Greetings Fellow Yelpers!…read more Since my last review of The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA), I have been personally visited by faculty members of the school on more than one occasion and although I do not appreciate how I was spoken to, I no longer hold so much anger for the events I experienced. Surely things have improved, so it's time for a friendly update! (If my visitors are reading this, no...you didn't scare or intimidate me... I'm just not angry anymore.) My own experience at TMLA was negative and humiliating. But I cannot imagine that the issues that were present years ago could continue to slip by unnoticed. Although my time at The Academy did not benefit me, there are many others who did find it helpful. Eventful and informative open houses are held at least once a year and visiting parents and students have a chance to speak with EVERYONE. My advice is to pay very close attention and to simply ask the right questions. Wishing students, parents and faculty the very best! Good Luck!

My family sent my cousins and I there the three of us grew up making friends here and really learning a lot. The area is safe and close to the public library. Over the years though the school expanded heavily to accommodate the growing community of forest hills. The school it self changed a lot. My younger brother (now 16) had been sent to private school after attending this school for two years. My parents say it's not the same. Growing up in New Hyde Park, I knew the teachers and so many kids/parents who went to Gloria Dei and loved it. When I had my own child, there was never a question where they would go. My daughter started in this school last year in the 2 year old separation program. We had tried daycare with her for a while prior but after months struggling to adjust we finally pulled her out and hired a nanny. The first 2 weeks of school my daughter (and most other 2 year olds) were scared and cried for a while after dropoff. But this school anticipates and is prepared for that adjustment helping the kids and parents through. After 2 weeks it was like a switch went off and my daughter suddenly loved school! She made friends, learned to socialize and play and became comfortable separating. I noticed a marked difference in her communication, motor skills and confidence very quickly in the year and she progresses from there. Most importantly, she loved and looked forward to her time there. My daughter is currently enrolled in the 3 year old program with mrs.cherson and continuing to love school and thrive. Mrs. Cherson, the founder and director of the school, is a talented, compassionate and patient teacher. I'm always excited to come home from work and hear how school was. My son will be starting the 2 year old program next year while my daughter continues with them into mrs. Hansen's pre-k. Although there is universal pre-k in the town that would save me money the experience we've gotten here is worth it. I love the teachers, the small community and the friendly faces and parents you meet dropping off / picking up kids. Can't reccomend this school enough!

It's almost like a private club where the stresses and drama at school seem to be non-existent and everyone has a common goal. That's refreshing to see in the polarized environment we're unfortunately living in now. Highly recommend both the methods and especially the environment that fosters the right learning culture.

I checked my email several times to make sure I had the right day and time, which I did. I called the office numerous times and pleaded with an answering machine to get a call back. As I was walking back to my car frustrated and upset, a very confused person came out of the building. She claimed to be a teacher. I asked her for the director but she had no idea where the director was. I found this place to be very unprofessional. The director called me later and brushed off the entire incident - never apologizing for standing me up! The director obviously lacks concerned for other people's time. I don't want that type of behavior around my daughter when I'm teaching her to respect others and to apologize when she does something wrong. An apology would have been accepted. I'm an easy going person.

There are a few people I didn't care for but I won't allow them to sully my great memories. Two of the three are definitely gone from the school. The school was always kept neat and clean. One of their school counselors was a stand out kind and caring person. They were lucky to have him. Yes, the policies were somewhat strict but none of it was unreasonable. While they did promote the sports culture at CK, the academic aspect didn't suffer for it. I look back fondly of my experience here. I felt well prepared for college. While I can't speak for any of the current goings-on, based on my lived experience, I do recommend this school.

The staff are certified and undergo the strictest of background checks, there is no pressure for kids to be potty trained by a certain age, and you know that the school is safe and well maintained. The school is pure magic, the teachers base their lessons in play which is backed by research as the most important way for children to learn in the early years. I cannot recommend this school enough. Especially since they are supportive and accommodating of students who also need special services. I speak from first-hand experience that they will work with speech, OT, PT, and special educators to make sure your child gets exactly what they need. There is a reason this school has been around for over 60 years.
