our schedules. I also came prepared and had X-rays with me, and I called the insurance and somehow managed to "switch" to this new dentist office. I let knew both doctor and stuff about it. In the meantime there was a family of I believe 4 (maybe 5 kids) and they were exchanging in the dentist office. I didn't follow their order but was hoping to finish soon because my daughter was very tired and scared, on the verge to give up, and then 2 hours after fixing her cavities she wouldn't be able to eat! Obviously, we were scheduled at the same time with other family but that's not the family's fault. BUT then an adult person came in. While the mom was gathering her family to leave, dr Gothelf called in an adult person that had been sitting there for only 5-10 mins beforehand. He called an adult to come in before my daughter! It's almost 6pm on a school night and we were waiting almost an hour!! I asked his stuff what was that, and she said they would be quick. I was already furious and wondering if I was going to let this person to work on my child's teeth, but then just wanted to end the whole experience for my kid. 10 mins later when I heard that drilling and drilling is not stopping, I asked to give me an estimate how long we would have to wait and told them that it's disrespectful to a little child. I told the doctor before how my daughter was sacred, and it's first time that she needed to fix her cavities and I don't want her to have a bad experience with a dentist. Gothelf told me not interfere how he managed his job and that my attitude wasn't a good start of a relationship!!! That's how he considered a child friendly behavior to let a 5 year-old to wait for 5 patients while she was scared on the school night at 6pm! He continued to be very rude and we left. read more

This is an update on an old review. I have since moved on to a new dentist. I'm having problems with gum bleeding for a while and Dr. Gothelf usually does the cleaning and had prescribed me a mouthwash. It has not alleviated the problem at all so, I decided to get a second opinion. The new dentist that I go to now has a hygienist on site and once they checked me, they were surprised at the horrible job Dr. Gothelf has been doing all these years. I was in need of better and deeper cleaning and I can't believe he did not do that for me. Please Google Dr. Michael Love in Astoria. He is so much better. They gave me a thorough cleaning and excellent recommendations. I'm doing much better now thanks to Dr. Love. I'm disappointed that our family dentist was not doing such a great job after all. Also, if you do see Dr. Gothelf, please check your insurance bills. They have charged us for some procedures that we have never done and had to confront them about it several times. It was a very unprofessional experience, the waiting room, the front desk and the dentist. I had to switch my dentist because my old dentist no longer accepted my issuance. I waited for about 45 min., and it took the dentist only about 3-5 minutes to clean my teeth. It doesn't mean he's efficient, he simply didn't do his job. Remember this was my first time, he didn't take x-ray, or ask any previous dental history. He was very rough. After he's done, he handed me a mirror and said "...satisfy your high standard". I don't know if he's ironic or he simply didn't know how his work was. I felt like I was in a barber's chair with a mirror in my hand so that I could see my back hair. It takes time to write a review, but I feel such a necessity to do so. I don't wish others to repeat my bad experience. There are a lot to choose from, at least for now. Choose well. read more

Dr. Gothelf has been my dentist for over 20 years! I started seeing him when I was 10 and to this date still have zero cavities. Staff is wonderful - attentive, friendly and easy to talk to about insurance coverage and the services you are receiving. Wait time isn't bad at all either. Perhaps doctor should walk out with a plate of cheese and grapes and give everyone a foot rub. Anyway, I came to Eric initially to get a second opinion; another dentist lied about how many cavities I had trying to rip me off and drill holes in my mouth to make profit. Turns out I hadn't had any cavities at the time, I just needed one of my fillings changed. I appreciated Eric's honesty so much that I stuck with him. When I go there, they are nice and he does what he is supposed to do. He has a dry sense of humor which I think can be misunderstood by some people, more easily people who take themselves too seriously. I am petrified when it comes to anything regarding my teeth, dr gothelf has made me feel very comfortable, his sense of humor makes me forget about the drilling and the blood and all that crap. He is very competent of his work, he knows what he is doing and gets straight to the point. I had a back molar that was pretty bad, he knew a root canal wouldnt help down the line and it wasn't worth spending the money. I asked around, 2 out of 3 dentists I asked wanted to do the root canal but said there maybbe a chance I wont be able to save the tooth, but still wanted me to do the root canal, and it was pricey! I came back to Dr. Gothelf. I prefer his honesty and competency above everything (sense of humor is def a plus!). The office atmosphere is very friendly not your usual uptight type of place and it is clean clean clean! i would recommend it to everyone. read more

I would not recommend this dental office to anyone. Here's what happened: I arrived for my first visit and the dentist was making a loud, personal, angry phone call. I thought that was very unprofessional. Then the assistant's phone kept ringing loudly, and it turned out to be the other assistant. The dentist talked to her - well, shouted at her - about being late. The first assistant also read out all my personal information, including my social security, in a loud voice when she was on the phone with my insurance so that everyone in the waiting room could hear. The dental office didn't bother to check if they were in network for me until after I arrived there, and when they did, it turned out they are not in network. The dentist then came out and gave me a lecture about how my dental plan was terrible and no one in New York would ever take it because it's an HMO. Soooo unprofessional, so rude. Went to Dr. Gothelf for a second opinion after receiving a really high dental work quote. He looked at my Xrays and gave me a treatment plan that was a fraction of the cost. It cost me $850 for a root canal (crown & post was etra) and I was in ZERO pain. I never even had to take as much as an aspirin. Highly recommended! read more

I've been to Dr. Gothelf's office quite a few times over the last 6 years and have always found his staff to be accommodating, professional and friendly. I can't recall having to wait over 15 minutes for my appointments, or for my son's appointments, either. If the previous reviewer had to wait 45 minutes it may be that there was an emergency of some sort. DR. Gothelf's is knowledgable, professional, conservative and kind. I have always been happy with my service and found that his prices were reasonable. I suspect that the previous reviewer's statement that it took only about "3 to 5 minutes'" to clean his teeth is a bit of an exaggeration. He usually hands me a mirror, also, but that's because he wants me to be happy when My treatment is completed. He is an excellent dentist. And his office is clean, clean, clean!!! read more

I was disappointed. Circumstances altered the kind of Insurance I now have. God bless the ACA, I will not be ungrateful. I knew something was going wrong with a root canal tooth. Dr Gothelf informed me that Medicaid does not pay enough for him to touch another Dentist's work. I ended up with an abscess. This is not good/ethical practice, and especially so with my medical history. I therefore believe the review that says the people who paid by cash are treated better. I had a good experience. He only cleaned my teeth but I thought he was very good. He doesn't overly treat his patients which I like, if he sees a problem, he'll treat it, if you teeth look ok, come back in 6 months. I've heard quite a few nightmare stories of dentists creating dental work in order to make $, literally drilling on healthy teeth so I'm always nervous to go to a new dentist. Dr. G and his staff are kind, gentle, attentive, personable, knowledgeable, caring, and compassionate. The office is super clean which is reassuring since I'm somewhat of a "germaophobe." This office goes out of the way to make you feel comfortable and welcome as a patient, if not a friend, and doesn't treat you like a number. The doc actually wants to help you! I went to this dentist for about 11 years; I was a child. He did not regard that I had over 10 cavities even though I had done an x-ray. Now in college, I went to another dentist and found out that have over 10+ cavities. It was pretty visible through the x-rays. I do not recommend Eric because he took advantage of the fact that I was a low-income minor and did not even mention braces for my crooked teeth. His fillings were always done in metal black and it was distinct in my teeth. I'm writing this out of experience and I would hate to see anyone young go to Eric for a trusted experience. read more

Horror dentist! Eric P. Gothelf is a butcher!!! Instead of treating me myself, Gothelf had his assistant Dr. Martinez, a young inexperienced novice who didn't even know basic dentistry performing oral surgery on me! If they didn't know how to extract a molar they should refer me to an oral surgeon. Instead, Gothfel enjoyed his lunch in a different room while Martinez was trying to extract my molar using all her strength and the wrong tool pulling my tooth all the way down until she riped 10 mm of my gum and spilling blood everywhere. Then, she asked Gothelf's help and he did a very poor job finishing Martinez's monstrous work. He was laughing at my misery and all the gore and did not tell me the truth even when I called him later on to expressed him my concerns, but he had his secretary talking to me. He just told her to tell me that the gum was infected and prescribed an antibiotic, but in fact I needed stiches. He never said they riped my gum! I also found bone fragments later. He said it's natural that I have a bone splnter which will heal and stick back to the bone! read more
