It has double the variety tho I will come here again if I am able to.

Their packaged foreign snack cakes have led to fun experimenting trying new items. But watch out for the store-packaged Uzbek organic dried apricots. Unlike typical dried apricots, they're much thicker and darker in color and, while very delicious, some have seeds (or portions of pits) that you can't see. Those native to the area from which these come may well know that and know how to eat safely, but to the uninitiated like me a bite into one that chipped a tooth came as a very unpleasant surprise and landed me at the dentist. Sadly, seems the manager failed to accept my attempt at a good-natured suggestion some weeks ago--after a bit of unnecessary wrangling that included being told that apricots don't have pits, that you need to watch what you eat, and that it was my fault (which got me really annoyed and playing the attorney that I am)--to add "caution, contain seeds" to the label.

It's all open there. There's a square where there's performers. It's really family friendly and dog friendly. I don't make it to this farmers market as much as I want to because I need to drive and sometimes parking can be a little bit annoying but usually you can find street parking. I don't come here that often maybe twice a year but I want to go more frequently as this is an all year around farmers market but truly such a special place if you have time on a Saturday morning, please stop by!

There was a fruit stand that primarily had a large variety of apples many that I had never heard of. I took a leap and tried a couple of varieties that were absolutely delicious. I bought some for eating and some for apple pie and cobbler. They also have pears , purple cauliflower, and some other produce. I noticed they have fresh apple cider in 1/2 gallons and quarts. Although this trip was primarily for apples, I couldn't resist the purple cauliflower and some delicious pears. I of course had to walk through and see what other tasty treats and wears they had. If you like Empanadas you must go to the rear of the market and try the large variety of mouth watering empanadas that cater to the meat lover and the vegetarian. Though not on this trip, I've enjoyed the Shrimp Old Bay and Spinach & Cheese. You can also buy them to freeze and have them for later. Another must stop and taste is Cane Mixers. These delicious mixers come in a variety of seasonal exotic flavors like Passion Fruit Jalapeño, and Guava Tiki Punch. Great in your favorite beverage or poured over ice . I didn't buy any this time, but I love mushrooms and they had some of the most beautiful fresh mushrooms I've seen in this area. The price point is also reasonable. They're definitely on my list for next Sunday! I believe new this season is the waffle stand. Can you say I had absolutely no intention of getting any waffles this morning, but when you see the batter being poured on the hot waffle maker and then coming off the griddle stuffed with your favorite toppings..... oooo baby I had to have one. Conkling St. is shut down between Bank and Gough for market day where I can get the freshest produce that I remember from childhood. As a child my father had a large garden (his excuse for getting out of the house every night from spring to fall) and I always had fresh vegetables for every meal. I miss those days of fresh maters and squmbers (our childhood name for cucumbers). This last visit I visited the Jack and Zach Food booth for a cucumber watermelon cold drink for $1. YES! This was just what I needed after a walk though the park and uphill to Highlandtown (They call it HIGHlandtown for a reason and not just because of the crackheads along Eastern Ave). I hadn't visited this booth before but this drink so totally hit the spot I came back for seconds. We get out meats from Ferguson Farms and our produce from Barbour Farms and are always excited to get home and sample the treats. Last week the standout was the grape tomatoes from Barbour Farms. Bursting with mater goodness. The market usually has a music tent for your enjoyment as well. Last week was a drum circle but the week before was a Ukulele group and everyone knows you can't not smile when the ukulele is playing. Try it. Just try to frown when the uke is around. Can't do it. Not only is this market awesome but it is flanked by the brick and mortar shops like Laughing Pint, DiPasquale's and Hoehn's Bakery. Can't beat that.

It's right next to the playground at Christian Temple, so it is very kid-friendly! Walk into the parking lot and there is usually someone playing music (often a man playing the accordion) and two rows of stalls. The farmers are very friendly and offer a good variety of produce. Some are reasonably priced, others are a little more expensive than a store, but sometimes that's the price of supporting quality, local, small business! Most of the foods are produce, but there are a few places that sell meats, cheeses, and eggs. In addition to that, there are some vendors who sell soaps, honey, prepared foods like granola, and occasionally someone is selling wine/beer/mead. My son and I like to get pastries from Garrett, the Parisian pastry chef. Daunted? There's usually an info table with people sharing recipes, gardening tips, etc. At least some of the vendors accept food stamps, but I'm not sure if they all do. Short on cash? There's a stall where you can buy tokens with your card and use the tokens to purchase at the stalls. It's a small, but great farmer's market!

Sadly, the BMI farmers market on Saturday mornings is struggling to survive. It has two things…read moreworking against it. First is the spectacularly great Sunday market under the expressway that has been thriving for many years. It has everything one could want in the way of fresh locally grown produce. Perhaps the thing that works most against the Saturday market is that the residents of the area have no idea what fresh food tastes like. They don't cook, they only eat prepackaged crap and, most likely, are hung over on Saturday mornings. There are, however, a few good venders at the BMI. The two fruit and vegetable venders are very good, the pickle guy is wonderful and Bonaparte's bakery has delicious pastries. I've also tried the meat guy and his products are very good. The only thing that I'm passing on in the future is the coffee stand. $3.75 for a cup of coffee!?! Somehow, this market must attract more patrons. Hopefully without resorting to a Bloody Mary stand for the local binge drinkers.
