In just a few seconds, my day went from being "blah" to being "better than I expected"! Long story short: my new slide-in electric range could not be installed by the appliance delivery folks because my old drop-in stove had been hard-wired and, according to the delivery folks, such hard-wiring is now a building code violation. I spoke with the salesperson at the appliance store who (believe it or not) told me to call a plumber (?) because plumbers also do electrical work. A quick search on the Internet did not uncover any plumbers who also advertised themselves to be electricians. The family of a friend of mine from church is in the electrical business, so I called them. They did not answer their phone and I did not receive any recording to leave a message. An Internet search of electricians in the Greater Hartford area provided a slew of results. Bill, at Advanced Concepts Electrical, only had one review on Yelp (but it was a good one). I took a chance and called Bill's phone number. He actually answered the phone and said he was shopping at The Home Depot for suppies he needed for tomorrow's job. He had planned to go home after getting his supplies, but said that he could stop by TODAY (!) to take a look at my electrical problem. He showed up at my house within the time frame he mentioned during our phone conversation. He said he could fix my problem (and proceeded to start doing so within 10 minutes of arriving at my house). My problem wasn't a big one and I just happened to call him at the right time (and I happen to live not far from The Home Depot where he was shopping). Everything came together for my benefit this afternoon and, today, Bill served as my Guardian Angel. I can now cook again! When was the last time you admired a trades person? Call Bill with your electrical issues; he'll earn your admiration in no time flat!

They get a star for being responsive and answering the phone, which some electricians simply don't do. Beyond that, they sent over what I guess was an apprentice and another guy who didn't say much. I called twice, including the day of asking if I needed to go out and buy a plug. They said no both times. They guys came over with no equipment despite me emailing a direct picture of what was needed, and unwilling to drive 3 minutes to lowes to get it. We got charged and they left. After an email complaint they offered to send them back to change a plug without another $250 fee. Since we planned on having them actually do the job, while they were out here we asked for another small job or two (including simply changing an outside floodlight). Here comes more diagnostic fees for their "expertise"... Overall there are more experienced places out there by far, and many that will charge far far less. If you are in a pinch and need to reach someone, "no job is too small" here....

The…read morecontractors arrived on time and were set to cut holes for six new recessed lights in the living room ceiling. Their sheetrock bit wore out halfway through the first hole. They checked the material in the attic and went to buy a new tool for hard plaster (It should be noted that the outer layer of the wall is in fact sheetrock. The trouble started after the first half inch). That tool lasted through the next two holes and disintegrated halfway through the third. They had already spent several hours more than planned so they had to wrap up for the day and reschedule. They returned within two days with a new masonry cutting tool (our working conclusion is that my ceiling is backed by concrete). That tool worked but took several more hours. I expected a revision to the quote and actually thought that some level of increase was probably fair given all the additional cost and effort. Instead I was told that they expected only the originally estimated payment. The finished work product itself was professional and competent, but the fact that there was no attempt to adjust price after spending three times the expected hours and what I assume is a bit of money on ruined tools was the most impressive.
